Hi everyone! This video is probably what you all were expecting from a family medicine resident. I just wanted to show you what goes on behind the scenes of working in the Clinic aka Doctor's Office.
Its unfortunate that as a doctor, I only have 15-20 minutes to spend with my patients (as a first year I get 30). But thats not enough time to get to know you, answer your questions, refill medications, and catch you up on health care maintenances (pap smears, colonoscopies, etc) Or spend time talking to you about diet, a healthy life style, or quitting smoking. That's why doctor's are expected to "chart prep" - read everything about the patient before they come in. I would only have about 8-10 patients a day, but reading about everyone's medical history and coming up with a plan the day before can take hours! And then once the visit is over, I have to document everything ... which also takes hours lol

My doctor spends a good thirty minutes for our appointments. I have four kids seven and under and we all see the same family physician. He delivered my last baby and preformed an emergency c-section. We love that he knows our whole family and see all of us for anything we need.

Last week Wednesday was the last day of the 5 weeks I spent shadowing a Family Medicine doctor. It is a beautiful practice. I have so much respect for family Medicine Doctors. It is very true that documentations take up more time than you'll ever know. It's so much. The connection I made as a student with the patients was very much worth the experience so I can only imagine how it must be like for the doctor. I liked it!

Hi! I just discovered your channel and subscribed. You are so generous sharing your life with us. So thank you for that. I always wanted to be a doctor but unfortunately that ship has passed LOL! I am a Medical Assistant for a family practice and the doctor that I work along side with is a DO. Our patients are scheduled every 15 minutes. My doctor really takes her time with her patients and even though they usually have a long wait, they all always agree that its worth it. I just so admire you for working so hard and having a family and sharing that with us.

Well here in the u.k i go to see my doctor and I'm not kidding when i say i can wait anything up to 40 mins to see a doctor( never the same one) and all we get is a quick 5 mins 10 at the most. Its not the best but i do understand docs are very busy people. Great vlog jenny 👍

I have an awesome family physician! She reminds me of you a lot actually personality wise. 😊 She will usually spend 30 min to an hour if it's an annual wellness checkup but if I walk in she will still give me 20 min. of her time. She's always very helpful and is genuinely concerned about my health. Love your videos and baby Wyatt is such a cutie!!! ❤

I love my doctor she is awesome! The longest I’ve waited is about 30 mins but it’s usually more like 10 or 15. The appt usually lasts about 15 mins, I think it’s probably relevant to add that I’ve never had any serious medical issues so really all my appointments are just annual well visits.

I think it's important to not rush when with a patient I've been lucky the Drs in all specialties I have seen really engaged in not as rushed now as back several years ago.

In Australia our appointments are 10 minutes with the gp or you can book doubles n that :)

Here in the UK it’s just 10 mins with the dr, usually less. Waiting times for general practitioners is anywhere from 5 to 30 mins wait. Longest I waited in hospital to see a dr was 16 hours and I was 27 weeks pregnant. They let me sleep on an examination table before they admitted me. I love the NHS, everyone should be able to see a dr without having to worry about money, that being said the government is putting too much strain on the drs and it’s the patients that suffer xxxx

Hi! I love watching your videos and I’m not even in the medical field, but I find it so interesting! I’m a type 1 diabetic, so I see my endocrinologist every 3 months and he never spends less than 45 minutes with me! He is, however, in my humble opinion, the most amazing doctor I’ve ever seen. He treats me like a real person and as though I really matter. I only see my PCP maybe once a year and I know specialists are a bit different, but I can honestly say that my endo will spend any amount of time necessary with me even on the phone in between office visits. I’m also a very compliant patient, so I think it probably makes it easier for us to communicate and have common trust. I’ve never had a doctor before that I could actually communicate well with that made me feel comfortable and not judged. I wish there were more out there like that (I know there are many great doctors, but they don’t get recognized!)

3 weeks an ago and about 10 -15 min before that may be a month. I can get an appoint (like a checkup) in about a week or I can get an appointment the same day, max two days if I am sick. but I do live in Canada so...

Fily medicine is amazing and get looks down upon by other specialties which is sad. Because you really get close to your patients. It’s definitely for doctors who want to form bonds and continuity of care I’m seeing family medicine in a whole new light now thank you jenny

Omg in Vancouver, BC, Canada, I always have to book at least 2 weeks in advance or else I won't be able to see my family doctor, I always have to call ahead to see when I should leave my house because he's usually running 2 hours late, and I usually only get 5-10 mins with him because they tell us to limit our "issues" to 2 things... and then it's quick in, quick out. I really want to improve these aspects if I become a GP.

another awesome vid! I have shadowed a few primary care docs and they usually spend between 7- rarely up to 15 minutes with each patient. I have also shadowed some who work outside of the insurance model and they spend anywhere from 30 minutes- 1.5 hours with their patients (though they usually get more complex cases). That's great your residency gives you so much time with your patients, and breaks!! What were your hours this day? How many patients did you see? Thanks for the awesome videos

They give us more time because at intern, we're just slower at doing things. Lol we usually see about 10 patients a day. I get there around 7 and finished around 6

Last time I saw my PCP we spent almost an hour together LOL It was a whole physical and it was a brand new clinic, I think I was his second patient at this location. He was super nice and personable more than previous doctor's I've have since age 18

I’m 24 and I haven’t really had a primary care doctor. Since I was 17 and got pregnant I went to an OB/Gyn and then after I had my daughter I get yearly checkups with the Gynecologist. I don’t have insurance so I don’t see a doctor on a regular basis unless I’m really sick and that was 3 years ago and it was an Urgent Care that I went to.

I'm 21 and I go to my family care dr every year. I think they schedule appointments for every 15 min but my dr always goes a little over because she is very thorough

The time my GP spends with me varies depending on the issue. Sometimes it is 5 minutes and other times 40 minutes. Likewise the waiting time can be 10 minutes to over an hour.

Unfortunately, the tables were turned on me about 4 years ago. I went from working in medicine to a patient. It's a double edged sword being knowledgeable about what is going on medically with you and having to sit back and let someone else take control. Even 4 years later I still have a hard time dealing in this situation because we don't always see eye to eye on what should be done. That being said I spend more time in hospitals and doctor appointments then I did when I was working and a medical student.

Whenever I see my primary care physician I am there for a solid hour. I'd say 45 minutes is waiting and 15 with my doctor. That waiting is the absolute worst part.

Hi Jenny! I noticed the Urban Decay *All Nighter* spray towards the end of your vlog on your table. I wanted to ask how you find it. Does it help with shine and oil control? I noticed you tend to have quite some shine after your workday in the hospital, which is understandable and I get pretty shiny too. So, would you recommend the spray? I've only noticed a difference when I've used it on a full face of make up. On the everyday, not so much.

Jenny Le thanks for replying. I did buy the Urban Decay *B6 Vitamin-infused complexion prep priming spray* and have been using it both as a primer and setting spray. I like it but, it is very drying and would accentuate every dry patch on your face if you don't moisturize prior to applying it and I hate having any product on my face before I use it as I'm still yet to find a moisturizer or primer that doesn't end up making me look like a greasy mess. Lol I tried the All Nighter Spray when it still had the old white packaging and found it to be ok. I also read some reviews online, where the reviewers speculated that the formula was tweaked a bit too along with the new packaging. Now I'm really sitting on the fence about paying all that money... Thanks for your feedback all the same 😊

You guys are the first line of defense. Without you there's nothing else. I don't go to the doctor. I live in Miami and fraud is rampant in private health care. Public health is honest but the wait is eternal. Appointments are set out months in advance.

Jenny Le Nothing really. I realized that I was going into my 30’s and I don’t have anDr I could go to. I go to the GYNO every year for a pap cause I’ve had two previous LEEPS, both in 6months time. I started working out, trying to loose weight and wanted to make sure I was doing ok. He took a bunch of blood, and all is good!

I usually feel rushed with my PCP :( so I've started to just be seen at the urgent care where I work at now. That makes sense now that I know they are only 15min time slots.

Hey Jenny! I recently found your channel and watched all your videos! I'm not a physician but I do work full time in children and women's health care and I am just about finished my Masters degree (which I do at night). I find watching your videos to be so inspiring! Juggling work(in health care)/school/home life is a big struggle and you motivate me to keep trying my best :) we are thinking about starting a family soon and you make the impossible look possible!! I love love love your vlogs! How do you maintain your energy and focus with such a busy schedule and little sleep? Also how much sleep do you get on average? Thanks!! -Laura

When Wyatt was first born I felt like I didn't sleep at all! Now it ranges anywhere from 4-6 hours. On days off I'll try to get 8.

Hi! I love your videos. I'm a family physician resident (or "GP Trainee" as we call it!) In the UK, in Edinburgh, Scotland. Here patient appointments are 10 minutes, with no gaps. So a GP would see 18-24 patients in a typical morning). It's interesting to hear how different it is in the states. Can't wait to see more of your excellent videos! The new doctor ive been seeing since after my baby as my new primary is night and day difference from last one.we spend as much time as we need which is great not to be rushed:) the wait is no more than 30 min in the room nd waiting room. Which is how it should be i feel like if u go to a primary ur wait time should be shorter than urgent care or any other doctor(: . awe he is getting soooo big!(:

It's great you don't feel rushed! That's hard because when you spend too much time with one patient, it takes up another patient's time slot. Usually worse when it's the first patient ... then everyone will be seen later and later.

My PCP takes his time. The wait time is usually about 10-15min. When I had seen a neurologist, I didn’t like how he would rush and discuss about one option instead of my other ones just so we can get it over with. The wait + seeing the neurologist would be a total of 20min which I think is quick compared to other doctors I’ve visited.

It took me about 5 yrs to go to my primary and it took probably less then 10min... how do you do it!? I am on school for nursing and I have a 7 month old and my mom guilt is real because i hardly spend good quality time with her :,( it's hard not to feel so guilty

Wyatt has my complete devoted attention when I'm home. When he sleeps, I study. He's always happy to see me when I'm home. You should not feel guilty for trying to provide a better life for your child. Keep up the good work!

I see you are on different rotations so I guess that isn’t the case. So when do you choose what specialty you would like to do? What are you planning to choose, if you don’t mind me asking?

As a resident, you are assigned/required to work in certain branches but once you graduate you can do whatever you want!

I see my doctor in a C appointment, which gives me more time with them because I Have MS. I saw my primary care doctor till I was 22.

Jenny Le a c appointment just means the doctor gets more time with a particular patient due to certain circumstances (for example I have multiple sclerosis so if I’m sick the doctor will see me for a longer period). It must be just in my area, idk.

It might be because they have 24 years of medical history and background on me, but even if they are sometimes rushed I find the doctors at my family medicine practice so much more helpful than the specialists they refer me to sometimes. The specialists have the same time constraints but none of the background on me.

Primary care doctor make us patients wait and than rush us and move on to the next patient.

There are some doctors that make you feel rushed but not all of us are like that.

I typically wait 45 min in the waiting room, then wait another 10-20 min in the patient room, my PCP sees me for 3-4 min, and he's done T_T I think my shortest visit was 2 min...QQ but the pediatrician I worked for would have 15 min slots for each patient/family, but would go anywhere from 15-40 min depending on how sick the child was or if they needed a full physical for school :)

Ya most offices are like that. The slots are always 15-20 minutes long. But if the patient needs you, you don't just turn them away. So you take longer ... and the other patients get mad cause you fall behind. It's a vicious cycle 😪

Hi Jenny, I was hoping I could get your advice. About 8 weeks ago I got really sick, I had sweats, coughing was so loud and sounded like wheezing, when I coughed it hurt my back, and happened anytime I lied down, took a deep breathe or laughed. I also had green stuff coming out of my cough and nose. I would go on these cough attacks where I would break out in sweats and neither halls or cough medicine was working (I had to leave two restaurants they were so bad). I went to a doctor who said I had a sinus infection and she gave me a Z-pack and some medicine to numb my lungs. However, three-five days after that I think I ended up having pneumonia. I had all the symptoms except my chest rarely ever hurt from coughing. But I felt extremely weak, I didn't want to eat, and I couldn't stop sweating. It got so bad that I couldn't drive myself to the hospital and took nyquil to sleep in off. That lasted for 2-3 days. However now, 8 weeks later I feel much better but I do have a bad cough occasionally and when this happens I can feel it in my chest. and its absolutely painful. I've had to train my lungs to take smaller breaths so I don't burst into a coughing fit and hate taking deep breaths. This leads me to now: I recently noticed theres a swollen lymph node behind my neck that comes and goes. This time its gotten a lot bigger and is hard, I am curious to know what might be happening to me? I have read some forums online that said this occurs when your body is trying to fight an infection. Am I still fighting an infection? When will this go away? And did I have pneumonia??

Currently I have not been able to stop sweating so easily as well. I will bend over and start sweating or lay in a weird position and sweat.

I don't have enough information to answer your question. This is something that you would have to see a doctor in person for so they can also do a through physical exam. Lymph nodes do become swollen when you're sick but I can't tell you for certain that is what it is without seeing and feeling it in person.
