This is so wild how you were in the Chicago region not too long ago! Especially since I live in the region, and I was golfing quite a bit over the summer and early fall. Especially towards the end of the season here. I am really enjoying the long interview of Mike Keiser so far, and I know he mentions Cog Hill which is a top notch public institution in the region. Sadly he is right how so many of the best courses have no option to play on them. In Chicago you have many of the top 100 clubs in the US such Chicago Golf Club, a founding member of the USGA. Olympia Fields and Medinah with no option to lets say a non super rich person a chance to play. Granted, if you know someone who is a member, fine, but those clubs aren't massive where you are going to run into someone associated with them on a daily basis. It is sad since I would love to see those courses, even a brief tour. Thankfully the PGA Tour/PGA Championship is the only time you get access to these courses, but it would be fun to play on it once as well. Let alone see the clubhouses. That said, I think in the last 20 years we are seeing a slight change in the tide. Nearby we have Whistling Straits and Erin Hills in Southern, WI. Michigan has some top notch golf courses in the country that are public. And I even thank the PGA Tour a bit with the TPC Network having a good amount of public courses, or having a Mastercard World class card getting you a chance to play a round on a private all the private TPC courses once a year. I just wish we saw that more with the more prestigious, or even lesser known private clubs. I've driven by Medinah, and it's usually empty on the course. There are a few roads, ironically on the way to the nearby public courses next to it, and you see it briefly with almost no one out there during a peak time of the day. I get it if they open up a bit it won't be cheap, but I rather have an opportunity to splurge on a round like Whistling Straits or Bandon Dunes over never being able to even step foot in the parking lot. It's quite sad to be honest since it will help grow the game so much by having limited access to these sacred grounds. To be fair, Augusta and some are in their own world, and I respect that. But it would do so much good to see places like Shinecock or Chicago Golf Club being open over acting like the illuminati of golf is dumb.
