I've been a far too occasional viewer since I found your film on The Witness, and I must say your content is exceptional. It's rare to find content on KZfaq that could truly be called art, and if yours doesn't qualify I don't know what does. It almost feels out of place on the platform, but boy am I glad it's here so I get to see it. The amount of passion that goes into your films is evident, and the sheer quality of your editing is such that if you don't do it professionally, then... well, you'd fool me.

Thank you, Mugi is the best keion. Now there's always Vimeo if you want your videos to have some arty cachet, but with the Monstrous Algorithm of KZfaq seeing all, KZfaq is still generally the best place to set up shop if you want to "lots" of people to see what you made. Funny, what you say about the editing! I'm entirely self-taught and at the level where a single-frame glitch will really freak me out (like an object persisting for one more frame than it should, or an accidental blank frame inserted into a cut). It looks amateurish to me. And there are at least two frame glitches that survived to the final upload of Field of Flowers... I know most people won't notice but still... my editing heart aches every time they I see them.

@@Electrondance I think editing, particularly in the context of one-man projects, is more about creativity than technical execution. Your cuts are well planned out and your films fit together beautifully. It's well deserved to call them films rather than mere reviews, because they really are something more than just words and footage of video games.

You are very kind. I was tweeting today about how I find what "real" editors do fascinating, but they have to do so much more than I do for these KZfaq shorts - they handle mountains of footage that arrive every day, they are playing with different multiple of the same scene and they have to deal with the director and others. It sounds exciting to me and it sounds like I went into the wrong line of work :O

Oh i am so excited to see bonus content! Your creations are so fascinating and I adore seeing your thought process. This film in particular was lovely and i rewatch it a lot when I'm cooking. I notice something new every time and it really makes me think. Thanks for showing us more of your process!!

Thank you Jack :) Bringing a film to completion always seems to end up in this "death march" because there always so many tiny details to be corrected/resolved. And by this point I want to be finished so it's... sort of... self-destructive in the final days. But then, without a hard deadline maybe it would keep going on and on and on and this one had already been going on for too long. A lesson I've learned here is that once I start a film project, I have to see it through quickly otherwise it may get out of date (a very serious issue during the production this time). Originally I did a "behind the scenes" because I was starting to stream and realised I had the equipment to make little cheap updates as I was doing the work. Maybe it would encourage me to get on with the film? Actually, I found it a pain to insert the time to talk to camera and I meant to talk about Unity the week in which I pulled it off instead of monnnnths later. I don't think I'll do one for every film but definitely a possibility for another large work. Losing the hard drive was undoubtedly the most painful moment of the whole process and very expensive (oh my god, the cost). But I have 12TB of backup drives sitting on my desk now, which are refreshed every week. I should never be faced with the same problems again. I want to get started on a new shorter project but I've got some writing duties on Electron Dance site that take priority first!

I'm a little disappointed there isn't more of the Key interview here. Any chance of more of the footage of that day being made available?

There's no more included because I already uploaded it to KZfaq in 2012 :) You just have to go back through the channel history a bit. It's over here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j9qambp8qsnLaHk.html

@@Electrondance Thanks! I actually went back and rewatched all your old videos a few months ago (well, other than the ones for games that I hadn't played yet, because I didn't want to spoil, say, Dark Souls for myself). Not sure how I missed that one. Thanks again for the reminder!

Ah, cool, I was wondering if it had been marked "unlisted" by mistake. I went through unlisting everything I thought did not add value to the channel after the films started becoming popular (e.g. random examples kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jLOFhsmYmcuYdWQ.html or kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oLtxdMKA077cpnU.html).

FWIW I found this maybe even more interesting than the final result ( not saying amusing, cause it made rather think than laugh ) and as for the glitch - that's the thing: for the viewer it's I think part of the presentation (maybe a little bit strange and sudden, but justifiable!) - but for the author... part of his life so even this error turned out good not so much no man's sky itself - hah !

Thanks! As these films are all the work of a single person with the rest of his family sometimes enlisted as volunteers, so many of the ideas are built within the constraints I have. There are so many decisions made which arise from necessity/feasibility which are invisible. Here's another small one: you might notice the sequence for Out There looks a little off somehow. That's because I had Out There on the phone and I wanted to record footage direct from there, but there are no simple options for recording video. Either I buy an app to do it (none of which I liked) or buy another copy of Out There for Steam (£10 for a game I will not play). I chose, instead, to screencast to my TV via Chromecast and film using a camera from there. I don't know if that was the smart decision - possibly spending the pennies on another copy of Out There would have been cleaner, and maybe I could have petitioned mi-Clos for a free copy. But it was the call I made at the time. The wrong call can be ruinous, like following Blender for months instead of Unity. But with every film, my skill set increases as does the equipment at my disposal, so I'm always pushing myself a bit further with each new film. Which often means they take longer, so I'm not sure this is a good thing!

Fans can turn into your worst enemy because we have placed our faith and trust in you who have told us of your vision. When you severely let us down, you have taken our convictions in you and deceived us. Used us. Taken advantage of us. We blindly believed what you said. We blindly followed your words. That is not something to be trifled with. You bear the responsibility for doing what you said you were going to do. After all, there is nothing so powerful as much as being a child and looking into your parent's eyes when they promise that you will be able to get something that you have been longing for. Nothing.

I'd say in the last decade, I've reversed my expectations: I expect little and am pleased with everything that surpasses it. I discount hype massively. It feels more positive. I approached NMS thinking I would find the value that others had passed over because of the expectations of what it was supposed to be. Of course, I was not able to find that value. And I **still** find it hard to find value in NMS, even in its shiny new NEXT clothes. The hype for the modern game is staggering. I remember when the NMS buzz started way back and it seemed like every outlet had fallen for it. Of course NMS was news but it seemed game journalists were cooking up a game that sounded ridiculously rich for an small indie team. I was not surprised, not in the least, that the end result was disappointing. (I'm going to place the multiplayer issue in a separate box, right over here, and seal it for a thousand years.) I mean... I thought we were done with the whole Molyneux-type falling for developer's hopes. But I could see, as NMS was emerging, nothing had changed. Same old same old. From the dev point of view, if the consequences of not meeting high expectations is a sort of "revenge" from an angered fanbase - for being cheated out of the game that was promised - then that just advises all the smaller (commercial) artists to play it safe, never go big, and they check out of the hype machine... and wither in the dark. It will impoverish us all in the long run. Having social media, being able to get "close" to artists, can easily flip the most devoted fan into an obsessive stalker. It is said the ability for fans and artists to interact is a wonderful thing, but it can also extract a heavy price as we have seen countless times over this last decade. However, none of this is to diminish the very real issue of spending cash you might have saved for something special on a game like NMS which is not cheap... only to discover an empty experience. And that I can understand.

@@Electrondance ...A very nicely worded reply. I will only add one thing (okay, maybe two) to this commentary. I only paid attention to what Sean Murray himself said about the game. A vast majority of what he said was pure lies and bull-shittery. Did I know that this game was being hyped to hell and back? Yes. Did I pay that much attention to it? No. I waited for the game to release (for two additional years, mind you) and then waited some more (because for whatever reason, no early release copies were given out ;) ) to read and watch my trusted online reviewers and commenters. And, boy was I glad that I did wait. NMS ruined me for the hype on any game that will ever release in the future. And I tell this story to as many people as I can as a warning of the difference between reality and fantasy. Gabe Newell could tell me personally that Half-Life 3 was coming soon and I would say to him...let's wait for the reviews. And I wouldn't tell a soul on Earth.

Ahhh... sounds like you've had The Moment. I guess we all have one, when you were let down so badly by something you'd invested yourself in only to find abject disappointment on the other side and the schism is so bad you swear off hype. Welcome to the club! The problem with believing in hype is that the anticipation ends up being more enjoyable that the act itself. If you sidestep the hype, even games littered with flaws can feel like works that deserve high praise. Of course, that doesn't stop me from hyping up games I feel have been relatively ignored :O (And I, too, would approach a 'Half-Life 3' with extreme caution.)

@@Electrondance ...The 'Moment'? Yep. Yep. Yep. And what you say about the anticipation of something coming is more than true. The game that I make up in my head is far better than the one in the box. A great conversation between you and I. Thanks.
