The best description of Moon's style was from John Entwistle: "Keith didn't play music to dance to, he played music to fall down stairs to". He represented the wild, unrefined expression rock and roll was supposed to be - nobody played with more personality than Keith Moon (guitarists included).

They used to say The Who's music was for fighting, not dancing. Roger has said as soon as Keith joined the band, the music became more aggressive. There was supposedly an interview where John was asked how he became such a great bass player, and he said "Having to keep up with Keith Moon."

Keith calls room service a couple of times but nobody brings up the Gin. So Keith vanishes and comes back with a bottle of Gin. Graham asked him where he went. Keith mentioned he climed through the window, over to the neighbours room and took the Gin

Pretty impossible to say who is the best drummer, although I certainly respect Alice's opinion. He is spot-on about nobody else has played like him. Moon was a surf music fan and was influenced by the Beach Boys' Dennis Wilson's drumming style (although he obviously changed it quite a bit!). The interesting thing about the Who was that Entwhistle held down the rhythm AND played these incredible bass runs. In my view, if anyone in that band was the "best ever" it would be Entwhistle.

In almost all rock bands the drummer is kind of a supporting player. The film Spinal Tape with its serial drummers even made a joke about it. But Moon was just as much a Who core member as Townsend, Entwistle and Daltry. And his drum patterns mirror the music beyond the typical mere keeping of the beat.

Moon will never win any awards for technicality and was not schooled or refined in any way behind the drums. So, many of the drum guru's out there will deride him as a sloppy, lazy performer. But there was NO ONE in rock before or after that sat behind a kit and generated the kind of explosive, frenetic wall of sound that Moon created. Roger Daltrey said the first time he heard him play, it was like a jet engine taking off. They controlled him somewhat in the studio but like Hendrix, you had to see him live to appreciate his genius.

Well, since all of these opnions on who is the best drummer is purely subjective, here's my pick. Having heard live performances of most all the groups with the "Best-Drummer Ever" over my years. My opinion based on pure musicality, sense of rhythm, complimentary content, and overall best entertained by is Ginger Baker. For me, moon was fun to watch but is far down on my list as far great rock drummers go. And I saw plenty of him at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit.

Neil Peart talked about his influences on his "Anatomy of a Drum Solo" DVD. At one point he divided his favourite drummers in those who recorded solos, and those who put all of their tricks and abilities directly in the songs. First he dropped a few names of solo-recording drummers. Then he started with "There were also drummers like Keith Moon. ... actually, there were no drummers like Keith Moon!" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i9tkaa6Lt9adk6M.html

Keith Moon was so gifted and played by the heart, so to speak. So sad he killed himself with drugs 'n' booze. What a freakin' waste. He never grew old enough to see how much he was loved. Too bad that love couldn't motivate him to live a sober life.

Illegal drugs and booze didn’t kill him, a prescription drug that was supposed to help him quit drinking booze did. If he had continued with the booze and drugs they may have killed him, or he could have lived as long as Keith Richards has, we will never know.
