Behind the scenes with the U.S. Navy Band before its holiday concert

Every year around Christmas, the United States Navy Band performs a holiday concert in the nation’s capital. The band is a large group of highly trained and highly talented servicemen and women. Paula Reid spent a morning with them at the Navy Yard in Washington before their winter show.

Each weekday morning, "CBS This Morning" co-hosts Gayle King, Anthony Mason and Tony Dokoupil deliver two hours of original reporting, breaking news and top-level newsmaker interviews in an engaging and informative format that challenges the norm in network morning news programs. The broadcast has earned a prestigious Peabody Award, a Polk Award, four News & Documentary Emmys, three Daytime Emmys and the 2017 Edward R. Murrow Award for Best Newscast. The broadcast was also honored with an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Award as part of CBS News division-wide coverage of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. The United States Navy Band and The United States Navy Band Sea Chanters are some of the most talented and caring men and women in our country who selflessly give themselves to serve our great country.

The Navy band and the Navy's Sea Chanters are absolutely tops. To borrow a line from someone else, they know what it means to serve. I suspect every one of these fine people could make a great deal more money in the civilian world. These are Navy people at their absolute best! Thank you for airing their story. My father was in the Commodores in the Late 70's, Barry Weinstein, Lead Tenor. Everytime I see stories and videos about this band, I have tears..... I feel like I grew up as a "child of the ensemble"..... Incredible organization.....

Howard, I was with your Dad in Annapolis for a few years before he was transferred to the Commodores. Absolutely one of the very best!

Wonderful! I am an ex-Navy Musician and toured all around the world doing what I love most, music! I wish I could still be out there! Well-done Navy Band! You continue to do us ALL proud! Bravo Zulu! Robert Ferreira, Master Chief Musician, U.S.N. (Ret.) GO NAVY!

I would do anything to see the Navy band perform. I'm a former PH3 myself. Senior Chief Belinkie is the best of the group!

They're near the end of a spring tour right now. I had the pleasure of seeing my first & second live concerts by the Sea Chanters last week in Southwest Ohio. Oh my goodness they are all so talented what an incredible show. Oh, I tried to edit...
