There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous ideology, the founder of Blackwater’s insane quest to build his own Air Force, the bizarre lives of the sons and daughters of dictators and Saddam Hussein’s side career as a trashy romance novelist.
New episodes twice a week on iHeartRadio.

My poor mother had fallen for the D&D will turn your kids into satanic monsters. So when she learned I was going to start playing it with friends when I was a kid she basically forbad it. I had already bought a player's guide so I purposely left it out on our couch where she could read it. I know she read it and left placed neatly on my bed. I know this because that afternoon she told me I could play D&D with my friends because and I quote, "Its just math and imagination. That's not going to turn you evil."

Realizing that my mother was always a religious nutcase when looking back that the reason why she was constantly asking if my dad was molesting me to the point that I was almost loosing touch with reality, was all because of the Satanic Panic. Irony is that now I'm a huge D&D player with several people who are D&D veterans. Many of them have a lot of traumatic memories also because of the Satanic Panic.

1:01:03 Hello. Belgian here. In the case of Marc Dutroux there were no high lvl or low lvl politicians involved. It was a misunderstanding of a statement by the (equivalent of) the DA that the media spun out of control. Marc Dutroux is a monster, and our police organisation and the deficiencies within it allowed him to kill his victims. But it is not a conspiracy come to light. In fact, because of the case the police underwent a serious restructure to eradicate the gaps that Dutroux fell through.

I just started listening to this one and I can't even get past the intro because I'm too excited to tell you that I'm from the Michelle Remembers town that acts like a city and someone would have absolutely noticed if Satan was summoned and defeated in that graveyard. It's part of a provincial park and surrounded by houses that were built at the same time as the graveyard. It's a tourist graveyard. They just would have noticed, you guys. It would have been loud.

I used to right down the street from a cemetery too. Even if it was three blocks away we would notice if that happened. There was a busy road, a public park, a trail, and at least three churches within a five minute walk, too.

@meatmobile right?! Lol, there's a strip mall across from the Michelle remembers one too, although it probably wasn't there when this was purported to have happened (late 50s-early 60s with the next Satan cycle coming up in the 80s when the book was written).

I love this podcast, but for once, I have to intervene to correct something as it is doing exactly what it's fighting against. I'm belgian, and the way the guest is talking about the dutroux affair (at 1:00:30) is, well, the way the far-right conspirationists tell it here in Belgium. I remember well the whole "Dossier Bis" and "Temoin X" part of the affair, and the attacks against politicians, in particular the socialist (and openly gay, probably not a coincidence in making him a target...) Elio DiRupo, throught stories very reminiscent of what the Qanons proponents are telling today, just without the whole "Satanistic" aspect (Belgium is one of the less spiritualistic country in the world, after all), replaced by the always efficient "Elites/Freemasons" frame. Almost 30 years after the facts, the dutroux affair is a story of completely unefficient police services working on an crime that was just too unthinkable to be perceived, not a vast conspiraty of paid kidanpping to provide victims to some elites circles... I understand that this affair (as with everything that happens in Belgium) is not well publicized internationally, and sadly that often means that only the most spectacular and biased point of view are disseminated by authors with ulterior motives, so be very careful about what you read or hear about such events that happens in a foreign country you don't know the language : things can and will be lost in translation, sometimes deliberately...

46:00 Memory is very complicated, and it is possible for people to have a blackout-like lack of memory of the actual traumatic experience. All the emotional and bodily aspects of the trauma are still there, just not the actual conscious memory.
