Japanese art history is a captivating journey that combines centuries of artistic evolution, blending tradition and innovation to inspire and make a lasting impact on the global art scene.
Rooted in ancient traditions and shaped by cross-cultural interactions, Japanese art is a testament to the country's rich cultural heritage. From the classical elegance of Heian period courtly art to the refined aesthetics of Zen ink paintings and the vibrant world of ukiyo-e woodblock prints, each era reveals distinct styles and techniques that have left a significant mark on Japanese art.
Today, the enduring legacy of Japanese art continues to captivate the world, with exhibitions and collections around the globe celebrating its profound influence and timeless beauty.

Thank you so much for this superb and beautifully presented documentary, brilliantly filmed throughout with an equally gifted narrative. I have a number of books in my library covering many of the outstanding Japanese artists included in this presentation, and gifted to me by two very dear Japanese friends a number of years ago. However, I Have been, to my shame, unaware of Katsushika Oi and Uemura Shoen, two astonishingly talented female Japanese artists - their work utterly captivating - their immeasurable skill in the art presented here speaks for itself. A superior production in every way - my thanks once again - domo aringato ( if I have that correct ) :)

I like the brighter colors of the female artists AT END -I LOVE THAT ORANGE SUNSET OF( it’s going to TAKE LONG TIME TO PROPERLY SPELL SAY THEIR NAMES & the brighter colors of the Modern Era Yet the grays/charcoal water colors(?) showing the ESSENCE OF SUBJECT -REALLY HELP ME TO TRY AND FOCUS ON THE SUBJECT MATTER-INSPIRING TO TRY IT!!( obviously I’m no master yet

Sosaku hanga, Japanese Surrealism, Gutai, Mono-ha... there's a lot of great modern Japanese art that has been skipped over in the making of this video for the sake of skipping ahead to Yayoi Kusama. And then skipping to conclusion as if nothing happened since Kusama debuted.

It is a BRIEF history-a complete history cannot be covered in a short video. Of course some would have to be skipped. We do not have years to learn of the complete history of art in Japan. If you feel offended by this video-then make one yourself, covering EVERY artist and put it out. We are waiting…..

I am leading the horse (I called him Beauty, a chestnut Tennesee Walker) that she is riding at 34.47; this was near Mt. Tremper/ Bearsville, Woodstock, New York State, in the Catskills in 1966 when I was teaching horseback riding, theatre, and canoe at All Seasons Camp for young boys. She arrived in a VW Van with her photographer and his Indian wife wearing a sari. My young son was with me. I later realized that this was Kusama who was very actively making polka dots.
