Fidel really wasn't as unhinged as shown here, to be honest. He's more a divisive/controversial figure historically rather than an all-out monster. He was brutal, yes, but no more so than the regme he overthrew, and he generally improved the lives of Cubans during his time in power. He's to this day largely beloved in Cuba. Worth noting that before the revolution, Cuba was basically a playground for Amerca's rich, and foreigners owned the majority of Cuba's land including 90 percent of its mines and 40 percent of its sugar production (and generally had the better farm land for growing sugar). It's worth noting that throughout his reign, Castro's Cuba was under constant threat from the United States, beginning with the Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961 to a reported 638 CIA assassination attempts on Castro - which shouldn't be surprising since, again, some wealthy Americans had been hurt financially by the revolution and the US stood to gain from a friendly Cuban government. Castro wanted nukes in Cuba, yes, contributing to the crisis, but largely because he was conerned the US would launch another invasion (and even then he was hesitant, with some people thinking that Khruschv was basically using Cuba as a tool against the US) so the idea that he'd preemptively launch an attack on the US given his tenuous position is ludicrous, he was much more cautious than that. The episode probably could have shown a much more balanced look at Castro vs JFK as the two leaders, and still had plenty of room for humor and mix-ups leading closer to nucelear war.

Fidel was no brutal as you said. Brutal is the imperialism. He did not only overthrow a regime supported by the US, he faced against the most powerful, brutal and genocidal empire. As Latin Americans, Fidel is a model, a symbol of admiration.
