Now updated to v1.1 with drawable LFO for any CC
My Behringer JT-4000 arrived today, My first play of this great little Roland JP8000 clone with no talking so you can hear the sounds in all their glory. Towards the end I tweak the midi CC of the hardware with a custom Reaktor Ensemble. Based on Sunborn's JP8000 ensemble. Does it sound good? Let me know!
The Reaktor template is now available on the Reaktor user library. Have Fun!

Hopefully the fact that a $49 synth has a better screen than a $400 Roland boutique will shame people into putting better displays on things.

Got mine today and have to say this is one amazing little synth for just over £40! Noise level is excellent, sounded amazing through my Yamaha HS monitors. The user interface is very intuitive and responsive, despite the tiny controls. You really forget this is paraphonic, compared to my Behringer Poly D this plays polyphonically much better. The twin oscillators give you thick sounds, also having PWM and Super Saw really beefs up the possibilities. There's a USB-C socket for powering the synth, plus it supports midi over USB. Nice thing is that if you use a controller keyboard from your computer connected to the JT-4000 you get velocity sensitivity, pitch bend, modulation wheel and full midi control over the filter, resonance, attack, decay and much more. Easy to dump and reload patches over Sysex or via the Behringer app. The only thing that took me a while to fathom out was how to get the arpeggiator working - eventually realised you have to go to settings and switch it from the keyboard to the arp. It doesn't have any digital effects on board so adding some external delay and reverb does enhance the sound a lot. The 12-bit DAC gives it a nice retro feel and the analog filter, whilst only 12dB per octave is a lovely touch. Great sounds and so much fun to play with!

Question, what's up with the LFOs. From Midi CC you can't choose the destinations (what I read from the manual). and I am puzzled about LFO2 (no destination possible). So how does it work? From the JT itself and from your nice template?
@jpphillippe2
@jpphillippe2 9 ай бұрын
Destination isn't assignable unfortunately. lfo 1 is hardwired to cuttoff and lfo 2 to pitch for vibrato. its limited, but I keep saying to myself its less than 50 quid. so cant complain. pretty sure it can be changed in a firmware update but remains to be seen. i could probably add a 3rd lfo from reakktor that is assignable to any off the ccs. might do that.

Hey mate, love this idea downloaded it straight away but I'm struggling to set it up in Ableton. I've got my JT 4000 set up with a midi channel, receiving a midi from the synth and that's being rooted to an audio channel. It is playing fine. I'm struggling to figure out where the reaktor unit is placed. Is it on the midi channel or is it on the audio channel? Also, is it a reaktor or reaktor Fx unit I should be using? I've tried all different configurations, and as soon as I add the reaktor unit, the audio stopped playing? Any help would be massively appreciated.
@jpphillippe2
@jpphillippe2 5 ай бұрын
It doesn't use or make audio at all it's only midi. It doesn't create any sounds it just controls the JT hardware. So don't add it as an effect on the jt4000 audio channel. Assuming you have created midi and audio channels for the jt-4000, Create a new channel/track with reaktor (as an instrument). Then route the midi output of the reaktor midi channel to the jt-4000 midi channel input. You should be golden.

I can add a new midi channel and route the midi to the JT4000 midi channel, but as soon as I had the reaktor device it changes to audio out, and I can't select the JT4000 midi channel. Do you have to root the midi from reaktor within reaktor itself?
@jpphillippe2
@jpphillippe2 5 ай бұрын
@@quinlivanhunt So you should have 3 tracks. Add 1 midi track for jt-4000. 1 Audio Track for Jt-4000. Drag the reaktor plugin to a create a new track. On the jt-4000 midi track You need to set the "midi from" to reaktor and set change the "pre fx/post fx" to "Reaktor" also (the second selection box). "Midi to" should be set to the jt-4000 and channel 1. Arm the jt-4000 track (red button) You don't need to change anything midi settings in reaktor. Select the Reaktor track and open the editor. The controls in reaktor should change the parameters on the jt-4000 hardware. (double check the red arm is still on on the jt-4000 channel). Other things to check is in Preferences/midi/midiports. What did you use to power this and also hook up a midi keyboard, given that there's only one USB port?
@jpphillippe2
@jpphillippe2 10 ай бұрын
PC running cubase via usb, with rd700nx keyboard. you need some sort of midi interface to trigger it via usb. pc/mac or ipad would probably be the easiest option. Although it claims class compliance usb.

Maybe, it is a bit of a shame no midi in at least. I'm guessing cost and size were more important in terms of features. Its the cheapest synth you can buy, there are going to be compromises. Most people are gonna use it with a daw or equivilant though.@@RedmondBarry256

@RedmondBarry256 10 ай бұрын
@@earthysteve Thanks for that. A bit expensive, though. Twice the price of the synth itself. I wish they'd have added MIDI in to the unit. I've got a Digital Life USB to MIDI cable in my loft, so I'll see if I can use that with a USB Hub and get a keyboard attached. I just want to play this thing without having to fire up a PC. If I end up using my PC, I'd likely just use the multitude of soft synths that are on there.

@jpphillippe2
@jpphillippe2 7 ай бұрын
This is a controller for the original hardware. But you could recreate the original in reaktor. There is a full jp8000 emulation on the reaktor user library. To explain here how to make it wouldn't be practical. But you can inspect the layout and inner workings of jp8000 emulation on the user library and see how it was created. That is the beauty of reaktor.

Wondering if this will work with the USB-C charging port in my Circuit Tracks. It’s able to send midi to my MacBook Pro that way so fingers crossed. I also saw a demo where Behringer used their own version of the Keystep and it was directly plugged into the Micro, or at least it appeared to be.

I would guess not. I can`t see anything on the Novation site to suggest it having an inbuilt usb host. it does send midi via use but I should think unless it specifically states it has a usb host built in then it wont work with the JT. It doesn`t for example work with my Novation SL. Someone else may know different though.

So you didnt mention the user interface :D... I would go for a Blofeld if you can have only one - if you cant get good sounds out of a Blofeld you should get better at synthesis when it should have a Groovebox aspect and you want multisamples for cinematic kind of sound a JD XI (again user Interface :D) But the UI here on the little one is also not its strongest point Once you understood the important part of Layering and having more voices you want a few synths or some that are multitimbral @@sauermusicDE

I'd add the minilogue xd and argon 8. Certainly all more capable than the jt4000 but they are no where near £45. Nothing sounds as good for that price. The filter on the JT sounds better than even a lot of vsts of the same price. Best sounding stylaphone ever the jt4000 if you think of it on that level its a splendid little box. Not everyones cup of tea as was the jp8000 i guess.
