Hello everyone, back again today with a video on Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners (PWP) aka Low intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapists (yes, both as much of a mouthful as each other). Sorry about the background noise, it's hard to find a quiet place to record with a large family!
I am currently a trainee PWP working in London.
This video includes a Q&A style section covering what I imagine to be the most common questions + extra questions asked by my Instagram followers, and then the second part is a bonus addition of a day in the life of my current job!
Timestamps to skip ahead:
0:00 Introduction
Q&A BASICS
1:00 What is a PWP?
2:31 What do PWPs do?
3:37 How do I become a PWP?
5:38 What experience do you need (to become a PWP)?
6:04 How do you prepare for a PWP interview?
8:20 What are the pros of PWP work?
10:42 What are the cons of PWP work?
Q&A FROM INSTAGRAM
12:51 "What was your experience as a trainee PWP?"
13:41 "Wondering if PWP work alone, with out research experience, is it enough for the Doctorate?"
14:21 "Are PWP jobs less competitive than AP jobs?"
15:15 "How long were you doing PWP work until you got onto the Doctorate?"
15:43 "Is it hard to find a job as a PWP?"
16:22 "Would you recommend the training to someone who is very familiar with CBT?"
16:54 "Is it necessary to have a different qualification to become a PWP? I have a Master's in Psychology"
17:39 Onwards - Day in my life as a Trainee PWP!
Please comment, share and subscribe if you've enjoyed the video - and let me know if there are any videos you would like to see! Also, join me on instagram if you haven't already / theoxfordpsych - I post there regularly about my insights, reflections and lessons in psychology and mental health.

Thank you for this excellent video! I only recently found out about the Trainee PWP role and I have been applying for a few months ( 2 interviews so far, one of which is tomorrow!) This was a really helpful look at some aspects of the role I was unsure about, like the actual day of a Trainee PWP and what it might entail aswell as the academic focus and demands of the university portion of the course. The main thing that attracted me to the role is the paid training and the fact I can do something that makes a difference. Awesome work anyway, I have subbed and look forward to more insights from you!

Oooh the day in the life of a trainee pwp part just made me realise how different services are! I just qualified. Towards the end of my training i was doing 6 assessments in a day and then typically 6 telephone treatment sessions with 6 online treatments the other days. Didn’t realise services and caseloads differed so much!

I highly recommend most people, if they can afford it, avoid PWP and go to an MSc if Counselling/being a therapist is your end goal. Otherwise you’re just adding lower paid years on to your career that aren’t potentially necessary. If you have no experience in helping people, or want to move into Clinical Psych for example, then this is maybe a good idea.

Thanks for this video I have an interview next week and this was super helpful - congrats on getting into the DClinPsy! I have a question to piggyback off of this as one day my goal is to do the DClinPsy too (but also hoping to make a career out of PWP itself!) and given that you got the place during your training, did you ever have any awkward questions about the 'ethics' of doing the trainee PWP course but then going to do the doctorate? I've read some forums which question the ethics of that as usually you're 'expected' to work as a PWP for at least a year or two to get the 'money's worth' out of the course being funded by the NHS. Would be great to hear your experiences?

Such an informative video and explained so well! I have subscribed and look forward to more videos x I have a MA in Psychology and am interested in pursuing a career as a PWP.. what sort of practical experience is required for the initial PG Cert in Low Intensity Therapy? Or what was your background before the course? (Apologies if this has already been answered)

Hi there, thank you so much for doing what you're doing! I just wanted to ask, when applying to be a PWP, I am looking at accredited courses on the BPS website and some of the PWP courses have different names, not exactly the one you listed. Though I think the exact one you listed is listed by some of the universities. For example, Essex University has a course called "PWP Graduate Certificate Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner" and it doesn't specify "Low intensity Cognitive Behavioural etc.". Probably going to be a dumb question but would you recommend doing the one which specifies low intensity cognitive behavioural etc. Or does it not really matter. Just worried that doing the Essex one, may not allow one to work in the same scope as the one with low intensity CBT one. Also I found one called: "Graduate Certificate in Evidence Based Low Intensity CBT (IAPT PWP)" would you suggest this is the best PWP course to go for. Sorry I know it's a very specific question and completely understand if you don't know. Should I just contact the BPS and ask this?
