I love learning new English words and instantly recognizing them as Spanish cognates... Like today's dictionary.com word of the day: semaphore. Spanish cognate "semáforo" AND I already knew without reading the etymology that it's from Greek.

I think that the main advantage of been bilingual is that you have twice access to online content in this time when everything is globalized. Specially when you speak English and Spanish because you suddenly have covert a hole continent of languages(almost) in your super hero brain. But also makes you weird when you wanna say things that don`t have translation or when you mix grammars and stuff and then people won`t understand you c:

The only disadvantage I get for being bilingual is everyone comes to me when they need some translating, which I really hate doing since translating is really annoying and time consuming, like just because I can speak 2 languages doesn't mean I'm an interpreter who can translate instantly, since I never translate in my head when I'm speaking either language and most bilingual people I know don't do this either.

Not to be an ass, but maybe you should brush up on your English as well? By saying "monolingual's" you're saying "monolingual is". Now if you want to refer to multiple monolingual people, as opposed to just one, you say, or rather, spell "monolinguals" without the apostrophe.

I've met people who speak 5 languages, and they are not the brightest crayon in the box. I for one, speak 3 languages, and as I became trilingual as an adult, I tend to forget how to say a word in one of the languages I speak (even my mother tongue) or sometimes I struggle to find the right word to express what I want to say in the language I'm speaking. Advantages, I can think in three different ways inside my head and I also dream in 3 languages, which is really cool.
@Altrantis
@Altrantis 6 жыл бұрын
I speak 5 languages, though only advanced in 3 (English is my third best). I don't really forget words in languages if I've been using them, only if I haven't been using them. Sometimes, however, I have a word I want to use from one language but it doesn't exist in the language I'm speaking at the time, or the equivalent is obscure and underused so I don't remember it because I haven't used it in years. But most often what happens is one language I know has a word that is nail on the head on what I want to say, and my options in the language I'm currently communicating in are less precise. Edit: I do dream in my best 3 languages, depending on the context of the dream.

I also speak 3 languages and sometimes they do get mixed up and you wish you could use certain vocabulary of the other languages to the one you are using in the moment. One of the many advantages I think I have for being bilingual is that I get to understand and learn from more cultures, being Spanish my native language I get to experience in different ways how people from different parts of Latin-America and Spain live their day-to-day lives, but now that I speak English I get to know how Americans, Brits, Australians and people from other English speaking countries do things or just the way they are. La desventaja es que a veces cuando estoy hablando español, por ejemplo, se me viene a la cabeza la palabra que quiero usar pero en inglés y muchas veces no recuerdo cual es la traducción lo cual es frustrante, lo mismo cuando hablo inglés. But overall I think is great to know more than just one language.

If you're trilingual it doesn't mean you can understand 3 languages, it means you can speak them with relative ease. It's not the same thing. I consider myself trilingual despite being able to speak five languages, but I easily understand (watching movies, reading text, listening to conversation) about 8 despite not having a broad vocabulary in half of them.

Omg when they were talking about executive functioning and the prefrontal cortex I was TOTALLY waiting for them so mention something about Joanna’s ADD. I feel like that’d be so interesting to delve into since she has the advantage of being bilingual while also having neurological differences.

I have no idea how monolinguals could possibly survive .. English is my third language by the way My mother tongue is Arabic ,and I speak Spanish and German

What if those two languages are really different (English and Japanese) or really similar (Portuguese and Spanish)? Is there a difference between languages similarities?
@pierreabbat6157
@pierreabbat6157 6 жыл бұрын
My hunch is: if you grew up with English and Japanese, you would find Hebrew easier to learn than a monolingual, but then Amharic wouldn't be any easier than Hebrew was. If you grew up with Portuguese and Spanish, Hebrew would be pretty hard, but once you knew Hebrew, you'd pick up Amharic pretty quickly. I grew up with English, French, and Spanish. I had a little exposure to Russian as a kid and later took Russian in uni. I visited Czechia and could understand not just obvious words like "východ" but also words that have regular sound changes compared to Russian, like "jih" (юг). Of course, the latter took longer to figure out, and some words are totally different.
@felpshehe

Pierre Abbat I meant with the brain, if totally different languages make more connections than similar languages. Regardless of growing up with both or only one and learning second later. But what you said about order of learning is true. I grew with only Portuguese and learned English and Spanish arround the same time (by consuming a lot of foreign media) and I tried French before and after learning EN/ES. Before, it was the hardest thing, but now it's just really easy somehow.

I’m a bilingual as well, but in the process of becoming a trilingual. I can’t really think of any disadvantage of speaking multiple languages besides people telling you how it’s a waste of time or when someone gives you a dirty look. In the contrary, there are so many benefits of being a bilingual. There’s the example that Vanessa and Joanna just shared, but my favorite one is being able to understand others different from you. I don’t just mean being able to understand and communicating with others verbally, but to acknowledge their culture as well. If you’re able to interact with someone, then you could also learn about them. In the US, xenophobia is a huge problem. We have people running around, hating on others for no real reason. Sometimes I think about it and I’m not sure wether to feel anger, frustration, or pity for those people. They grow up in an environment where they’re taught to hate others. They grow up without questioning their beliefs and sadly it continues to be passed down, becoming a gruesome cycle. I’m not just going to bash on others,because I’m not perfect either. In my culture, machismo was and could be seen as a normal lifestyle. I’m not going to lie about it, but now that I look back I can remember how this was a privilege that I was unaware of. I was given more freedom than my sister for the simply fact that I’m a male. How cruel! Fortunately, today’s modern women are not tolerating this crap anymore and I’m here to support them until the end! Now back to the topic. Meeting people for yourself can give you a better outlook than any news outlet will ever do. Stop others from painting your beautiful mind. Make a judgement for yourself. Give everyone a chance and don’t turn down a whole country for the fault of one person. I used to think Argentineans were shitty people, until I met my AP Spanish teacher. I now love Argentina!

I think that language is a powerful lens to view the world through and when you use a different language it colours that view. Because some words don't have equivalents, or the translation does not convey exactly the same meaning, using a second, third, etc language provides cultural nuance and helps gain perspective on other's viewpoints. English is very good at incorporating words from other languages to the point where we have lots that have close to the same meaning, and might use them interchangeably. In some ways that might allow the choosing of the most apt word, but in many ways I think it makes us a bit careless about the finer details. Large, big, huge, enormous, gigantic, vast and so on, might on the surface seem like they have more or less the same meaning, but if you were to use the words they derive from in their original language, the subtlety of its meaning becomes more apparent. More so than the words themselves, I find the differences in syntax shape how I might think about something differently when I'm considering it in English, French, Welsh, Chinese or Turkish. Wordplay also varies, especially when comparing English to Chinese! Puns take on a whole new meaning in a tonal language based on characters rather than phonetic writing. Some humour is universal, but wordplay isn't so flexible. That is, however, what makes it so interesting to look at.

Speaking several languages is a whole roller coaster, I speak 5 and I can be a hot mess sometimes as I keep switching the words, ALL THE TIME. However I can definitely see the difference as the years pass by and I learn more languages how my capacity of problem solving and task manage have considerably improved (well, also if you go through shit you just gotta do it no? haha) so I'm definitely looking forward to learn more about this topic, thank you so much! you should bring more guests to your channel!

There are plenty of advantages, but for me a disadvantage is when I can only think of the word I want to say in the language I'm not using when talking with a monolingual person, and having to pause to remember the translation. That's why I love code switching with other bilinguals. There are just fewer obstacles that way

I am greatful for being bilingual (knowing English and American Sign Language. (ASL)). In 2015 I was hospitalized with encephalitis which left me unable to communicate, care for myself and even walk. The doctors were amazed at the speed of my recovery. They said that knowing a secondary Language helped my brain cause it had so many neural highways to reroute things like walking, talking, feeding myself even like how to tie a shoe. So I'm happy I know more than just one language.

A disadvantage is forgetting words randomly (the situation that makes people look at me and judge me like I am just trying to brag "I am a bilingual/polyglot/whatever") or even your own language completely... One time I was presenting some seminary at College... I was SO nervous speaking to everyone, then I saw ONE WORD in English... My brain did the switch and I couldn't think in Portuguese (that scared me, because I'm usually "good" switching back and forth from Portuguese to English). I just started sweating, either mixing words or saying them incorrectly in a weird "accent", and just... 어버버버 there for a solid 1~2 minutes... Finally my part was over and I could calm down and "switch back"... Almost had a heart attack tho...
