Jews, like Native americans, are a tribe. United not by religion per se, but by kinship relationship. This is key.

My great grandfather was an orphan and never knew who his parents were. He grew up on a fishing village in complete poverty. He was adopted by a Jewish family who themselves were very poor too. They raised him, they showed him all their religious traditions, he took part in it, he was a normal part of the family but they always told him he's not Jewish. He spoke some Spanish like most Sephardic Jews. But strictly not Jewish. He later met my great grandma who herself was also an orphan but was raised by the local church so she was very religious and baptized him. Jewish family actually encourage it. We as a family don't have anything to do with Judaism, we don't know any Jewish people. My grandpa still knew some weird foodstuffs and traditions from his Jewish grandparents but those died with him because they were way too old school and complicated.

I'm 37, I've wished I was Jewish since I was like 10 but I grew up in a Catholic family, my parents would harass me TO DEATH, and also I don't think Jews would let me join. So I just secretly wish in the Orthodox Jewish neighborhood I happen to live in.

Judaism is an ethnicity similar to how assyrian christians and yazidi are ethnicities vs being a muslim iraqi. You can leave their religions but youll always be that ethnicity. This concept of religion + ethnicity being the same thing is foreign in the west. #indigenouspeoplesproblems
