Sanjay Gandhi National Park is an 87 km2 (34 sq mi) protected area in Mumbai, Maharashtra. It was established in 1969 with its headquarters situated at Borivali.
The 2400-year-old Kanheri caves, sculpted by monks out of the rocky basaltic cliffs, lie within the park. The rich flora and fauna of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park attract more than 2 million visitors every year
The park occupies most of the northern suburbs of Mumbai. To the west lie the suburbs of Goregaon, Malad, Kandivali, Borivali and Dahisar. To the east lie the suburbs of Bhandup and Mulund. To the south lies the Aarey Milk Colony and the university campus of IIT Bombay. The northern reaches of this forest lie in Thane city. The park and the areas surrounding it, except Thane city, are all part of Mumbai. It is the only protected forest located within the limits of a city.
The region is hilly with elevations between 30 and 480 m (98 and 1,575 ft). Vihar Lake and Tulsi Lake in the park meet a part of the city's water requirements. The park is said to be the lungs of the city as it purifies much of the air pollution in the city.

Mumbai needs a lot of green space. Green space not meant by mere fancy garden. But rather meant to combat the terrible heat, protect wild lives and bring more rain. Mumbai should now either halt its crazy speed of constructing bridges and focus on making many more forest that will prove to be benefical or else focus on both with bit of planning. We need to think about our future which is looking scary right now.

Mumbai need to expand in alibag-dapoli-ratnagiri area. This 200km area should be connected with expressway and there should be made urban grid layout road network which will provide 4-5 times of Mumbai area for development

Jab hum ganpatipule ko jaane ke liye ratnagiri aaye the.. 1) Generally india me kya hota hai ki jab hum station ke bahar nikalte to riksha taxi wale aawaj dete hai ki kaha jaana hai. Ratnagiri me aisa koi bhi nhi aaya jaise unko kuchh kamana hi na ho.. 2) station ke bahar ek bhi restaurant nhi hai, na hotel hai, are saadha ek vadapav ki gaadi bhi nhi dikhi.. I mean its such big business chance people lost kamana hi nhi hai, mere city me station ke bahar raat ke 2 baje bhi 8 baje wali feel aayegi, I'm from chalisgaon between.. 3) Aur humne station pe hi local sellers se puchha ki ganpatipule jaane ke liye kya easy padega, no one answer us.. Aur ratnagiri me aadhe log ganaptipule jaane ke liye aate hai to station walo ko platforms pe ganpatipule ka information board lagana chahiye tha na, kuchh bhi nhi tha bhai.. Again mere city se ellora caves(वेरुळ) 60km door hai phir bhi station pe ellora kaise jaana hai uska information board hai.. 4) again in ganpatipule, hum bhaktnivas me ruke the, jahase beach 2.5km door hoga, bhai riksha wale khali riksha baju se leke jaa rahe the lekin seat ke liye puchh nhi rahe the, 20rupye to 20 rupye lekin khali riksha leke jaane se to achha hai na puchh lo ek baar.. Lekin nhi kamana hi nhi hai.. 5) we stay 2 days in ganpati pule kya 4 hotel me khana khaya aur sab me kya thanda staff tha.. Aur pura konkan hi aisa hai, aur tumhare konkan ke railway station, kisi horror movie ke tarah dikhte hai, kuchh bhi maintenance nhi hai..

I am a native resident of owala (ghodbunder road). I have seen and visited Sanjay gandu since childhood, we aagri koli and adivasi people are strongly grateful to this forest to maintain the environment around here. I am seriously against the twin tunnel project under this park to connect it with borivali. And trust my words it's magical to just visit the top of a mountain and see big room size stones stand on them and watch borivali vasai Virar and everything.

I live in Bhandup aur mere Ghar se 5min me hai ye national park ka area start hota (vihar Lake and all).. bahot hi acchi place hai abhi vaha Cycling track bhi bana hai Powai Lake tak.. hope vaha construction na ho it's literally a gem for Mumbai means I haven't seen a better sunset spot than Vihar Lake..

Encroachment in Yeoor (Thane) is something you missed out on. Apart from the builder lobby chipping away at SGNP from Mulund, the slum population in Thane (near Mama Bhanja Hills). Arey colony land used for the Metro Car shed, also was a controversy you missed out.

We should make some changes in our decision of gaining 33% of land area under forest We have to make a consideration with land area distribution on allocating percentage of land to every sector that is agricultural,forest(including grasslands mountains wetlands water bodies and every other natural site) ,urban area with permanent development, industrial area, waste dumping lands ......

Unfortunately, this national park will get wiped out soon and that entire area will become a dense concrete jungle. The upcoming tunnel to connect Thane and Borivali is the beginning of destruction of this unique forest. Many constructions will take place around it soon after the tunnel work is completed.
