The thing is that Fresh Prince of Bel Air had a nice mix of humor and also dealt with serious topics really well. I used to watch the show with my mom when I was younger and loved it

Exactly. Like most of the actual family life was fairly real. Yeah there were running jokes and gags, like Jazz getting thrown out the house repeatedly. But most of the shows were fairly realistic, it just didn’t think EVERY day and moment had to be ‘dark’ to qualify as real.
@thedefinitionisthis
@thedefinitionisthis 2 жыл бұрын
Well... it was first and foremost a situational comedy. So it had to be humorous overall. Yeah, they dealt with serious topics, but it was only a handful of times; maybe once per season. If they're switching genres completely, it's an interesting dynamic to take the approach from a dramatic standpoint. Like yeah it was hilarious that Carlton was constantly being shat on in the original series..... but if something like that were to occur in his daily life for real, he probably wouldn't be as well off, and would probably feel a certain way about it; something they never really addressed in the original series, and treated it as just a joke at his expense.
@TheDawnofVanlife
@TheDawnofVanlife 2 жыл бұрын
@@thedefinitionisthis He and Will were basically brothers. Yeah siblings tease each other and come out the other end just fine. That was actually the arc of the Will and Carlton characters that despite their huge differences at the starting point of the series they come to truly love each other in the end. Sitcoms had to be clean (as did EVERYTHING on network TV then). They did not have to be consistently funny. Many had running gags, but the stories were mostly slice of life not trying to chase the laugh. A lot of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’s stories were just about living day to day in a family and not every day being about some over dramatized situation happening. Like doing something you know you’ll get in trouble for with your parents or having to be nice to someone you don’t like or dealing with your siblings annoying friends. And the twist on it with Fresh Prince was Will sometimes applying his Philly logic in ways that either turned the home upside down or just wasn’t the way they ran their household. Which is VERY realistic to taking in a kid later in life who’s lived under rules completely different from your own. That’s as much real life as just sitting in the drama for the sake of being dark and gritty. I am fine with this new series existing and it’s an entirely different format. But to just bring the previous Fresh Prince of Bel Air series under the lens of ‘comedy’ ignores the as important ‘situation’ part of the situation comedy which was slice of life episodic storytelling.

@@thedefinitionisthis Carltons was one of the most dynamic chracters in the original series, last season Carlton had largely changed from season 1 Carlton not just in regards to his relationship with Will, but his whole outlook on life. While he certainly was often the but of the joke, him being "shat on" often served a well thought out narrative purpose, challanging him in his views and contributing to his character growth. I agree that he wasn't handlet perfectly, he could have been the but of the joke less frequently and compared to Will, who's character growth was caused equally by positive and negative evewnts and interactions, Carltons growth was too focused on the negative events. But he is a lot better and more complex character then people tend to give him credit for, especially by the writing standards of the time.

That A Tribe Called Quest reference is pretty amazing. It’s a call back to the original show when Uncle Phill was stranded with Will on a camping trip, and Phill criticizes Will’s love of Hip Hop, saying it can’t compare to Jazz. Will then says that a lot of Hip Hop groups used Jazz as a basis for their melodies, even going so far as including live drums, horns, and baselines. A Tribe Called Quest was the example Will used that gave Phill a better understanding of his generation, as well as the way they treated Jazz respectfully.

@@jaheimjohnson2267 I actually remember Ashley being more important then Hillary. No offense to the actress, but she was reduced to a ‘Daddy can I have 500 dollars’ joke the majority of the time where as Ashley actually had agency and layers. I am not saying it is a bad call for this curent show, but if the question is ‘was the original Ashley featured more’. Yes she was. I would say she was actually the more interesting of the two daughters in the original series. It took many seasons for them to write Hillary as anything beyond the airhead who comes in asking for money all the time. Ashley popped as a character way before and far more often then Hillary.

Almost all half hour TV programming was Sitcoms back then. A sitcom wasn’t necessarily constant jokes and it didn’t mean you couldn’t be dark or handle serious stories, but the format was just different. It was self contained and leaned toward moral lessons wrapped up in a half hour. Family Matters was a Sitcom, Roseanne was a sitcom, Married with Children was a sitcom. One hour dramas without the laugh track, one liners, and running jokes are just a more common writing style now. And serialized vs episodic story telling has become more common because of streaming so a story being ongoing instead of wrapped in a half hour bow so that we are back to base rules before the next episode doesn’t happen as much. In the past there wasn’t a lot of needing to see episode 4 to see episode 15. Even the fresh prince opening song is just a summary of the premise that allows a viewer to jump into any episode knowing the basic situation without needing to see other episodes.

Tbh it would probably work better if it was more of an Atlanta style comedy, it's really difficult to make something we've always seen as funny turn so dark and people think realism means it's gotta be constant tragic stuff when that's not true. Side note: Modern Geoffrey and Jazz are perfect.

Both Korey and Martin gave it a low full price. Glad to hear this turned out to be good. Fresh Prince is such a beloved show. The last thing most people want is for a bad reboot. Though, even if it is good, there are still going to be people that dislike it no matter what. That is their right to do so, but I feel that some of those individuals were expecting this to be bad and cannot bring themselves to change course.
@TheDawnofVanlife

I think this is a hard sell, not because it’s more ‘serious’. It’s because sitcoms and dramas have WAY different writing styles. Fans of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air know there was plenty serious in the show, even if it could have a good laugh. This new show ‘Bel Air’ being intentionally a drama series and not a sitcom on a serialized network the writing style is INHERENTLY different. Neither is real. Dramas over dramatize the drama, sitcoms undercut the drama and that’s how those writing forms work. It has nothing to do with a more to less serious meter. And so the comparison ball being kicked around is not only being juggled with new faces holding the old names. You are also seeing two entirely different formats that are stylized under completely different standards. And there’s gonna be some willing to give it it’s own space and others not so much.
@thedefinitionisthis
@thedefinitionisthis 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheDawnofVanlife I don't think the original series dealt with "plenty of serious issues" as much as you're saying it did. It really was something that occured maybe once or twice per season, which isn't a lot in the grand scheme of things. The original show was strictly a comedy, don't get it twisted.
@TheDawnofVanlife
@TheDawnofVanlife 2 жыл бұрын
@@thedefinitionisthis No it was a SITCOM not a comedy. SNL is a comedy. A sitcom is mostly slice of life Storytelling and all half-hour family based series were sitcoms back then, no matter how often they had gags or jokes. As far as how often it was ‘serious’, that depends on your measure of what compliments realism. Only focusing on high drama isn’t necessarily any more realistic then lighter tone slice of life style storytelling. I am not talking about ‘very special episodes’ like the gun episodes or being pulled over by the cops. Which were shockingly well handled in a show that could have avoided ever treading toward such topics. What Fresh Prince wasn’t was serialized. A big dramatic event in one episode had very little impact on the next episode. But EVERYTHING was written that way back then because of syndication replay value. So whatever you were doing had to live in a bottle episode. But as far as realism and serious moments it wasn’t just those ‘very special episodes’ that were the realism of the series. Little things, like the parents worrying about Will’s influence on Ashley are very realistic to taking in a child who’s been raised by other people later in their lives. Or Uncle Phil giving Will a good talking to about his expectations. Or Aunt Viv dealing with being older and not being able to keep up with younger women in a dance class (but faking it). Everything that’s ‘realistic’ isn’t necessarily some dark overly dramatized thing. Some things are just the conflicts of day to day living and some days have more ‘serious’ conflicts and hurdles then others.

@@SuperMurray2009 No Sitcom is kinda a huge blanket term for half hour network programming. Like full house was a sitcom. Were there laughs and cute little funny things, yes, but it wasn’t a comedy. Moesha was a sitcom. Was the plot constantly about laughs…no. It was generally slice of life family situations. Some sitcoms were more heavy handed comedy (Martin) and others weren’t. Even Family Matters which attached itself rabidly to Steve Urkle who was a walking joke a lot of the time, spent most of it’s time on basic family situations and conflicts. Are there common running gags in many sitcoms, yes, kimmy gibbler was a walking running gag in full house for example. Jazz getting tossed out of out the house on Fresh Prince was a running gag. But many of these shows have full on episodes where that is maybe a one minute of the full episode that deals with a full range of slice of life stories that aren’t necessarily all haha funny. And even if they are amusing at times are not based on setting up a joke which is what makes a COMEDY different from a SITCOM.

@@SuperMurray2009 Fresh Prince of Bel Air handled a number of serious topics tho. Sometimes people think things are only real if you throw a dark veil over it. 80% of a good situation comedy (sitcom) is the situation and the comedy works because many of the situations were mostly believable family life. And it’s not like they skipped around the things like the racial issues and the privilege of Will’s cousins vs Will’s upbringing.
@SuperMurray2009
@SuperMurray2009 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheDawnofVanlife Yes but they did skip over a crucial element in the show. Which was what happened to Will before his transition to Bel Air. And why a decision like that could effect him long term. The tv show likely never tackled these issue for im guessing two reasons. One is likely it would be too dark of a tone to start off a sitcom with, and/or Two the concept was supposed to be a fish out of water story for Will living in a rich neighborhood while not being accustomed to it.
@TheDawnofVanlife
@TheDawnofVanlife 2 жыл бұрын
@@SuperMurray2009 I think it was mostly the second. Also, TV back then was ENTIRELY different. Sitcoms were the majority on TV unless it was a show like a law and order or CSI. All shows were based on a premise that could be easily carried from episode to episode. Even the catchy opening jingle is meant to set the stage for anyone jumping into any episode and being able to watch the episode without needing every episode that came before. And almost all TV existed in a ‘resolved in a half hour’ bible so that all you mostly needed was that premise to follow along. It was just the writing style of the time. And even within that fairly confined format Fresh Prince of Bel-Air still found a place to approach serious topics several times, including in the areas of racism and privilege. Shooting everything in a darker pallet in a more modern format doesn’t equal more real is all I am saying. Serialized programming now is just more common then episodic. And streaming has just made storytelling different. But that difference doesn’t make it any more or less serious just because the color pallet is less brightly colored. I am happy to give this a chance as it’s own thing, but I feel the fact that Fresh Prince was in a sitcom format with bright colors makes it less ‘real’ is overlooking the actual content which was impressive within such a constrained format.
