Will's father (Marlon Wayans) makes a surprise appearance when he shows up unexpectedly and exposes a long-buried secret after telling the truth about where he's been. His visit only brings hurt and pain for Will (Jabari Banks). (Season 1 Episode 10).
Synopsis: Set in modern-day America, Peacock’s new one-hour drama series Bel-Air imagines the beloved sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air through a new, dramatic take on Will’s complicated journey from the streets of West Philadelphia to the gated mansions of Bel-Air. As these two worlds collide, Will reckons with the power of second chances while navigating the conflicts, emotions, and biases of a world far different from the only one he’s ever known.
Executive produced by Will Smith, and inspired by Morgan Cooper’s viral trailer that reimagined the iconic, culture-defining ‘90s sitcom, Bel-Air takes a fresh and raw approach to this world of swagger, style, and aspiration, while exploring Will’s complex journey through a current lens. I didn't like the scene. I didn't like the messages. It was more true to life, but not inspiring. It didn't - it just lacked some things. The original scene inspired more. I think that's it. The original scene shook people to their core and inspired more.

Both the original & this version of the scene between Will & Lou are awesome. In the original Will didnt kno the real truth bout Lou til he showed his tru colors of walkin out again. The first was better written. The cursing was overdone and made Will look immature. In the original, Will pretended he understood and then broke down because he deep down wanted his father in his life. MUCH better writing and it’s not even close.

Marion made this scene his own. Will’s actor DELIVERED, but Marlon acted they way everyone expected him to. I’m glad that they keep the relationship the same between them, Will’s dad was close to fix things up, Will faced him like he should and dad got hurt and forgot about everything. I knew him from Requiem for a dream prior to his comedy movies and that movie still haunts me till date so yeah Marlon can deliver the heartfelt emotionally distraught scenes..

Lou may have been irresponsible but his explanation on what happened between him and Will's mother does happen in real life relationships nowadays. Money do be ruining relationships tho. Not fair for a woman becoming a nagging drill sergeant demanding her man to make more money because someone else is doing better. Especially when she was cool with it before the envy. That is the only angle that I agree with Lou on.

I really hope that they do things different with the father's storyline. Technically speaking, we are only getting one point of view of the events; the mother's. It would be interesting to see if the father's character was wrongly perceived.

Im a child of divorce. And I have to say, one of the best things I could’ve done was ask my father HIS side of the story when I was 18. My fathers name was dragged through the mud my entire life and something about it never quite sat right or made sense to me. So when I asked him his side of the story, he explained himself, with no malice, no insults or disrespect to my mom, KNOWING ALL the stuff she said about him my entire life. And he allowed me to piece things together on my own. I already loved and respected him, but it went to a whole new level after that. I still loved and respected my mother, but I did have a bit of resentment towards her for telling the side of the story that made always her the victim, because surprise surprise, my worst relationship, was with a woman who did that very same thing and my mom knew IMMEDIATELY that’s who she was. So it was all pretty cyclical.

I like this version, really dramatises the whole scene. But I also like the original slow build up to Will's realisation and subsequent rage that his father was always a chump. Which is punctuated by the aggressively warm embrace he shares with Uncle Phil.

The original scene couldnt be replicated. But im happy that something new and separate was created here. This was something the new fresh prince needed to kind of create its own reflection instead of being in front of the "Old Mirror" so to speak. I like this. and if anyone doesnt, because of the old one, i can understand your POV.

Regardless, you don’t talk to ya dad like that. This is definitely the new generation of fresh Prince. Cause there was no talking like that to a parent and being able to walk away from it with your teeth in your mouth in the late 80’s-90’s.

I personally prefer this version to the original. The original version was more emotional because it painted the simple bad father narrative which makes it very easy to root for Will and against his father. In this version, you get to hear the father's perspective in a way that is relatable even if you don't agree with the father. It also touches on how the conditions of our environment can influence the trajectory of who we become. In this version, Will would also have ended up in prison like his father because he felt the pressure to live up to the expectations of people in his environment. He is not much different than his father in this sense. He is not in prison because of his Uncle. It gets you wondering how things would have turned out if Will's father had an Uncle that could have given him a second chance.
