Bela Lugosi At His Most Unhinged! "The Raven" (1935)

In this bizarre thriller, Bela plays Poe-obsessed Dr. Vollin...
...the only surgeon who can save the life of Jean Thatcher (Irene Ware).
He also operates on an escaped convict named Bateman (Boris Karloff).
But instead of giving him a handsome new face, Bela makes him hideous.
Bela relishes gaining an advantage over others...
...and then torturing them mercilessly.
Bela's performance becomes more and more unhinged as the film progresses.
He pulls out all the stops in this one, and the result is glorious.
I neither own nor claim any rights to this material. Just having some fun with it. Thanks for watching!

Agree! You could make the case for this being the best of all...even better than Dracula (where he didn't act as much as he lurked and leered. Only his Ygor in 'Son of Frankenstein' is comparable, in my view.

First of all, so called Bela Lugosi" wasn't his real name. There was nothing wrong with his actual birth name, Béla Ferenc Dezső Blaskóobviously. He obviously "sold out" his birth name because of the shallowness of the entertainment industry?! Most likely the change was made as the result of a greedy Business Manager, with perceived notions of greater recognition accompanied with monetary gains? In reality, it's also shows blatant disrespect for one's parents & their family heritage, just to possibly obtain (not earn) a greater buck?!

The "sister movie" to this classic would be "The Strange Door" (1951) starring Charles Laughton and Boris Karloff. It also has a dungeon/torture chamber with a room where the walls come together. Laughton rivals Lugosi with his stellar performance in "The Strange Door".

@@JesusEmmanuelChrist Thanks for your reply! "The Strange Door" is my ALL-TIME FAVOURITE" horror movie which technically is of the genre "horror/melodrama/love story". It is rich in substance, dialogue and authentic 17th-century setting which makes it even better than "The Raven". The movie trailer for "The Strange Door" is uploaded here on KZfaq. Boris Karloff received major billing on this movie even though he was only in a supporting role opposite Charles Laughton, but this was because Karloff was so famous for his previous horror movies. I highly recommend "The Strange Door".
