She's actually 9 in this performance. The Band called her 'The Boss' because she knew exactly what she wanted and would politely express her 'wishes', as she did here with the band leader. It was after I saw this performance that I stopped thinking of her as a 'child singer.' It just didn't seem to apply anymore. A good example of where she is now, is Adele's 'Easy on Me' or her more recent 'My Funny Valentine' But this girl can sing anything. She just has to want to. y the way, this is a fantastic video and shows Angelina in full flight. 😎

I honestly can't think of another singer, at 9 years old, that could have matched what Angelina has managed to achieve here. Especially when you consider it was also her own arrangement. It truly is the best tribute to Screaming Jay that I have seen. 🙂

Guys ...secret why it so easy...besides talent, Angelina arranged the music for this and and all of her (original and cover) songs(That's what the band leader was reading in the beginning of the vid). Angelina was 9 when making this. Side note: I'm not a mic guy or a musician, but I think your reviews are great keep them up! Btw nice play date with bud 😀

She’s was actually 9 when she performed this song, she’s been arranging her songs since she was on Norway’s got talent at age 8, at age 12 her original “ what is life “ she not only wrote it but also the music for it. She’s just multi talented plays the piano, flute, violin, and guitar. Speaks English, Norwegian, Farsi, and pretty sure Japanese (her mother and uncle both grew up and went to school in Japan) not only write her own songs but also wrote a book on why she sings barefoot, making her the youngest published author in Norway. She also paints and designs some of her outfits. Angelina is by no means your average girl and the Astar family is not your average family either they’ve been dealing with fame for a long time her grandmother is Mery Zamani aka Mosarz world renowned poet and artist a child prodigy herself.

Angelina don't think, just sing. Great comment by one of the judges on Norway's Got Talent. We just hope Angelina will maintain her natural, instinctual talent through her teen years and beyond. Angelina has concerts in Norway on June 22, July 1, 7 and 10. I am hopeful Republic Records will make professional recordings for each song she sings, even if they don't share them right away. Every moment Angelina is on stage singing is worthy of the very best recording.

I agree Andy, I enjoy the vocal coaches breakdown of Angelina's genius only because of conformation of what I'm hearing. I don't think she thinks that hard about what she's doing. Angelina knows what she wants to do and just does it. I do believe her music intellect is at a very high level though. Her knowledge of singers, songwriters and songs is amazing. But I think when she steps to the mic it just comes out with little effort, the sign of a genius. I enjoy watching vocal coaches be blown away and expertly try to explain technically what they just heard.

She just turned 9 here. No one is coaching her how to perform. She arranges all her own songs. Go back and notice at the beginning that she is making notes on the music sheets, and then the director is looking at them and smiling. She is a child prodigy. Watch her first time in a studio at age 6 and notice how strong her voice is, how she comes in at exactly the right time, how good her English pronunciation is considering it is her third language, etc., etc., etc.!

Thanks for another great reaction with information different from other reactors. During the Norway's Got Talent show she was asked if she was nervous on stage and national TV. She said " no, I was singing" . At 12 during an interview before singing "Shield" she said when she sings she goes into another world that is great" she is very immersed in the song. So it looks and sounds easy and natural even though it is the result if many hours of work.

I think the band, and the piano and tenor sax in particular, sound fantastic on this recording. For me, this was the moment when Angelina rose above the ranks of child prodigies and into my pantheon of vocal deities. To date, this is my favorite performance ever. Thanks for your great insights into the gear that makes such recordings possible. Speaking of Michael Jackson, I think you'd enjoy her cover of Billie Jean. It's more recent and has a great sound.

Angelina was 9 years and 2 months old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956. She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original. Things I found particularly worthy of note in this video are (a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled. (b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. She was the person who recognised Angelina's talent at an early age and exposed her to all the old time jazz singers. (c) The candle with an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on it. (d) The smile on the face of the Bass player. (e) How she rose on to her toes on the last occasion she sang "...because you're mine" (f) The fact she occasionally refers to her written notes on the music stand (g) The instant transformation from "performance" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I comment on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.

Love this. You guys are like me, fascinated by her process of doing this level of execution. Regarding how skilled she is at this age i think its largely because she has a young grandmother (Mery Zamani, celebrated Iranian painter and poet herself a child prodigy) who is also a huge jazz / blues fan who has nurtured Angelina's interest since she was able to sit up in her crib. I'm guessing that explains how natural and comfortable this quality of performance is for her, though she definitely didn't memorize this from another singer because the song has never been done this way before. The original, Screaming J Hawkins, performed it as a semi-operatic spoof of classical singing complete with bone in nose, shamans rattle and shrunken head on a chain. Others did it as a romantic soundtrack, but never like this until Angelina, though i could identify almost half a dozen covers of this.

I know nothing about audio equipment or mics, but I think the shots of Angelina standing in front of the band (with the different mic) we’re edited into the video just to show her with the band surrounding her. If you watch and listen, there is a slight disconnect between her mouth and the timing of the vocals. I’d say she recorded the whole thing on the original mic wearing her headphones, but the director of the video wanted a nice shot of Angelina out in front of that great band.
@branscombeR
@branscombeR 2 жыл бұрын
@johnvasi: You are right, of course, but I'm sure you'd agree these technical 'flaws' don't in any way dilute the importance of this recording of what has turned out to be a watershed achievement of Angelina's pre-teen years. I'm convinced it will one day be archived in some music Hall of Fame! Only a year later, Angelina recorded 'I'm Still Holding Out For You' her first stunning but unreleased pop/blues ballad and 'Feeling Good' for Norway's national tv network with a big(ish) band, both heralding the next stage in her vocal development. I have made many music videos in a long career in tv production and for studio-based productions with one camera, which I think this is, I would generally require a minimum of three full-length takes synced (mimed) to playback of the master track. While variations in the musicians' sync is relatively easy to mask with close-up cutaways, Angelina's lip-sync strays at times, most visible at 11:12, 13:28, 13:44 and 14:03, but cutaways at those points would have ruined the performance, so kudos to the editor's artistic judgement to leave it be! R (Australia)

@@branscombeR I agree wholeheartedly. It’s the most remarkable music video I’ve ever seen. I’ve watched this literally hundreds of times, and from watching reactions of musicians and vocal coaches, I now understand some of the technical aspects of Angelina’s performance. I’ve often said that if KZfaq had a Hall of Fame, this video would be at the top. As much as Angelina has developed in recent years, her early performance completely captivate me. I listen to her sing everyday. Thanks for the added information.

@@johnvasi Agreed. One fan comment which sums it up for me went something like: 'the only competition Angelina will ever have from this point on will be her younger self.' ... wish I'd thought of that! I did email Per Heimly to request a video interview about the making of IPASOY ... but sadly he didn't respond 😡

Angelina was introduced to Jazz at a very early age, by her maternal grandma. With Sreamin' Jay I think that she looked at Portrait of a Man first, as her grandma is an artist, but perhaps it didn't have the same dynamic and passion as this one, so she put effort into developing this rendition. As you can see, it's a very professional arrangement, very competent musicians, even an art director for the video, perhaps produced to showcase her credentials as an arranger, musician and vocalist. Remember, this is an independent production, no record label behind it. This young lady was not one to hang around and wait until she grows up. Basically she is a natural, born to sing, but not just any songs, she paints pictures with sound to illustrate stories in a unique way...

Knowing what makes Angelina tick (musically, of course) is an incredibly fascinating topic and you can actually see the process unfold in her practice session covering “Portrait of a Man” (Although Angelina titled her interpretation “Portrait of a Child”). It is absolutely worth reacting to, although for the BEST experience, make sure you view the “enhanced version with subtitles”. Yeah, real talent, top drawer talent is something you're born with. Angelina comes from the rarest air of that. But don't count yourselves out. Sound engineers have to have a very acute sense of music to master the equipment they deal with. It's apparent the two of you do. I have seen Jess on many Angelina reactions. And, he frequently points out nuances in the sound and production that I never would have noticed on my own. So, you two are not without gifts. Not the rarefied level of an Angelina but still completely capable professionals. ... Enjoyed the reaction.

She just goes at and makes her voice do all sort of cool things without worry and being self-conscious about it. To be that free inside your mind must be great! This performance was certainly well produced with parts craftfully being put together. Angelina often only requires 1 take to do her part. All her life performances on the regular sound like studio recorded quality. She has a number of originals with a studio live performance. In case you missed it, Dave's microphone didn't seem to work and his sound level was a lot below your own. I could still understand him though, so it was not a big deal.

I wonder if way back when they said “Hey that Mozart’s a good composer “ ( someone so young) skills are developed through deliberate practice, she’s done plenty as did the William sisters and tiger woods so like Angelina all were none to shabby at their craft all practiced practiced

Para mi, sin duda allí ya era una superestrella, incluso antes de esta actuación, cantaba ya como pocas personas pueden hacerlo en su edad adulta. ¡ Angelina es extraordinaria! Por cierto, muy buenas tus reacciones

Came back to you guys on this one after some months. Wish I could give you another thumbs up. I already know her off-the-charts skill, but this review made me appreciate yours all the more.

I can’t think of any other artist that covers this in the way Screaming J Hawkins meant it to be. Love your AJ reactions. Would be good to see your reaction to ‘Feeling Good’.

I agree. I’ve noticed the timing with her mouth was off there, also, but I’m glad they used the original sound throughout.

All her thinking came beforehand when she wrote the lyrics and music the way she wanted it to sound. This was her tribute to Screamin Jay Hawkins. Listen to his version now and see what you think.

I think the term you were looking for when discussing the floor mic was perhaps "ribbon mic"?

Whaaaaa? You hadn’t seen this one? This is the one that always gets recommended. But the most impressive ‘young’ video for me is ‘I’m A Fool To Want You’ which she recorded at 11. There’s another one of her singing it on NGT at 7, I’m not talking about that one. It’s the one where the thumbnail is her at the mic in the studio and she has a flower crown on. She’s 11. For fun, if you have someone in your life who has never heard of her, bring them on blindfolded and have them try and guess the age of the singer. I just think it’d be interesting to see what someone who doesn’t know would assume. But with no context cues about anything… and no pretense to try and guess a crazy age. I’ve done this with two friends and their guesses were wild. Wish I’d recorded them lol
