This is just us being silly ;) we had a lot of fun making this! Both of the breeds are awesome and one is no better than the other. But the revenge of the Border is coming!

I am also the proud owner of a male Belgian Malinois and male Border Collie. They are best friends and do everything together. Being the owner of both of these dogs, I can honestly say it would be very tough to pick which dog is actually “best”. They are both so amazing, and capable of doing anything another dog can do with the right amount of training. With my two, if i had to compare: speed - Malinois. Overall obedience - Collie. Intelligence/trainability - tie. Being a scary watchdog - Malinois has the edge. Patience and focus - Collie. Drive and being active - Malinois by far. Loyalty and being protective - tie. I am sure this wouldn’t be the same with every Malinois/Collie though, it would depend on their training.

That's a comment ill remember. I don't rly like comparison videos, breeds are made according to the geography and the kind of service required from the dog, otherwise well be stuck with a few species of wolves.

Was never really interested in the malinois untill 3 years ago when a friend of mine gave me a malinois pup, he can do just about anything you teach him to, this dog is SUPER.. period.

The collie in this clip is over weight and older than the malinois. My working collie wins every part of this contest except the aggression which I don't want in a dog, I can protect myself. Also if they had put in loyalty, the border smashes it. Best breed, none others come close in my opinion.

I happen to agree btw. Mine boy Riley is totally ball obsessed but he's soo good. Little Lula is a little more wild. Lol

I have a Mal as a service dog. He is so smart. Knows the names for all of his toys. Knows to always sit at my feet while I am eating. Always ready to do anything from go outside to play or go out into public. Best part is he's learned that when his vest is on him it's work time, no play.

Mmaster 851 a border collie was bred to herd very little pressure and distraction. A malinois is bred to perform under extreme pressure and distraction and perform 100% of the time. There is a reason they brought a mal when they killed bin laden and not a BC

Maxwell Chapman actually the army refused to disclose the breed of the dog that was with the navy. Might look like a mal, but the army apparently crossbred their own breed And may I add I like both of them and agree with what you about extreme pressure where the the mal shows brut power and intelligence but for more complex issues the collie shows more genius

I would argue that for patience the MAL won!! The Border Collie kept cheating and creeping forward! LOL btw, while that's adorable, he did it a lot and I'm not sure I would reward that. Cause that's not technically a stay. However adorable it is. XD

Try an Aussie Shephard crossed with a Border Collie, they take longer to train because they are so intense and want to do so much but then you get the best of the shephard and the collie. You just have to get past the first 2 years.

There actually is no good or bad really, for all the things you tested them with are for 'police' work, so if that type of dog type what your aiming for then obviously the malinois is going to be better

Owner of a border/cattle dog mix. She wears out Malinois all day long. She runs 15+ miles with very little effort and I’ve never found a malinois that can keep up with her in a straight line sprint

Very interesting, thanks. I´d like to get one of these breeds, but I have "a problem": I work at home, and whenever I´m working I HAVE TO be focused on what I´m doing, which means I can´t have a dog demanding attention every 5 minutes. Which one would be more likely to rest peacefully by side without being overly distracting? Are both terrible? :D Thanks!

depending on how you raise them :) I have 2 BM now and 1 BC. one (Saar, the one from the clip) BM is a constant distraction while the other (Usha) knows she needs to be calm indoors. Saar was adopted when she was 3 so we missed a lot of her socialisation, Usha we had sinds puppyhood and we trained her immediatly that she needs to be calm indoors. The BC is chill indoors, but he wasnt like that till he was 5, before then he was cray cray :p But if you want to work 8 hours non stop and not pay attention to your dog neither of the breeds would be a match

I had a Mal and my grandfather had working Bordercollies on the ranch and they were a bit more agile except for their jump, the Mal has that. My Mal playing with his Bordercollies was like a track star playing football with a running back, both were very fast but the Bordercollie is a running back like Deon Sanders.

Something being cute is totally individual. Border collies dominate in agility and bark at intruders, they are also not far behind in pure speed which is kind of useless in most scenarios. Also bc are bred to charge at bulls without showing any fear. And yes while it may lack in pure strength i don't think a mal can win against a man with a knife or some sort of weapon which most intruders probably will. Anyway i still love both breeds. Hannes Herrey you don't think a Mal would win against an attacker with a knife? This breed is used in Police, SWAT and military as attack dogs. They do have enough power to stop an attacker and a strong enough bite to restrain him, unlike Borders who are mostly used in the same services as drug or explosives searching dogs.

Loved the video. We have two Border Collies and a Malinois/McNab mix. Will soon pick up our purebred Malinois puppy. We love both breeds and both are making awesome cattle dogs. Both, super smart.

This video is inaccurate. A border collie is way faster than a Malinois. This border collie is older and overweight. It's easy just go look up agility and you can see that the Malinois is easily outrun by the border collie. Malinois are fast but Border Collies truly are the speed demons and they have an adaptation in their joints that can allow them to crouch low and make tight turns

A border collie is easier to train than a mal since it is more handler soft and do not have a guard drive.

I’d like to see a serious competition between the larger working bloodlines from both breeds. My working border collies have been crossed with mals for tactical dogs, and they had the larger feet, intelligence and endurance of the bc with the bite, height and coloring of a malinois.

the speed test wasn't good. borders will chase, thats what theyve been bred to do, stay behind and heard! mine never runs at full speed. unless i get a friend to cycle fast downhill, her needing to catch up and then maintain. that's when you'll see how fast they go. that was a jog at best, you can tell by how much bonce was in the strides. the collie isn't low, its legs arnt crossing, its standing tall with tiny movements, either there no effort to go fast, or it has some serious hip issues, which isnt the case here.

Nano is from a working line not a show line :) he's actually faster than the mal when chasing a ball, but when we call them towards us he jog-sprints. Don't take anything too serious from this video, it was just for fun :D

My Malinois would never turn her head from prey. Although I have not taught an unbreakable sit to her yet, so I doubt she would've won this challenge. But not a chance she would ever look away first. She's got the speed, focus , and hunt down better than any dog I've ever met.

Annwyn Dusty Huh ... Who says that? A Dutch shepherd is from the Netherlands a German shepherd from Germany and a Belgian Malinois from Belgium. All three are shepherds but that's the Border Colli too. Is that also a descendant of Dutch, German or Belgian Shepherd? I dont think so! A Dutch Shepherd is a very good dog but thats nothing to do with blood from a German or Mal.

the origin of dutch sheperd is a mixt between the blood of the german shepherd and the malinois . That s his history. It s really the way he made.

I have had mal X GSD, Border Collies, BC X GSD, I.E. several cross bred herding dogs. Every one of the was a great dog. Only pure bred was a Border Collie; never a pure mal nor GSD; but I am thinking seriously about a mal now.

There style of herding is completely different. Border collies herd by being told what to do. The malinois does it independently. I know this as I herd with both breeds

@@DolleHengst 'both breeds can herd by the way'... not really. Border Collie is VASTLY superior to a 'malinator' for herding. I do want to emphasize the phrase 'VASTLY superior', too. Also, a 'malinator' ain't going to do much of anything against a pack of wolves or a thief. What both breeds CAN DO is bark and alert an owner who has a fire arm. If 'malinators' were any good at herding, we would all be using them... simple as that.

If it wasn’t for the music I would say this is a great video…but hey, I was distracted. Apart from the dreadful sound I think they’re both great breeds. Agility of a dog could be subjective. Dogs have genetic traits that follow even just 1/2 generations. That means that if the parents were great runners, great herding dogs, likely they will be too. On the contrary if the dog is coming from a generation of apartment living breed, unlikely will excel in these traits. If anyone have the chance I would recommend watching live the BC herding competitions. Outstanding!

To all those saying that BCs are the world’s smartest dog... they are, but only when bred for working ability aka herding sheep. In general, the Malinois have not been so dumbed down by showlines/sports lines that I would have to say they are the superior breed in general. The majority of Mals are more authentic and true to their breed than the majority of BCs are. But let’s be honest; a top-notch working BC is probably much more clever and keen than a top-notch working Mal. I love both breeds though.

Totally agree Olivia. I have always had working line C's and my latest is out of a World Champion Line so very smart However I have been looking into Malinois and Dutch Shepherds . A strong working line Collie can be very tough like mine was before I trained her. They all need lots of training in my opinion :)

Don't get either of these breeds unless you've owned other dogs before or work long hours. They are high maintenance and need attention, not apartment dogs
