Memorial is an epic funeral march-like piece, composed by Michael Nyman around 1984-1985. This composition is one of the most praised of Nyman's works. Its first commercial recording was on the soundtrack of The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover and has been rerecorded on the Michael Nyman

Wonderful performance of a piece I've heard in a kaleidoscope of different mountings. Brilliant to put the solo voice in a countertenor.For me, Nyman and Glass are the greatest musicians of the 20th-21st centuries.

Great performance and everything, but you should definitely check out the movie. I can't say it's for everybody, I think of it as a dark comedy and the music fits perfectly.

Just so you know, this music wasn't intented for a movie. Yet greenaway used it very well in the Cook his wife and so on, but first it was made as a march funebre following the Heyzel Stadium massacre in 1985. So not really a dark comedy

@@kropotkine9640 I later looked it up, yeah. By dark comedy I obviously meant the film itself, the story behind the music is tragic.

The piece incorporates and builds on a musical sequence from "What Power Art Thou”, an aria from the opera King Arthur by Henry Purcell. (aus Wikipedia)

geil ein Countertenor, mal sehen wie hoch er kommt. Im Film hat das eine Sopranistin gesungen denke ich. Bravo bravissimo!

Excellent performance of an iconic composition, although the ending does drag on and on interminably. No criticism of the counter-tenor, but it appears Nyman didn't know when to stop. The video also irritatingly focuses (from 2:52) on the chorus droning "ah ah ah" for some reason, instead of on the trumpet player, whose only solo plays for a full minute. Very odd.

@@JohnSmith-gl8ln Nope, it was composed by Nyman in 1985 for a six part concert work for a French Music Festival. While composing it Nyman was a tv witness of the Heyzel massacre and subsequently dedicated this march to the memory of the victims. Later Peter Greenaway used this in his 1989 movie

Wenn die Trompete spielt hätte ich auch gerne eine Nahaufnahme des jenigen. Die Regie ist schlecht und hat keine Ahnung von dieser Musik.

I was thinking exactly the same! How bad was the cameras direction! Where was the spot on the trumpet????

@@martincaracoche4657 Do you use Googletranslator or did you understand german? :-) The job is for the trumpets and Trombones verry hard and they not often to see. the camera direktion looks like random. The countertenor is verry good.
