Take a spin in a Bell 206 JetRanger helicopter with me. We go over the main controls of a helicopter and why learning to fly one can be a little tricky.
Thanks to AirOcean for the use of your aircraft in this video.

I dreamed of learning to fly a helicopter until an on-duty firefighting injury left me with a vestibular disorder. Playing video games mess with my head enough to disorient my balance. So watching helicopter flight videos are just about as close as I can get these days. To date, his was one of the best videos I've seen on KZfaq. Rotating around the man standing on the ground was my favorite part. That was a nice landing as well.

I’ve been flying x-plane fixed wing and helos for years and always selected the option to have the engines running at the start. I recently purchased a Bell 407 for my sim and actually used the checklist to start it and shut it down. I am now addicted to flying it and this video has given me so much knowledge now on what the instruments should be reading and why. As a retired full time fighter jet electrician with the Air Guard, I did have the basics of flying and instrumentation and flew a few times in Cessnas, but this video is truly amazing. Thanks so much.

Nick, as others have stated, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE consider more aircraft reviews. This is an excellent review and for people like myself who have always wanted to fly or learn to fly but have health issues that prevents them from doing so, this type of video allows people to live and dream through you video to experience things they may never get the opportunity to do. Thank you for such a wonderful, awesome, learning video! Absolutely FANTASTIC!

Totally great Helicopter review and flight lesson. I just started looking at helicopter video's, and this one was the most instructive yet. I was a crew chief on a UH-1 gunship in Vietnam in 1967 and 1968, loved the flying just not the location.

Hi Nick as a 911 owner i found your last reviews great, thanks for those mate ...As an Aviator of fixed wing (and owner of a CTSW) but seriously frustrated wannabe rotary pilot I really enjoyed your review. Helicopters may be a bit out of my price range but enjoyed every minute of the ride with you guys. You got a great presence on Camera and have very good communicative skills. Not wishing to blow smoke etc just thought as a Radio presenter of 30 years i'd pass on some well deserved praise. Flying here in the UK is hideously expensive but from memory of living and flying in Colorado some years back stateside was a lot cheaper. Keep the vids coming mate better than anything on the tellie .....cheers martin

Thanks, Nick. I worked on countless US Army OH58A & C models (206 with shorter skids), doing phase inspections, repairs to flight damage, etc. It's one of the safest aircraft models (fixed or rotor) in history. Was part of a team that repaired one that had turbine failure 400' AGL. Both blades (& skin panels aft of back seat) had holes from turbine blade shrapnel, and the turbine section had broken and fallen onto the tail rotor driveshaft, scoring it. The pilot landed shortly before the tail rotor shaft would've been shorn in half.

I totally agree. The JetRanger is a beauty. As a kid growing up in the 60's, I remember seeing Bell 47's regularly flying to and from the local airport, BUT by the early 70's the JetRangers were taking over! I remember thinking, "Wow they look so modern!" I especially like the low skid version because of its bad-ass stance.

I was lucky enough to get a front seat flight in a 206LongRanger at a local show this summer in the UK. The most comfortable flight ever with an excellent Pilot. The most memorable part about the start up procedure is the low frequency bounce and the smell of kerosene smoke etc. The flight was smooth and comfortable, my fear of heights was not a problem lol. I worked for about 35 years in the offshore oil and gas industry and always had a 206L on the heliport on top of our living quarters. Just about every production platform I have operated had a helipad on top of it. In the last 10 years of working offshore I got so familiar with flying in a helicopter that I actually learned how to fly the 206 in a helicopter just like this one they are in. I would ask the pilot to come out in the trainer every once in a while and he would teach me a little at a time. The first time I took the stick was amazing, I didn't realize just how little movement you had to put into the stick to have the aircraft react while at cruising speed. You just barely have to touch the stick at that speed to get a reaction. I managed to learn enough to take over flying the aircraft after we got up in the air and with the pilot's help I learned how to start up and take off from the heliport that was about 200ft above the open water of the Gulf of Mexico. I had probably 4 to 6 of the pilots that flew helicopters that all had in excess of 20,000 hours of flying time under their belt. These were old Vietnam pilots and pilots that worked for the State Dept. and other agencies. They really knew their stuff. I got along great with them but of course I was their boss and I also made sure they had the contract for us for many years. That's probably why they were so willing to help me but it goes with the turf and the perks. I have never told this story but it is true. I am pretty sure if I had to fly a helicopter or now even a fixed wing I could do it. I might be a little rusty but I could pull it off if I had to.

That was great. I feel like I might be able to fly a 206 now. (Air Force brat, basic aviation in school, lots of life experience) I've been up in a Robinson R44, R22, and a Bell 47. The latter was with a lady pilot who had soloed that morning, so it was a thrill and a half. Dad let me take off and fly a Cessna from Oceanside to Catalina Island and back, but landed it himself, JIC. Flying is wonderful. I have a Revolution Mini 500B, single seat, and a Rotorway Exec. 2 seater . I learned on a Robinson R-22. I've Always wanted to fly the jet turbine! The Bell has so much power, and All the mechanics is so fine tuned, vibration free (compared to piston) What a DREAM to fly!

Well, I'm only 10 minutes in and you've answered most questions I ever had for how to fly a helicopter. Of course I will watch the rest to see what answers I never had questions for. Great Video Nick, Thanks. Now I just need a helicopter :-)
