I read through all the comments before I wrote this. First and foremost, this video puts the viewer right there. Excellent quaility. The pilot's skill is evident in his very smooth and precise manouvers. None of his actions were stressful to the helicopter, and he did not descend too quickly into the rotor wash to be a concern. I agree that the telephoto effect (which tends to compress the viewing prespective) makes the tail rotor appear that it's too close, but that's an optical illusion. This is a great opportunity to see an historical maching like the Bell 47 performing basic manouvers.

Thanks for posting this Vid.... I don't think the camera man was as close as you think. Camera's tend to play optical tricks. I think the camera was zoomed somewhat also. This guy is a very good pilot and I don't think he would endanger anyone.

It looks like the pilot has experience by the way he flys it. Not reckless, just very accurate.
There are some vehicles that are iconic. The Harley WLA for one, and the Bell 47 for another. Cars? Well, who cares about cars? They don't have the same appeal to me.

tail rotor failure in his future,,,,,,,,,,,,, .........MY FATHER WAS A Bell 47 engine and airframe expert...........vertical takeoffs and heavy rudder with bring into your future very soon!!!!! The stress on mechanical componets in the swash plate and tail rotor assembly will fail way before timeline....................looks cool but REAL PILOTS say. bye bye broken eye
@argonwheatbelly6376 жыл бұрын
The only time I ever saw that was in M*A*S*H episodes, for quickie takeoffs by the stunt flyers. But normal use? No.
@argonwheatbelly6375 жыл бұрын
@Tom Gulbranson : yes, on an airplane they're called rudder pedals. On a helicopter their anti-torque peddles. They work differently, but they're treated the same by a lot of people who flies both. Not that they should…
@argonwheatbelly6375 жыл бұрын
I've seen too many people who treat them similarly. I didn't say it was right. (reread what I wrote) I'm more worried about blade-stalls, etc. I've seen SEL pilots think that MEL is the same, and people who think using a tricycle gear means they can automagically fly a conventional gear. [love those '42 J-Cubs]
@argonwheatbelly6375 жыл бұрын
I've seen a lot over 50 years. But you seem to have a need to pick apart whatever I say, so no. I will not continue this thread. You don't win. You don't lose. You simply have expressed your observations and opinions. I respect that, but I also know when to stop wasting time. Sometimes, people have vastly different experiences over their lives, that they cannot conceive of anything outside that realm. I wish you only the best. Keep educating. Don't compromise your personal experiences.
@argonwheatbelly6375 жыл бұрын
Tom: John Thompson posted that, not I. Please, like I use trite expressions such as, "bye bye broken eye". You and I have had different experiences, but I'm not defending John, either. Have a great day, Tom!

Wow, somebody is going to be paying for a top end overhaul soon. I won't coment on the proximity of your tailrotor to the cameraman other than as somebdoy who's been around aviation for three decades. (NOT a helo guy.) If it looks unsafe, it usually is. Be careful, Greg, nobody wants you or anybody else to get hurt. That would be tragic. If you want to demonstrate something for the masses? Demonstrate caution. Retisence. Conservative operation. Methodical flying and procedures. Blue Skies!
@68626862ful3 жыл бұрын
I hope the camera man had death and dismemberment insurance that tail rotor was getting with in swatting distance, I moved out of the way. he swung around 3 times that back end. it was kind of like the pilot was trying to take out the camera man, I wonder if the girl in the Heli was the camera mans girl and the pilot was trying to make a statement.
