This is my review of the Bell Super Air R helmet. It's a lightweight trail and enduro helmet that features MIPS and a removable chinbar.
To say this mountain bike helmet is light would be an understatement! But is it worth all the fuss? Do you need this helmet? Will it keep you safe?
Tune in to find out.

Hi have this helmet for year now. Had several falls all due bad technique 😃. 2x landed heavily on the chin bit as 2nd point of contact, 1st was arm. No damage to the helmet or my face. I had to only deal with subseqent pain and soil in between my teeth. Hinges of the bottom part stayed locked. There were no marks on my face from the impact. Then, I have several falls where a hit my head from side and back absorbed just fine. This helmet is a great combo and I have full confidence in this helmet. I am mostly riding outside park style features and sometimes natural single trails so there is absolutely no shortage of falls. This helmet companied by body armour and elbow pads is giving me confidence to try bigger jumps ....

Came off my bike January 29th 2021 and broke my collarbone and hit my head hard on the ground and blacked out. Can't actually remember the impact / fall but had GoPro on my chest so I watched it back. Originally thought I went over the bars, but I came off on the side of the bike. Accident happened off a small jump at I am guessing 30-35kmph (Lost my strava data due to watch losing battery before I synced my ride so unsure of actual speed). Anyway, got a big history of concussions and this thing definitely did its job. Didn't have any lasting side effects head wise after the crash and had precautionary CT of my brain because I woke up the day after when I was still in hospital with a slight headache and slightly sore region of my head above my temple. On later closer inspection of my helmet today I found some slight cracking below the MIPS section where the front strap attaches to the helmet, next to the front chin/ face shield clip (the one without a buckle to lock it in place). I had the chin / face shield on at the time of the accident and it did not come off at all and there was no damage to that part of the helmet.

Hi Nick. I’m sorry to hear that. That sounds like a really nasty crash. Glad to hear you’re ok though. Be careful mate! Also reassuring to hear that the Air did a good job, that’s very encouraging. Take it easy 👍

This helmet was actually impact tested in a lab by an insurance company in Sweden and got the second best impact absorption next to the Hövding. It got the best recommendation as an over all winner.

I agree with you that it is an incredibly comfortable helmet. I have managed a few ride with mine so far, and it's brilliant, the airflow is outstanding, and the 'fit and feel' of it is flawless. For those bitching about the lack of bulk re the face guard, I brought it for slightly more (than normal) "trails" where I want some more coverage than a normal TRAIL helmet. If you want DH, get the Super DH (or another DH rated helmet), as that puppy is DOWN HILL rated, ie for super fast and aggressive DH runs. The Super Air R, per Bells website, is an "all mountain" helmet with a removable chin bar. So if that is all you are going to ride, like me, it's fit for purpose!

Why are you going through helmets so quickly? How do you determine your helmet is finished? I have a Bell Super 3R and I had a crash one one of my first rides with it. I moved it to the shelf and replaced it with the Bell DH. It hurts me to think that I need to throw it away.
@SenderoSeeker
@SenderoSeeker 3 жыл бұрын
The Bell Super 2 r was three years old so it felt right to update it. The Proframe crushed my ears so I sold it after the first ride. The Super DH was faulty and had to return it. It was also the noisiest helmet I’ve owned. The switchblade was great, but too hot for Spain. And here I am 😂

It depends how much of a hit the helmet has taken. A light crash doesn’t necessarily mean it’s done. That said, only you can know how the helmet it. Stay safe

Hi, Is $206 a good price for this Bell Super Air R? I tried on size Large but the cheek pads did not make contact with my face. I could see about 1-2 mm open gap between the face pads and my face. Not sure if I should go for medium or small now.

I bought it for OneWheeling in Florida and love it. I will never take the chin guard off. It actually keeps me cooler with it on because it blocks the sun. I don't understand bike riders who would take it off to go uphill and put it on to go downhill .. sounds like more hassle than its worth and when you take it off you have to put it somewhere where it would hurt you or break it if you fell on it. Just leave it on!

There's some trails that require a lot of pedaling going up and having even just a little bit of restriction in your breathing or anything that heats up your face and neck could get bothersome. Even neckgaiters I wore last summer for covid reasons made me miserable when I climbed.

Mtb needs more testing levels for helmets. Today you only have normal and DH. Must be space for 2 levels between that. I personally run Bell super DH. Only way to know that you have the highest protection possible.
@SenderoSeeker

Don't know about that. I guess if you go lightweight with a chin bar then somehow you have to reduce weight

Thanks for the review. I guess the issue is the safety of the chin bar. There doesn't seem to be any information regarding this, so it kind of makes the helmet...pointless? If it can't perform as a full face in terms of safety, then it becomes a helmet purely for aesthetics.
@SenderoSeeker
@SenderoSeeker 3 жыл бұрын
Well this is only my opinion of how durable the chin bar feels. I’m sure that Bell have done their work. At least I hope they have as sooner or later I’m sure I’ll end up using it as it was intended.

@@SenderoSeeker Absolutely mate, my frustration is aimed at companies that don't provide accurate safety info for something so important. I am looking at getting a convertible helmet myself, but the chin bar on some of them seems like a grey area. Appreciate the info in your review 👍

Ye man. It’s tricky. For absolute safety I’d recommend the Giro Switchblade. It’s a beast, just damned heavy!
@weedfreer
@weedfreer 3 жыл бұрын
You've picked up on something I wondered about when looking around as to what's available...and that is that this helmet is rated no more than a standard lid. As such, the only concern with regards to the chin bar is that it does not effect the helmets ability to pass the standard safety rating. Yet, and here's the kicker, this thing is marketed as a rugged trail/enduro helmet! A few manufacturers are doing this...and I believe it's somewhat of a scandle! If a parent bought this as they're aware their kidda is doing more adventurous stuff thinking it will protect them, they're gonna be in for a shock if they were to ever have a big spill!
@SenderoSeeker

To be honest I have no idea. Someone else left a comment on here talking about a big crash whilst wearing the Air. Apparently it held up very well and did its job... he didn’t do so well. Hopefully I won’t need to test it to such extremes.

reason I'm looking is where I ride there are a lot of muddy rocky trails. Im 40 odd now and came off last summer finding a rock with my chin. Fortunately, I only split the skin...and got a bit of blood on the bike during the ride home. Trip to A&E and some glue and all was well once again 😅🤙 👍 Only issue I have is that I don't think this helmet would've stood up to the rock is all...and it seems to have little on the inside to pad your chin line should it implode. I was gutted to be fair as, even though I was riding my 2001 26" ruggedised hardtail XC, I was still on for a KOM time down the hill!! 🤦🏻‍♂️

If you want something completely solid, look for one with DH rating. Like the Giro Switchblade or the Bell SUPER DH. I’ve had both and the Giro was very confidence inspiring. But very heavy.
@weedfreer
@weedfreer 3 жыл бұрын
@@SenderoSeeker yeah I've looked at both...the giro also has a chinstrap like it was designed for Moto trials riders. I'm fancying the Bell if I'm honest...although I've heard they can be a wee bit on the noisy side though. Not sure what size to go for though as I have a 61/62 cm heed...right on the border line between L and XL 🤦🏻‍♂️
