'Belle' Star Gugu Mbatha-Raw is the Only British Actor Who's Never Done a Period Film

Tom Wilkinson, Emily Watson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and the all-star cast of Amma Asante's drama praise the director for attention to detail in their movie.
"I would say she is a genius. She is so direct in what she wanted and I don't think there is any fat on the movie whatsoever," says Sam Reid.

This was a great depiction of Bells life I think. Great actresses/actors & a great story which I never knew about.

I was pleasantly surprised by this film. My initial reaction was that it was just another slave type movie with a slap or whipping scene tucked in it somewhere. To the contrary, Didi was dignified, vocal and stood up for herself. That was a relief and made this film pleasant to watch. There was no cringing. Unlike 12 years a slave. Which i refuse to see. Looking forward to more work from Amma!

I don't know about that. The film is about her life. which I'm sure was far different from "regular" Africans living in England at that time. The Africans living on the colonies where treated the same as Africans in America.

I really enjoyed.. love how beautifully both girls were dressed.. love the love story glad she choices love over status when marriage and Sam Reid is beautiful

terrific movie...wife and I just got back from eeing it and doing some research about it. Hauntingly beautiful music score coupled with a rich full story that's true, makes this a must see for all...now I want to see that painting in person!

Great that there's a feature film on Dido Belle. Now we need more period dramas that reflect the diversity of Jane Austen's England.

omg it's Draco malfoy! just kidding. Tom Felton. I really loved this movie. I am thankful that I know this story because living in America we for some reason never talk about slavery In England. I also always wondered what life was like for biracial people back then . since blacks were absurdly considered 3/5 of people, what was a biracial child considered? 4/5 of a human? how stupid.

Yes. But, as you know, she wasn't in period costume. I guess because Gugu was playing a thoroughly 21st Century woman in 'Lost in Austen', who never had to don period costume, her claim of never being in a costume drama until now, is true.

for anyone wondering the movie is 90% fake, dido in real life didn't have wealth so half the movie couldn't even happened and then in real life John daviniere was a servant from another household another half of the movie also couldn't happened... and the minor detail also changed, Elizabeth is rich and her father visited her regularly at Kenwood after he was back from Ambasadorial job even the painting was changed in the movie. we knew these few fact for certain so intead of basing the movie off that, her real story was silenced and turned into fake Bridgerton
