She was the first grave that I visited that got me started on my cemetery adventures!

When Belle was a teenager she was held under house arrest by a Union officer at the Matthew Ritchey home in Newtonia Mo. She played piano for her captors all night. They held her to keep her from warning her brother and his solders that they had set a trap to capture them. When daylight came they thought they had held her long enough to prevent her from warning them. On her way to her horse she broke off switches before she mounted. She took a shortcut across a mountain and still got there in time to warn them. G.W. Miller of the 101 ranch also had a store there for a few years before moving to Kansas. The Ritchey home is still there.

I enjoyed your story about Belle Starr, it was very interesting. I've heard about her over the years but you told some things I didn't know. You did a great job investigating her background and her lifestyle, in general. Enjoyed, the various photos of Belle Starr and her family and acquaintances, as well. Back in the 1930's, a man that was called Old Golddigger that used to charge people to see the grave. Back then, the way to enter the property was to the north from the dirt road. The original tomb stone was chipped away from people.

I was hired by the owner of the property to clear some of the brush and small trees at the property a couple years ago at the home site and around the well. It’s a pretty place.

Nice video, Rhett. A couple of stories about Belle: Fort Smith was the nearest “big” town. It is about 65 miles east of Younger’s Bend. Most business was done there. Belle would commonly ride from her cabin to Fort Smith, side-saddle, IN ONE DAY. She was tough! You are correct in saying she only stole horses (maybe a little cattle), and harbored outlaws. Regardless, of this, she had quite the reputation as being dangerous. During one period of time, there was a local politician who was doing some self promotion at Belle’s expense. “That woman doesn’t belong on the street!” Or something to that order. One day, while in town, Belle chanced to meet this fellow on the street. “You’re so and so, right?” He stammered “yes.” “You’ve been spreading bad things about me, right?” “Y-y-yes.” By now, he was sure he was about to be shot. “You go around to the back of my horse.” He did. “Raise his tail.” He did. “Kiss it.” She was never bothered again! Pearl was a prostitute in Fort Smith, and later became a madame. She had a house of ill repute on “the row,” near the river. She lived in a nice neighborhood, far away from there. Tried to keep her name and occupation quiet. I believe the front window of the house had a star surrounded by a pearl necklace etched into it. The row burned many years ago, and there is one brick building standing. It was a nice steakhouse at one time, Miss Pearl’s I believe was the name.

I wish they could build a sturdy fence around the grave site, it would help some to keep out vandals, and such. Maybe they should charge a small fee for viewing the grave site, this would help with upkeep, and ward off unseemly people. At this rate there won't be much left of it in a few years. Loved the story, and narration you always nail it. Thank you.

Wow! What a story! Belle certainly was an interesting woman, to say the least. I might look into trying to find a copy of the movie with Elizabeth Montgomery. I used to love her in the old show "Bewitched" and I'm very curious to see her performance as Belle Starr. Looks like it was a "made for TV" movie so I have no idea if it was ever released on DVD or not but I'm gonna check around! Great video, Rhetty! I'm really surprised there's no evidence left of her cabin. Judging by the size of the place in the photos you'd think something would be left of it somewhere. I bet you're right -- if you dig down deep enough, there might be old remnants hidden, perhaps even a pile of field-stones from an old, collapsed chimney and/or fireplace. Too bad it's on Private Property 'cause a little excavating would be fun! Thanks for sharing this! Good stuff!!! Take care, Valerie

I Love hearing and watching history about my family. Cole Younger is my great-great grandfather.

My best friends' grandfather grew up not far from the dam. He knew Belle and said he was at a dance in Whitefield and she was there. Her last husband was the jealous type and came in there drunk wearing his gun , threatened the guy she was dancing with. She whipped him with her riding quirte and took his gun.

I'd swear I must have visited Belle Starr's grave just after you filmed this. I remember the same items left at the grave plus I left some glass "dragons tears." I was there Halloween.

Nice video, I really enjoyed that. Something you might look into - There's a cool story (true) about a Cherokee I believe that was accused of murder in Talequah, and he holed up in the hills around Talequah somewhere and they fought it out (tribal police, or us marshals) and eventually hauled a cannon up to his house to blow it up, and I think he still escaped. His whole family was killed I believe. It involved Judge Parker, and I may have my stories crossed, but something about a cherokee court house and that court house is still there just off highway 412. It's a brick building. I came across the story of this outlaw when I was doing some genealogy research. Seems like they finally caught him and killed him, and then found out he was innocent. I looked it up, Ned Christie was his name.

You do such fabulous videos. Thank you for showing the path. We're debating about going out toward Arkansas and Oklahoma for next years vacation and I was looking to see how the path to the grave was to see if my wife was able to do it. I'll show her your video and see what she thinks. It may be a solo hike for me. How long do you think it would take to hike up and back?

Was in a car accident a couple weeks ago and lost my phone so just now got out of the hospital and catching up on the videos I missed. I was wondering what exactly ended up happening to her kids? If they left Oklahoma or if they lived out the rest of their lives somewhere close by.

I like to hear about her, she was very famous and the actress jean tyranny her first movie role was to play belle star. I just love going to cemeteries, I get on your channel and find one that I want to visit, I study up on it and save my bucks and go. Covid stopped me but I am back to travels.

Just yesterday I learned she’s my great-great-great-great-great aunt. Ever since then I’ve been very curious about her story.

I really enjoy learning about America's West outlaws...quite fascinating! I wonder if the land Ms. Starr is buried at is still owned by family?

I used to live in Siloam Springs and there are a lot of stories around that area about Belle Starr. she used to hang out around West Siloam Springs and vicinity. She also hung out around a town south of Siloam Springs by the name of Cincinnati. Also while living there I became friends with two young men that were cousins that were descended from the youngers they lived on the Illinois River it was fun to go down to their place and go swimming in the river. Also there is a story passed down in my family that my great-great uncle Thomas Crow ran with the youngers and is buried in Texas but I have not been able to find anything on that at all so whether it's true or not I doubt it cuz there's other stories in my family that could be not true. For instance my mother's grandmother is supposed to be 100% Cherokee I haven't been able to find any Cherokee blood in her at all she is always listed as white and all the census. Also she was adopted when she was a baby her. These parents found her along the trail and took her and then adopted her and they're the ones that said she was Cherokee so who knows. But if they were saying she was Cherokee then why didn't they say that in the census? They said that she was born in 1860 while they were moving to Arkansas from either Kentucky or Tennessee. thank you for posting this is very educational as you are also sir. My grandfather (on my mothers side) was known for telling tales, as grandfathers often do. He had always said that we were related to Belle Star, and we all took that with a grin and just let him tell his tales. As it turns out, my brother got into the dna history a few years ago, and we are realted to Belle Star, very distantly but grandpa wasn't stringing us along on that one

What a shame graves are treated this way. It makes sense that Jim was the one who killed Belle since they seemed to have an explosive marriage. I noticed that her Easton has worn away compared to what it was like when new.. Time and elements.. Rest in Peace Belle.. Btw.. her current headstone, though worn by time appears to be the same one in the old photos in your video. Someone mentioned it was a different one..

I have a friend that owns the local Dairy shack here in S MO named Cole Younger, he is named after this Cole who is his I believe 3 or 4th cousin. The Youngers James along with the Quantrill's came through S. Mo quite often stayin a lot in caves here

There is a road in Newton County Arkansas called The Twisted Lady Trail, for Belle Starr. Don't know if she ever hung out around Jasper Ar.or not, I have been told a lot of Outlaws did.

5:36. That town south east of Dallas is Balch Springs where the Shirley's moved to. It was a stage coach stop. The last person she beat the spit out of, killed her. She used a qwert, is what I've been told.

Very good history lesson here. It's kind of sad that she is buried in such a lonely spot but I'm sure at the time it didn't seem so lonely. I wish people would have more respect for burial locations of well known people such as her. Would love to see a accurate movie done about her life.
