For our latest railfan trip, we’re making the trip to Bellevue in northern Ohio
The city is about halfway between Cleveland and Toledo.
It’s been a railroad town for more than 150 years.
The Nickel Plate Road (New York, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad Company) ran through Bellevue from 1882 until 1964, when it merged with the Norfolk & Western Railway.
Five NS main lines converge here.
With all that rail history, it’s no surprise the town is home to the Mad River & Nickel Plate Road Museum.
The museum opened in 1976.
Make sure to plan some time to walk around.
Even if it’s closed due to a pandemic, there is plenty to look at and it’s all in very good condition.
Several of the cars and engines have placards with their history.
There’s a little covered area too but be careful, because the trains can sneak up on you.
Northeast of town, is Norfolk Southern's Moorman yard.
At 5.5 miles long, it’s the railroad’s largest yard, and second largest in North America, only behind Union Pacific’s North Platte Yard in Nebraska.
The company renamed it after former NS CEO and President Charles “Wick” Moorman.
The yard was originally opened by the Norfolk & Western Railway in 1966
NS spent $160 million to double the size of the yard in 2015.
It built 38 new tracks, bringing the number of classification tracks to 80.
The yard went from being able to handle 1,800 cars a day, to as many as 3,600.
It includes two hump tracks, and engine & car repair shops.
There’s just one problem, the yard was pretty much empty.
In June, NS announced it was stopping all hump operations at the yard and flat switching would take its place.
It also shifted some operations to other facilities.
I saw two Wheeling and Lake Erie trains in the distance.
I love the Rio Grande paint scheme.
Next to the tracks, you’ll find Kemper Rail Park.
The land was donated by Stephen Kemper, who owned Kemper Iron & Metal.
The viewing platform is part of the museum and is open 24 hours a day.
It’s across from the Bellevue tower.
The tower is closed, but NS still uses it for maintenance of way crews.
Bellevue is well worth the drive and spending a day in the area.
I hope to go back once the museum opens again.
For our next trip, we’re heading to Louisville, Kentucky.
We’ll see several bridges and another yard.
Until then, have a great day.

Thanks for the memories. I grew up halfway between Bellevue and Cleveland. I remember my parents taking me to the museum in the 80's. About 2010 I took my kids there when we lived in the area temporarily and again in 2019 on vacation to Sandusky. This wants me to get a job with NS after I retire from the Navy!

Outstanding video work. You might add that Bellevue yard was built by Nickel Plate Road not N&W. In 1966 N&W may have added a hump and rebuilt the yard, but this was always the biggest yard on the NKP. Nice to see the roundhouse still survives. Would have been great to be there in the 1950s to see it full of Nickel Plate 2-8-4s.

Thanks for the info Keith, I do appreciate it. That makes sense, I must have misread something regarding the N&W adding/rebuilding. You'll be happy to know, nearly a year later the roundhouse is still there. The yard is a little busier too. I am working on a follow-up video I hope to have out within a few weeks. Have a great day!

It's a great afternoon with interactive exhibits that you can actually get up into the locomotives and rolling stock including the passenger cars. A great gift store with surprisingly low prices. That NKP caboose at 3:12 used to be at an operation I worked at in SW Ohio. When that operation shut down in 2012, it was sold to a former employee, later it was restored to the nice looking piece here. Fun fact, I used to use it as a set when I did glamour and pin-up photography during our down time. If only that thing could talk...good times. This is some gorgeous trackage and photog of !! Nice to see standard freight [car] trains as opposed to container/double stack boredom you see in/out port cities like Los Angeles, where I live... The way I see it, the containers start showing up in majority when CLOSEST to where freighter and tanker ships dock; containers going: truck / train / ship ship / train/ truck, to a large extent [say 89% the time]. Out in rural areas more standard train car / loading dock loading dock / train car activity goes on [say, 92+% the time] as is seen here..Just a rough guesstimate... It's understandable, though; the entire shipping system.. (I know ! Early Inter-modal was nearly all Piggy-Back service [I DO like to see ]).... I just prefer to look at the Pre-Inter-Modal era TYPE of rolling stock than hundreds of spine/well-cars with corrugated rectangular, near (sorry, never took to it) dumpster-looking, drab metal boxes atop them, and again is why I'm enjoying this video so much !! Now, If we could only somehow put an end to tagging !!

Planning a trip to Ohio, What is your favorite railpark out of the three main ones in OH? The one in Fostoria, Deshler, or here in Bellevue? Are these the same lines that go through both other railparks? How much traffic is there usually as of now, sorry if i come off as “demanding” in any way, thank you in advance!
@nkyrailfan
@nkyrailfan 2 жыл бұрын
I would say Fostoria is the busiest because it has NS and CSX coming through, but it's not that great if you're trying to film anything because it is quite a large park. Deshler has two CSX lines (one of which goes east to Fostoria). It's much smaller but much closer to the action and it doesn't have any fences to get in your shot if filming. Bellevue isn't so much a railpark as it is an exit from a yard. It does have a "railpark" but it's really just a shelter to get out of the sun. Every time I go I usually get just south of the tracks so the sun isn't in all my shots. Deshler and Bellevue should both have a good amount of traffic for you. My recommendation would be to go to Fostoria and Deshler or Bellevue. Each one is only around 40 minutes from Fostoria (in opposite directions) and you can get a good mix between the two. I do not know about traffic volumes but they all should be busy. Hope this helps and good luck. I hope you have a great time!

I loved the video, but the radio talking was just annoying, it would been better if you was narrating the video itself, just my opinion

Thank you. I try to find as much as I can to talk about the places I visit but there usually isn't that much out there. I'll try to get a little more narration in and a little less radio chatter.

Really bad design for a yard. Wonder why they got rid of the hump and only flat shift now?

I believe it's because of precision scheduled railroading. I went back a few months ago and it looked like they were using the hump again, but after watching the video, it looks like it was just more flat track switching over the hump and not actually using it

Very wasteful of NS to invest so heavily only to quit using it. How foolish

Bellevue Yard isn't considered the 2nd largest yard in North America as how you got that Idea is beyond me at only being 5 1/2 miles long with only 80 tracks across ha-ha. Conway Yard in Pennsylvania Held the Title as Largest Yard in the World for more than 50 years and is stated at many railroad museums as one of the Largest to ever exist at 6.2 miles long with a total of 107 tracks across right now. North Platte yard is a Copy of Conway yard as you may have Not known of this as the architect designed both yards, now a days North Platte holds the Largest Yard title, do I need to say more.

Norfolk Southern is where I got the information. It says it is the largest yard in its system and the second largest in North America. It's in the second paragraph on the third page of this NS created document: "Now, this railroad town has a new distinction: It is home to Norfolk Southern’s largest and North America’s second-largest freight car classification yard - only UP’s Bailey Yard in North Platte, Neb., is larger." www.nscorp.com/content/dam/nscorp/bizns/2015-BizNS-Articles/Winter-2015/8500_BizNS_Winter2015_WEB.pdf

@@nkyrailfan Alright so I did some digging of my own and have found out that Bellevue Yard only became the second largest yard in 2015 and the Hump was shut down in 2020 and was turned into a push yard, plans of reopening the hump in 2023, 5 years of Bellevue being the Second Largest as it's Not 100% back to its full momentum, means it's Not the second Largest anymore said from the Vice president Jake” Allison. as before that Elkhart Yard Elkhart, IN was the Second Largest Hump yard took the spotlight in 82 and before that was Conway Yard. And going by NS official website page Conway is still considered Biggest Rail Yard of the North-East as it states on many pages that the former PRR made famous. There is a difference between Biggest and Largest.
