Bellroy Lite Totepack: Why go for anything else?

Here are my first impressions of the Bellroy Lite Totepack. It's a tote, it's a backpack, it's a totepack?
This is an 18L water resistant totepack that's just 415g (under a pound!). Spoiler alert: It's great

Thanks for reviewing this bag! I haven't seen many reviews so far. I wonder how comfortable it is on the back if I don't carry something flat like a laptop. My daily stuff is a lunch bag, waterbottle, book and a few small items. I feel like it might make it too bulky at the bottom of the bag perhaps.

Yeah it does end up protruding a bit if you have a few small items, but I don't think it would be uncomfortable unless you go past a certain weight, in my opinion.

Man, so bellroy just released a "lux" version of this bag so now I'm torn. It's called the Laneway Tote, has "sleeker" materials, adds a sleeve for the laptop, weighs 85grams more, lacks the opening tether, pads the back area a bit more, but is around $30 more. I wonder what you think about it. The dimensions for the bag on the website say that they're different, but the pictures (which are clearly photoshopped) show they're the same size. Honestly, the dimensions on the website aren't trustworthy, but they look like they should be the same bag.

Oh my I can't keep up haha (unless Bellroy if you're reading this please send me one for review) Just eyeballing the pics it does look to be 99% the same functionality but just with more "lux" materials. However, interesting that their new offering doesn't claim to be water resistant either. I wonder if that means the exterior is a bit more structured -- the downside of the Lite Totepack is that it's not the most structured bag out there and can be flimsy if you're just chucking in a few separate ite,s.

@@PGBlanks I think that's definitely a possibility that it has more structure. Good catch on the lack of water resistance. That may or may not be a good thing because I'm not a huge fan of water resistant zippers because they're more difficult to open. Then again if you're using it mostly as a tote then I guess that wouldn't matter as much for the main pocket.

that looks like a great bag, too! problem with this one is it doesn't have dedicated protection for something like a laptop. but the fjallraven looks to have this?

I'm 178cm and it's short enough to not drag if the backpack straps are stowed away!

Just curious why you went with this bag instead of the Wonder Tote. Then again, I really dig the fact that you can backpack carry and shoulder carry. I think it's nice that it doesn't have a dedicated laptop sleeve which ends up taking space from the padding when I'm not carrying laptop. I'm assuming you had the same thoughts as well? As for the lack of loop for luggage, I'm assuming one could just crisscross the straps and loop it around their luggage handle. Also another question, how is it's packability? Its it easy to stuff into a annother luggage?

Hey! Yes exactly. The priority for me was being able to have it both be a shoulder tote and a backpack and have it be my one bag for work + travel. I personally didn't really mind the lack of laptop sleeve or luggage pass through. It's very rollable actually because of the Lite fabric. You can just roll it up or squash it down when packing it into luggage.

Thanks sir Paolo! Does the bag sag and lose its structure when you put too many items? That’s the only thing I’m concerned about and stoppjng me from getting this over the tokyo totepack. Cheers

Actually yeah you're right it does sort of scrunch up around the bottom backpack straps when it's heavy. I guess workaround is to prop a laptop or something similarly flat against your back (which I always travel with anyway) to help give it structure 😅 I'm ok with this compromise personally

No unfortunately! They'll dangle and there's no way to shorten them

I wouldn’t expect that the straps are too comfortable in backpack mode, but how’s the strap padding and comfort?

The straps themselves are pretty comfortable for daily use (But I'll have less than 3kg of stuff in my bag). When it gets heavier I guess the challenge is more the tote sagging due to lack of structure, so the bag feels a bit heavier on your lower back (not due to the strap comfort). The "thumb loops" here do add a bit of support. I'll need to take it on a longer walk with heavy gear to have a conclusive view!
