Note the difference between English change ringing and European ringing. In Europe bell ringing is random in that the bells follow no sequencial pattern, in fact the bells clash with one another, also most bells are rung with electric motors. In Britain bells are manually rung and bells swing through full circle zllowing bells to be controlled and moved in orderly sequence. At Westminster Abbey there are 10 bells hence 10 ringers. Ever sequence is different and is based on mathematical algorithms. Tns type of ring has been going on in Britain since the early 1600s. This type of ringing exists in other countries to but is less common. Ireland, North America Canada, Australia and New Zealand all have English change ringing

I'm sitting in Jan 2021 having lived in Australia for close to ,50 years now. My dad, a Whitechapel bell hanger, one of the last jobs he did in 1971 was hanging the new 10, at the Abbey.along with other bell hangers I knew. the method they were ringing is called 'stedman caters' stedman is the name of the method and caters is the amount of bells they were ringing the method on (caters = 9 bells). the deepest pitched bell, the tenor, which goes bong at the end doesn't get counted for caters methods. if the tenor was part of the method, going off of the back, the method would become a 'royal' method (royal = 10 bells). because westminster abbey is the royal church (the one used by the queen / king), it becomes apparent why westminster abbey has 10 bells.

I was married to a British man. We were married in the country of England. In a church in Combe Floury. The whole time I was out of the church the church bells rang.

English church bell are hung differently from almost anywhere else, they are hung upright with the bell at the top, whilst elsewhere the bell hangs down. This has a big impact on how the bells sound and how they are wrung.

I will forever associate the bells of Westminster Abbey with the death of Princess Diana. I distinctly remember them ringing after her death and asking my mother why they were ringing after something so solemn. To me, they represent an eerie feeling, as they sound joyous but were forever tainted for me by that event.
