Belly of The Beast Cuba

Belly of The Beast Cuba

Күн бұрын

On July 11, unprecedented protests erupted across Cuba. Most media organizations portrayed the demonstrations as a cry for freedom against Communism. But the reality was far more complex. Journalist Liz Oliva Fernández explores the root causes of the devastating economic crisis that has pushed Cuba to the brink. She takes the viewer to Cuba’s working class neighborhoods, where we see the impact of ever-intensifying U.S. sanctions during the COVID pandemic and the near fulfillment of a 1960 State Department memo justifying the purpose of the U.S. embargo: “[to deny] money and supplies...to decrease...wages, to bring about hunger, desperation, and overthrow of government.”

If it is true that younger Cubans are increasingly blaming the Cuban government for their problems instead of the US, it is in large part due to social media having made them stupider and caused them to lean more to the right from increased contact with right-leaning people outside their country.

I wonder how you understand repressing and criminalizing Cubans for exercising fundamental rights as social media making them stupider. Is exercising fundamental rights right leaning? Is exercising fundamental rights stupid? Who exactly is to blame for the arbitrary detentions, summary, unjust processes, beatings, the repression of the rights to assemble, to demonstrate, to occupy the public space, to dissent from the government? The US? Who do you think those harassed, beaten, imprisoned Cubans should be blaming? I’ll tell you: the Cuban dictatorship.

Exactly. Social media is the perfect tool to incite colour revolution among youth. It is very easy to use abstract postmodernist, “progressive” rhetoric that co-opts elements of leftism, and those who do not understand global trade and economics, and who don’t have a solid grasp on history and the way that leftist and revolutionary movements were crushed by imperialism and western hegemony in the past, will easily fall prey to the reactionary, shallow slogans on social media and attractiveness of the supposed easily attained relative affluence and widespread higher standard of living in the global north that they see online.

The situation for the conservative Cuban exile community is very simple: They all say that the embargo and sanctions do not affect the Cuban economy and the Cuban people, and that it’s all a lie from the Cuban government… Okay. If that’s true, then the Cuban exile community should be the first ones to want the embargo and sanctions to end, IN ORDER TO show that Cubas the problem, and the government won’t be able to use the embargo/sanctions excuse anymore! It would be a perfect win for them and they would be proving the entire global community (which disagrees with them) WRONG! I mean, they are SO CONFIDENT that nothing will change if the embargo and sanctions are removed. Well let’s prove the Cuban government wrong, the United Nations wrong, the majority of countries wrong, and the majority of Americans wrong! Let’s prove them all wrong! But at the end of it, the conservative Cuban exile community for some reason doesn’t want to prove themselves right… strange…. And it’s because they know deep down that things WILL change for the better if the embargo and sanctions are removed, but if that end up happening, they will have to carry the blame of all the balsero deaths of the 90s and carry the blame for all the misery Cuba has endured for 60+ years.

@TheSunchaserElMalo

Yeah, though I mean, I don’t think it’s that countries don’t want to stand up to the US fearing it’s wealth, since the United Nations and most countries of the world have all shamed the US and have called on them to end the embargo and sanctions. I think the main problem is the conservative Cuban exile community that, despite being a super small minority in the US, somehow has a say in US policy towards Cuba. There needs to be some sort of Left/anti-Conservative Cuban media that gets created in Miami and which calls out the leading figures of conservative Cubans (Juan Manuel Cao, Otaola, Marco Rubio, Maria Elvira Salazar, etc.) and challenges them directly and calls out their lies, so that public sentiment moves away and so that less people care about what the conservative Cubans have to say. They should recognize and acknowledge that they are a minority. We have to strike at the heart of their movement, meaning protests, marches, etc. There just needs to be a massive organization effort created, and let the conservative Cubans of south Florida know that there are more of us than they think. Also, no hate to Cuban Americans. I am Cuban, born in Cuba, now living in South FL. I am singling out those who support embargo+sanctions.

The answer is NEVER.

@@xwilly5552 Nicaragua's economy was growing to the point it was equal to Honduras's and set to be higher. The competent rich who invested in Nicaragua weren't attacked; the poor were helped, and that help spread upward into the lower middle class and middle class. People who have money spend it and everyone lives better than they had under 17 years of NeoLiberalism. The mess in 2018 (not a massacre of peaceful non-violent unarmed students but street fighting with fire arms that killed 22 cops and few actual students than that) cause an economic hit. Covid's economic hit was not as bad as other countries since the government didn't do shutdowns, but encouraged mask wearing, social distancing, and left enforcement to private enterprise and individual state offices. And the economy, according to the World Bank, started to grow again. The detentions of various people were of people who'd been accepting US aid and advice on how to overthrow the FSLN government. Various people who criticized the government without going to the US for funding and advice on creating riots weren't arrested. So, now in the same boat as Cuba. Cuba began to be less restrictive when Obama loosened some of the US embargos and reestablished diplomatic relationships. I noticed that the current Cuban government made some course corrections when its people took to the streets for two days: more room for larger private enterprises, dropping tariffs on food and medicine brought down by visiting relatives, and work on the electrical grid to improve that. Nicaragua's economy is mixed and focuses on the small businesses and family farms so everyone has a stake in the country. Health care is three tier: free (basic, no frills, triage that favors women with problem pregnancies and people who are in shock from blood loss). It's poor. It doesn't have oil, iron ore, or coal deposits, so every drop of jet fuel, everything made of steel or plastic is imported. Every Neo-Liberal government has done away with the free medical sector and stopped national equitable funding for education, leaving funding of schools and payment of teachers' salaries up to the communities, which worked for wealthier communities but which was a disaster for the poorer locations.

@@manjelos Blockade was untaken to promote overthrow of a popular government. This is the declassified document. 499. Memorandum From the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Inter-American Affairs (Mallory) to the Assistant Secretary of State for Inter-American Affairs (Rubottom)1 Washington, April 6, 1960. SUBJECT The Decline and Fall of Castro Salient considerations respecting the life of the present Government of Cuba are: 1. The majority of Cubans support Castro (the lowest estimate I have seen is 50 percent). 2. There is no effective political opposition. 3. Fidel Castro and other members of the Cuban Government espouse or condone communist influence. 4. Communist influence is pervading the Government and the body politic at an amazingly fast rate. 5. Militant opposition to Castro from without Cuba would only serve his and the communist cause. 6. The only foreseeable means of alienating internal support is through disenchantment and disaffection based on economic dissatisfaction and hardship. If the above are accepted or cannot be successfully countered, it follows that every possible means should be undertaken promptly to weaken the economic life of Cuba. If such a policy is adopted, it should be the result of a positive decision which would call forth a line of action which, while as adroit and inconspicuous as possible, makes the greatest inroads in denying money and supplies to Cuba, to decrease monetary and real wages, to bring about hunger, desperation and overthrow of government. The principal item in our economic quiver would be flexible authority in the sugar legislation. This needs to be sought urgently. All other avenues should likewise be explored. But first, a decision is [Page 886]necessary as to the line of our conduct. Would you wish to have such a proposal prepared for the Secretary?2

If a group of nations had the balls to stand up to the United States they might organise an International Conference about Cuba to agree the path forward. In the event that US sanctions were declared illegal under international law, suppliers and banks could be supported by imposing severe penalties for interference. For example, the threat of nationalisation without compensation of US businesses operating abroad in response to US fines and sanctions. Political influence by big business would change the executive and legislative climate pretty damn quickly.

Everyone who is concerned about Cuba or who may question why working class people and others in the U.S should be concerned about Cuba, should watch this video. It gives the Cuban people's reality of the situation there - what has been done right, what needs to be corrected, and the role of the 60 year old -in recent years intensified U.S economic blockade in this situation. Watch the entire series, episodes 1-5. Personally I think this episode and previous ones mirror what a lot of us learned directly from Cuban people, during education/culture- based trips that many took over last two decades or so: through THEIR socialist process, they maintain what has been done right, they fight to correct problems that exist (both economic and social) and that the embargo should end.

Well, socialist process brought other countries to breakdown, eastern Europe was 1990 looking worst as some african countries
@jasoncorley5703
@jasoncorley5703 2 жыл бұрын
@@manjelos What existed in Eastern Europe was a workers' state only in name and only by way of the basic means of production being nationalized. Without workers' democracy, there existed in fact a bureaucratic police state, which unfortunately most "socialist"countries had become. This trend is NOT inevitable, though. If Cuba WERE like those other socialist countries in Europe, it would have fallen apart in the 90s, along with the rest - and deservedly so. In spite of problems that in fact do exist in Cuba (problems that we in U.S really DO NOT have a clear idea about, because of exaggerations and lies that we are constantly fed through media regarding Cuba), Cubans in their great majority fight to maintain their process. Now socialism in Africa, with the exception of revolutionary Burkina Faso under Tomas Sankara, technically has yet to become about. There was Ghana in 50s, under Kwame Nkrumah and Zimbabwe under Mugabe and Qadaffi in Libya but these to varying degrees imitated some of the mistakes of their Eastern Europe, Soviet, Chinese counterparts. Sankara's govt, on the other hand, WAS building popular democracy. In 1987, internal conflict among those in govt who did not like Sankara's popular democratic process, a process very similar to that of Grenada in 1979 and Cuba at the beginning of it's revolution, arranged and carried out the assassination of Sankara - leading to the overthrow of revolution.

The IMF ( International Monetary Fund) is available to all countries provided the country repays the debts. Cuba failed to repay. Now they cannot borrow money. The Cuban government should try to rectify this.

Its is so absurd to talk about "the war against Cuba"... There is no such thing as a war against Cuba, I'm Cuban and all this series is super biased. The narrative about being the small and pacific nation being attacked from the big and powerful nation has been created since way too long by the government to avoid any accountability towards the cuban people. Cuba is a prison, there isn't any kind of freedom. Nor political nor economic nor expression freedom. For 60 plus years rules only one political party: The Communist Party, and it is illegal to form any kind of opposition. Everybody who thinks different is locked in. People live with fear, knowing that they can't speak their minds. Millions of cubans have left the country, even in the most dangerous ways.There is no external explanation for that, there is no blockage that can explain that. The only explanation for such a disgrace is the tyranny in charge in Cuba.

Cuba today, although most Cubans claim not to believe in God, is a much more righteous nation in the eyes of God than the nation 80 miles away that claims to be Christian. Jesus said, "Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you." (Matthew 5: 10-12)

@@Southside1234 Yeah, it's sad, but Cuba, supposedly a nation of atheists, has been persecuted for more than 50 years by a nation that calls itself Christian. We'll see. Castro studied under the Jesuits, and apparently decided to keep his own faith under wraps because he needed the Russians, since the Americans wanted nothing to do with him. No telling what he was in private. But he sure had a lot of enemies, which is usually a good sign that you're doing something right.
