@@MrGoldenthroat I can agree with that. Ben E King could sing beautifully, but I think Johnnie Moore was my favorite Drifters' lead singer after Gerhardt Thrasher left the group around the mid 50's. Just listen to Gerhardt sing lead on Your Promise To Be Mine.

This is one of the greatest Pop orchestrations I've ever heard. There is so much happening inside that mix, dueling male/female choirs, a Rock session band, orchestral string section...bells? How can it sound so good through the crap speakers on my laptop? It's a wonder of the world AFAIC.

Even with all the many changes in group members over the years, The Drifters were a rock solid singing group. Hit after hit for a straight decade or more because every member of The Drifters had the voice and knew just how to use it. Not to mention Pomus and Shuman who wrote most of their great music. Always and still love all the wonderful music the "mighty" Drifters made.

The Drifters, This song is the one i remember most when I was only 4 years old back in Brooklyn NYC in 1960. It is because of this song I can remember back to being four years old and the year 1960. I am now 59. so how's that for a memory. I fell in love with his voice Ben E. and he defined one of the best era's of that group. 1959-61. he now joins the big 3 Leads of the Drifters. Clyde Mcphatter,(White Christmas)Rudy Lewis(On Broadway,Please Stay).now Ben E King. my favorite by Ben leading the drifters will always be Count the Tears. which bring back memories to the year 1960 and President Kennedy was in office. I remember seeing him in person seated on top of a man's shoulder from a crowd.

I second that MItchell! And let's not forget other great leads like Nate Nelson from The Flamingoes, Tony Williams from The Platters, Pooky Hudson from The Spaniels, Leslie Anderson from The Dubs, the late great Eugene Pitts from The JIve five, the unbeatable all time phenomenal Johny Maestro, that quickly come to my mind- I'm sure there' are other outstanding Leads, but can't focus now on them!

On this day in 1961 {March 17th} the Drifters appeared* at the Regal Theater in Chicago, IL... At the time their song "I Count the Tears' was at #23 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eleven days earlier it was in its second of two weeks at #17 on the chart, that was also its peak position on the Top 100... It reached #6 on Billboard's R&B Singles chart... It was the group's last Top 100 record with Ben E. King singing lead... Between 1954 and 1966 the group had thirty-eight Top 100 records, five made the Top 10 with one reaching #1, "Save the Last Dance for Me" for 3 weeks on October 17th, 1960... They just missed having a second #1 record when "There Goes My Baby" peaked at #2 {for 1 week} on August 17th, 1959... The week that "There Goes My Baby" was at #2, the #1 record for that week was "A Big Hunk O’ Love" by Elvis Presley... * Other acts appearing with the Drifters were Chubby Checker, Maxine Brown, Chuck Jackson, Joe Jones, Jimmy Charles, and the Blue Notes...
