I saw this when it came out. I was in high school and it was a deeply spiritual experience. When Jesus gives water to Ben Hur in the desert I sobbed uncontrollably. It’s now 2022, I am 77 and this magnificent epic holds up

The Ten Commandments, my 2nd favorite movie of the 1950s. Ben Hur was my #1 favorite. Both had my favorite actor in the lead....I guess I should take the time to mention my 3rd favorite. The Greatest Show on Earth.

The scene where Christ gives him relief and comfort in his suffering while forced marched to Tyre. That clip on how Christ defies the Roman Centurion’s orders is so powerful because we never see Christ’s face but only his presence.

Col. Robert Ingersoll (whose name means "saddle/soul of the warrior of the Norse King and God Ing) wrote a letter insisting that the meeting on the train with General Lew Wallace (the one that saw Wallace "born again" through a determination to oppose Ingersoll's agnosticism) never actually took place! However, by no coincidence at all, Tuesday September 19th 1876 - the day of the supposed encounter on the train - was the Feast of Saint Januarius (San Gennaro) - who was martyred at Pozzuoli, near Naples, Italy, in the year 305 AD, in the context of the persecution of Christians under Emperor Diacletian! Also by no coincidence at all, Wallace's Judah Ben-Hur character is living with his family - 5 years on from the Crucifixion - at Misenum (today's Miseno) - a place destroyed by the Vesuvius eruption in AD79, but also the birthplace of Saint Sossius, who was also murdered under Diacletian at Pozzuoli - a place just 2 km across the bay from Miseno... Both are close to Naples, which has a Via Ben Hur. The Bay of Naples includes the Isle of Capri, to which Emperor Tiberius retired in AD26. Tiberius in the film was played by British actor Georgh Relph - it was his last role, and he died on April 24th 1960 - the Sunday after Easter. Lewis Wallace (whose Welsh-origin name means Famed Warrior and Stranger) completed his book in early 1880, while Governor of Santa Fe (i.e. The Royal Town of the Holy Faith of Saint Francis of Assisi). Wallace's lifelong struggle was to clear his name in regard to the Battle of Shiloh in the Civil War, but the original Shiloh is in Israel, a place but also a person (in fact interpreted typically as Jesus Himself). The original Shiloh is associated with ... the Tribe of Judah and the Lion of Judah (Judah being one of the sons of Jacob and an ancestor of Jesus and the one who gave the name to Judaism). Shiloh may also equate to Siloam, with the Pool at which Jesus gave the blind beggar his sight... Jesus - when He comes again - may do so as the Lion of Judah. Judah-Ben-Hur means Judah son of Hur (where Hur may mean "something white"). The real-Biblical Ben Hur was a governor for King Solomon (also of the Tribe of Judah), while Wallace having Judah Ben-Hur's status as that a Judean Prince implies descendance from the original Judah. While the "false accusation" aspect of Wallace's story is said to be owing to "The Count of Monte Christo" (the name actually means "Mountain of Christ" in a novel about ressurection, redemption and salvation), the theme is almost certainly connected with Wallace's own feeling he had been wrongly accused ... over Shiloh the Battle. In the 1959 film of "Ben Hur" (of course made in Italy), the greatest acting achievement is that of Remington Olmsted, who plays the Roman Decurion who is looked at by Jesus after he tries to present Our Lord from giving water to Ben Hur. In 2002, April 7th (the day on which Olmsted died) was the Sunday after Easter, which is known as Divine Mercy Sunday, but also Thomas Sunday, for it was 8 days after the Crucifixion that "Doubting Thomas" needed to see Jesus and his wounds in order to be convinced and develop true faith. Remington was also born on a Sunday, and Sunday 15th 1913 was associated with "Servant of God Orlando Catanii", reflecting the way in which - in 1213 (a round 700 years befor Olmsted's birth), there was an unexpected encounter with St. Francis of Assisi for Count Orlando of Chiusi (a town about 75 km west of Assisi). When St. Francis addressed the crowd on the dangers of worldly pleasures, Orlando (also known as Roland) was so taken by the Saint's words that he rearranged his life entirely. It was thanks to Count Orlando that Francis was in place to receive his stigmata ... of the wounds ... of Christ]. Remington Olmsted did little more acting after "Ben Hur", instead owning and running "singing restaurants" in Rome, just a couple of streets down from The Vatican, and a few hundred metres from the Catacomb of San Callisto which has early Christian martyrs interned in it, and was funded by the wealh of Judah Ben-Hur at the end of the novel. Nothing is by chance - everything connects together, if you look for it. How many of the above "coincidences" were intentional, or simply achieved by the work of the Holy Spirit, I do not know... Or maybe I do!

Gore Vidal with all due respect this is a tale of Christ. Three times Christ came into Judah Ben Hurs life. He was with him and watching over him. What movie were you watching?????
@EuphroseneLabon

Gore Vidal may have wanted to make it about spurned love but Judah Ben Hur mentions how Tirza was and is in love with Messala. And of course Heston played it straight as a die. Over the many times I have seen this film, there is only a strong friendship betrayed by different political persuasions - which, as we have all discovered since 2016, can even rupture family relationships and those of long-standing friends.

A Classic film for all-time. The 2016 version was a joke-----a travesty. Only the '59 William Wyler version stands as a masterwork of cinema. -------------MJL< 75 y/o

Gore Vidal's instruction 31:33 to make Masala behave like a former lover of Ben Hur was genius. Makes the scene when they meet again very funny.

Is it any wonder that two of my favorite fictional heroes, Judah Ben-Hur and Colonel George Taylor, are both portrayed by Charlton Heston...the man was an absolute legend.
