Ben Husthwaite speaks out: how come anyone can be a shooting instructor? what can the CPSA do better? what's the point of pattern plates? (don't expect modesty!).

Completely agree. Especially with the likes of certain individuals who tell their students to swap shoulders, don't look at barrels, don't think where the clay is going 🙄 Those combinations are a Brewster for a catastrophe.

First time I’ve ever heard or seen Ben, but boy, what a refreshing outlook on the sport and coaching. If I wasn’t 67, I’d be making an appointment for shooting lessons with him to get more of his advice, both verbal and practical.

I have a lot of respect for Ben, he tells it like it is and has a great vision for the sport. I like the fact tht he focusses on processes and not on results, it makes the best difference ever.

As a new shooter this surprised me, there is more to coaching than being good at a sport. Fully agree with Ben there should be more recognised coaching qualifications. I come from Kayaking where there are a number of levels of coach both technical and sport related and as a coach I had clear guide lines on what level I could coach and exam, and what types of kayak and water I could coach with / on.

Harvey Penick was a so-so golfer but is considered one of the best golf coaches and instructors that was ever associated with the game. There are many professional golfers out there that couldn't teach a fish how to swim. I've watched Ben Husthwaite instruct on KZfaq a little and it looks like he's probably an outstanding shotgun instructor, but it's his fundamental understanding of the game and shooting process that makes him so, not his many world championships he likes to mention.

I like his videos, and I agree with a lot of what he says, particularly about the pattern plates. I have patterned shotguns before, and it never really helped me be a better clay shooter. I couldn't tell you where my clays hits on a pattern plate, but I do know when everything looks right and I pull the trigger, the clays break. Also, I could not take lessons from Ben, as much as I think he does a great job, because the way he teaches and the way I learn are almost polar opposites.

I’m a fan of Ben and I shoot at the same club as him, but I don’t entirely agree with the pattern plate remarks. I think it’s a good idea to get a rough idea of the of the POI and if it’s simply high or low based on where you point the gun. After that, totally agree that you should work on some going away trap birds. I only shoot DTL and ABT and without a pattern plate I would still be shooting under the bird. My point is, a pattern plate is a quick easy method of getting a rough idea, which can then be fine tuned on the stands
@the45er
@the45er 5 жыл бұрын
A pattern plate is extremely important in determining POI - that is, for gun fit. A shotgun has to fit and "fit" means it shoots where you're looking EVERY TIME. I personally don't believe in analyzing "patterns" ( that is, how the pellets distribute on a plate). I think that is a waste of time because you're shooting a cloud of pellets, not a two dimensional plane. If pellets came out of the end of the barrel and all lined up and went forward in a single plane, NO ONE could break 10 fifty yards crossers in a row. Ben, I agree with you if you AIM at a plate and shoot it. That tells you nothing other than may be whether or not your barrels on an o/u or sxs are regulated. But if you mount and shoot at a dot on a plate at 20 yards 3-4 times as if you were shooting that 20 yard trap shot you mention, the distribution of your shot on that plate absolutely will tell you whether your gun fits. A good stock man can look at that distribution on the plate and bend that wood to make it shoot ABSOLUTELY where you point.

Our shooting programs for both NSCA and NSSA have this. Unfortunately when you are looking for a coach there are very few following this instruction out there. In the state of California we have less then 10 level one, and no higher class instructors in the state. Having a standard program hasn’t gotten us there.

I think all shooting disciplines would do well to look at Archery GBs model for training. It is no perfect but it has all of the structure and mechanisms in place to give people a solid grounding in a new sport. Ben might be polarising with his opinions but to me he makes sense and I think he comes across as someone who would be a great coach.

Agree with some of his points, but not all shooting is CPSA based and there are other shooting Instructor Associations out there with many instructors only coaching to their abilities and do pass pupils on if required.

Interesting comments on the Pattern Board. However, as experienced as Ben is, he is down playing this crucial step,,,,in gaining confidence with a new shotgun and/or new shooter. I've never needed to "pattern" my 525 that has had who knows how many rounds down the tube, however, every shotgun I have, 20+, have all been patterned and fiddled with or had adjustable combs installed to shoot where I want them to.

I could very well be wrong and apologize if I am. I think that a pattern plate can be a good tool if used well. You sound like the type of shooter that's not only made a study of shotgun shooting but also has the experience and training to be able to actually use a pattern plate well. Ben may well be relaying a good amount of what he's seen at clubs where shooters without a good amount of experience or the shooter that read/heard how "all serious shooters use a plate" and suddenly he/she is chasing something they don't have a decent grasp of. Just a thought.

Patterning matters for hunting loads. For clays it seems silly, but knowing how a specific load hits at what range is important when hunting geese, ducks, or pheasants.

I'm going to compare my 3 sports. Waterskiing, shooting, golf. The biggest struggle is I could do it when I was a kid because Dad liked the sports and paid to have his kids time occupied. Then in HS and at uni you had peers who did some access but from grad through marriage and kids you leave. It's expensive your time is valuable/demanded. Getting people in their 20s to remain involved is key. Big issues become costs when paying for school car house new in a career it's daunting. Building in formats where q round of clays doesn't cost half a day pay, where you can do a quick league night and grab a beer works for that age who then can afford a club membership once they age up in their career

In general I agree with what he’s saying but not about using a patterning plate for GUN FIT! Worthless for everything else but I’ve seen too many instances where four mount-shoot shot at a spot 16 yards from the shooter shows where the gun is impacting versus where the shooter is looking. Some simple stock adjustments and voila, the shotgun FITS!

There are great shots who are poor instructors or full of ego. There is also a difference between instructors and coaches. Similarly there is a pricing difference. Ben would be too expensive and probably not the best to get someone new shooting. However, if a serious competitor needs to be taken to the next level, someone like Ben has a place.

He's right about pattern plates and consistent breaks. New shooters, nearly 100% of the time, have little control over the gun as it becomes time to send it. This is true in every discipline but hardmount benchrest. A pattern plate is hardly a diagnostic activity and is misapplied. Consistency is key, and if you consistently miss with the same consistent strategy, that's scientific and diagnosable.

The main issue is to be good you have to shoot at least 100 birds once a week to enjoy it and improve. Other sports are are cheaper and more done more often like playing rugby 2/3 times a week. Gym the same. But to shoot you need money, more than averge joe if it was cheaper for cartridges and clays more would shoot. Buyinga gun is cheap enough though.
