This is another video from the Helsinki Knife Show 2019. It is an interview with J.P. Peltonen on his Military Puukko Designed knife. J.P. was kind enough to talk us through the knife and how it came about and some of the features that make it a perfect knife for the Finish Military and other forces around the world. J.P. has plenty of experience in knives and their use in the field, so making a knife to his own design was a natural evolution. Hope you enjoy the video and the great atmosphere at the Helsinki Knife show.

A very good knife. Health and long life to the Finnish inventor.

I bought the original model with the leather sheath when they first come out. I used to rotate several knives in my outdoor carry but now pretty much this is what is on my belt with the others being consigned to my backpack as a backup. It just works superbly and you can tell it was designed by a man who understands working tools.

@Benny Silin You watch too much KZfaq "marketing" videos on survival and bushcraft channels but you don't have any real experience, in the field, or even better experience, from a real soldier point of view. Marketing tricks, like knife batoning, have sold tons of knives, that eat dust, inside, many backyard Rambos, drawers. This knife son, is the real deal. Doesn't get any better than this. Kydex you mentioned, breaks in cold conditions for example, and becomes unsafe, in hot conditions. G10, is a very heavy material, that most of the times, not only adds unessesery weight, but it also destroes, the knifes balance. I could right for hours, but if you don't go out there to really use a tool, in real conditions, that it was designed for, you will never be able, to bypass, the brainwash, that KZfaq marketing, has done to peoples minds, and you will always beleivve, what the backyard Marketing Rambos said. I know, truth hurts, I've been there...stay safe son..
@greekveteran2715
@greekveteran2715 4 жыл бұрын
@Benny Silin I insist, its' all marketing. There are other polymers and plastics, that hold much better, on hursh weather conditions, than kydex does. That's the reason, standard editions on Ka-Bar and on this knife, don't come in kydex. How many soldiers, you saw carring a knife like that while serving? Are you kidding me? It's a store, that sells knives, to the new knife community, that KZfaq has created the later years and tha't... called marketing sir. I never saw a soldier, carring a knife on his belt with dangling system. Modern warfare, isn't a cowboy western hollywood movie. Just my opinion

@Benny Silin I'm really sorry, I apologise. But you know what? It's the era, where people hate the truth. all peoples minds are under control, The bait is the money and the trap is the banks. Their tools that created all this mess, is called TV Programming and nowdays internet. That's why all people hate each other, and there is only "ego" and no real love around. I know, that truth hurts, that's why I apologise.Have a nice day

Great knife, one of the nicest designs (puukko awesomeness) I've ever used and the 80CRV2 steel is just amazing (smooth like 1095 cro-mag but with better edge retention). I got the flat grind one (M07) and it's beyond sharp and easy to keep that way...I also love the fact that the tang is hidden inside the handle...rust is way less of a problem this way. The Teflon coating is slick and so far (in 3 years) hasn't worn off. Can compete with any carbon knife on the market. Period.

Definitely. The original model was actually a full flat at 5 mm thick and I think that when he moved production to Laurin Metalli and 4 mm thick 80CrV2 blade stock, he kept the same grind angle as that makes it a very good slicer - but the newer style blade now has a modest shoulder, making it a sabre grind, or 'high flat with secondary bevel'. It cuts very well and chops above its weight, too. (I have the M07 short version, Mk2, by the way, with a leather sheath as the hard plastic one is only available for the longer 150 mm M95 model; I have always wondered why there is no short version of the plastic sheath, which seems to me to be the better one).

Did J-P Peltonen change the name? This has always been sold under the name "M95 Sissipuukko" or as "M95 Ranger Knife" which is the literal translation of the former.

I had the original knife, made from a bayonet blank. Very dodgy handle, the locking mechamism was not machined, it was just a huge lump of steel sticking through the rubber material. Still, had to have it, because the M62 bayonets for the Valmet/Sako rifle are totally unobtainable.
@max_ljv
@max_ljv Жыл бұрын
You can find M62 bayonets in auctions from time to time, in the range of 150€ to 250€. Bayonets were illegal for general sale in FI until 2003, so the only available domestic copies were the ones given as military course memorabilia in the 1970s. They appear steadily into auctions as that generation's possessions start to circulate. But the original Peltonen made from the bayonet blanks is absolutely unobtainable; I have never seen one except the one I have. Luckily I bought mine from J-P himself at a weapons fair in the 90's :D so I have the whole range from M62 to M95-2015. Of all of them, the original bayonet blank version is the most beautiful blade to my eyes, but I can't bring myself to using it for anything. Too much of a treasure. (The handle is dangerous for any utility use, but you could pop it off and put your own in its place for utility work ;) )

Are you required to have a license in the UK to sell the odd knife made from a home workshop and which is really just a hobby, no plans to start selling knives but now and again I'm asked, as of now I've made them as gifts for friends who are senior of age who follow the pursuit of deer hunting, not to anyone under the age of 18, I have been asked by a friend to make a skinning knife for a hunting friend of his who would be prepared to pay for the commission, I can see clearly that if you are a shop owner you need a license but what about this kind of situation? Any help or advice would be very much appreciated as finding any information online for this kind of situation has proved to be difficult. Followed you for a long time and love your work.
