it's a LOT of work and time to get access to a firearm in Canada. I went through the process right before they banned handguns altogether and was pleasantly surprised how many rules and hurdles I had to go through.

Yep, I have been talking about this for a while, and am a gun owner in favor of more/better gun control. If someone wants a gun, especially one designed for killing humans or war, they should have their mental health evaluated first. I'm not getting into the need/want/culture discussion, that is a whole other bag of worms.

Because those other countries are different down to the person. Everyone keeps thinking they are all the same but they aren't. Plus some of those countries are not a good role model to go off of take japan for example where you can't have something as simple as a bow without getting in legal trouble or Australia in banning anything resembling a firearm including gel blasters and airsoft guns just because they claim you can make a functional gun out of the frame which is partially true but ultimately folds in on itself due to the amount of effort required to reshape the internals of airsoft or gel blasters. To put it short Australia banned them on the possibility which is insane. Plus your forgetting history, some of those places before banning already had gun violence down. The us was a place that had gun violence lower, only during the 70s and 80s did it rise and if you look into what was going on during that time you can see a trend, especially when it came to Vietnam, politic changes, the failed war on drugs, organized crime, law enforcement structure and how society worked at the time. If our grandfathers could buy NEW machineguns, have guns ordered to their doors and not have to worry about getting shot, when they could openly have shotguns or even the stories you hear of kids legitimately bringing guns to school so they can go to the local range afterwards to go plinking without any shootings. If they could manage why can't we? Clearly something happened with us, getting rid of limiting them won't help 90s was proof that it didn't help or get any worst. If you really want change go after the people and the way society is structured down to the family and individual. Really look at how society, especially in the us, is structured nowadays. How do we treat each other, family, friends, neighbors and strangers. You start to see some red flags and understand why its such hard times for everyone
