As a sixers fan, this hurts but it also feels great for Ben Simmons’ cowardice to finally catch up with him. He always had everything handed to him, he never understood the city, he thinks all fans should simply love him without being critical of his aversion to shooting, something every 8 yr old does when they pick up a ball. And it’s been frustrating to hear Doc enable him publicly in interviews. And for as special as Embiid is, guards determine the end of games. And unfortunately, my team’s “guard” is the softest 6’10 athlete is modern sports.

But if he wants to be a dependable superstar, he better get his improving his FT shooting before next season and add a decent jumper. This reminds me of Dwight Howard’s lack of progression. Simmons, like Dwight was, is a spectacular player but he’s limited. Also like Dwight we’ve seen zero evidence that he’s training on something new and needed in his game. It’s actually sad that your maxed out, all-star pg is a liability in so many ways.

3:59 he's shouting out Justin Kutcher, Wiz play-by-play broadcaster. All Kutcher did call Simmons overrated March 13 during a regular season Wiz-76ers matchup. The context was that Kutcher calling attention to the Ben Simmons all star nod + Tobias Harris all star snub reality. Ben Simmons responded and the hate train rode Kutcher for a day or two. Btw all the same people who are now calling Simmons garbage (ahem Kendrick Perkins..). We still miss Steve Buckhantz down here in DC, but Kutcher is awesome and good on him for telling it like it is!! Nice attention to detail here on The Ringer :D

Ben Simmons is much more of a Andre Igoudala than a play making PG. He's great in the open court and swinging the ball, but you can't rely on him to run your offense. He was billed as the next Lebron, and somewhere along the way he started believing that. Giving him max money pretty much ensured that he won't improve his jumpshot, because it validated his own perception of him as a superstar. In several interviews he stated he doesn't need a jumpshot to be effective, that's true, but it essentially makes him a very good role player. You're getting pulled in crunch time cause the coach can't trust you? Not a superstar. Fact is, even Iggy made himself into a descent spot up shooter, Simmons really needs to do the same.

@@ollytropics1735 right, I'm sure you can cherry pick enough stats to prove that he's better than Michael Jordan, but if you watch actual games, his weaknesses on the offensive end are glaring. This is not up for debate, everyone is aware of this.

@@ollytropics1735 are you saying he's a good playmaker then? Because his career low in assists this year and the fact that philly took the the 5th least amount of 3s in the nba should give you an idea how little actual value that cherry picked stat has. Whatever system plays they run that generate these semi contested threes are no where near as reliable or valuable as when they run their offense through embid or even harris' isos...

One of the few exceptions to this rule is d Wade and Bron but neither of these players are on that caliber. If the team gets shooters and moves Embiid they will be better for it

He needs to go to a team with a great point guard and be an off ball player that cuts and drives and can be the secondary ball handler. Put him at PF and have a guard that shoots a lot like Dame or Steph that can help push him be a better jump/FT shooter
@jambononi
@jambononi 3 жыл бұрын
Totally agree! Even Embid fumbled the ball at the end and looked all lost and confused. Ben Simmons was given huge contracts for his potential, the whole “if he gets a jump shot” thing. But the rest of the team were also lacking a certain bite needed to win. Trey Young was in predator mode. He decided to win. I’ve seen the same with Luka, Durant, Kawhi, and especially Draymond, where you see a switch go off and they decide to win. Embiid doesn’t seem to have that as far as I’ve seen. Nor does Giannis. I think there’s a lot of talent in these guys but the psycho thing that Jordan and Kobe are famous for isn’t in everyone. I think a well constructed team needs to be paired with a psycho level of “I will win now” mentality. Butler did it last year as well, obviously couldn’t win the whole thing but beat better teams through sheer force of will

I think this is the first playoff series in recent memory that literally killed a person's trade value, while exposing them as yet another top prospect who came out way too soon, never got better and has plateaued as a result to the detriment of his team as a whole. When I saw Ben in LSU, a major red flag for me was the whole 'he's a guard who can't shoot' thing. What? That's like a forward who doesn't rebound or center who doesn't block shots. So while he's really good defending and distributing, his inability to shoot makes him a major liability. Then we learn he can't shoot FTs when it matters most, meaning teams can employ Hack-A-Ben to slow the game down to a crawl late. Which the Hawks did to get back into games in the series. To only take 5 shots total across 7 games in the 4th quarter, that's the sort of thing you're okay with if we're talking about a role player or someone getting limited minutes. When you're the #1 overall pick, someone who's seen as the #2 to Embiid's #1...that's unacceptable in every possible way. I genuinely don't know how Philly can or should expect to get top dollar for Ben after this series. I wouldn't feel comfortable trading for Ben, cause a lot of what he doesn't do, is stuff that by now he should either be doing or been working on. He's done in Philly, that much is certain.

If Ben started shooting free throws like Rick Barry everything would be fine. For some reason people like Drummond, Simmons etc think being targeted and benched in big games is less embarrassing than a certain free throw mechanic? What's that about? Rick Barry has one of the highest free throw % in history when using his unique technique
