For people wondering, this is a maiko which is like an apprentice geisha. It’s really easy to see the difference when you look for it. Maiko are more ornamental than geisha, they have more hair accessories, called kanzashi, and patterns on their kimono. Under her kimono collar you can see red which is on her juban, a layer under kimono; geisha can wear about any other color juban. Her kimono appears to be a Hikizuri because of the length and the long tied obi called darari. Her makeup can also show you she’s a maiko because she will wear red lipstick only on the bottom of her lip. When most people imagine geisha, they are thinking of maiko!

@@eleven6483 yes that’s how you could describe them. Geisha translates like “person who does art/artist” because they know how to perform with singing, dancing, and playing instruments. They are skilled in the arts as well. :) I’m still learning about maiko (which can be translated as “dancing child”) but they will train for a while with multiple types of classes. They will also accompany geisha at work and learn from them. Historically maiko could even start training as children into their teen years; now maiko usually chose for them self as a teen or young adult.

That's part of her job and she knows it. She's trained to be fine with it. What tourists need NOT do is follow, touch, shout, chase or otherwise harass them. Quietly filming and snapping pictures is not only fine, it's a major reason this profession can still exist.

@@pinksalamanders It's actually prohibited by Kyoto city government to take pictures of them since this year and you will get fined if they catch you. Look it up.

@@midashq No actually you can not STOP them and ask to take pictures, as that is interrupting them in getting too their Banquets/events. Nothing wrong in any way in standing there and taking pictures, so long as you do not impede their movement.

I find it extremely disrespectful for tourists to aim their cameras aggressively at the maiko and gheiko when they are busy getting to the next appointments. And 0:03 why did the guy in gray shirt twist and turn his head like he was making fun of her?

Geisha /Maiko are a Kyoto treasure. The tourists need to stop ruining it. They already closed the private street/alleys due to dumb tourists harassing Maiko. Next they will have to transport them 100% in covered cars. Please have some common sense and act accordingly and do not ruin the great tradition of the Geisha. If you wantto properly take picture you should book a dinner or tea then you can meet one instead of just gawking like a wild animal.

Sorry but we Westerners are so fascinated and intrigued by geishas that we can't help but take videos and photos of them. In our culture this figure does not exist and for us seeing one live is beautiful. I also understand that they are annoyed by it because it happens every day. Probably if I were there I would take photos and videos too.

Please ask for permission first. Or if you really want photos of geisha, pay for an actual geisha show. Out on the street, they're likely just trying to get home after work
