Over 25 new Benchmades in the last 3 years and have had no issues at all. Bought a couple second hand off the BF Exchange. Sent them in for service and got amazing results from them.

its a blade choice for sharpening but its high on the blade compared to the grind since they want you to be able to choke up so the edge isnt by your finger...I do agree it looks a bit high

@E1337N3SS 6 жыл бұрын
I just don't get why they put it there when they had room for it right behind it in the plunge grind that wouldn't have been useful edge anyway. I'd atleast want them to extent the forward choil out to the edge if they're going to waste that space. Bitching aside, 20cv is by far my favorite blade steel. Had quite a few blades in that and m390, and I'd take it any day over S30/90v. It just keeps going no matter what you throw at it!
@brandont9071

Pasquale might be because of The blade stops. They might've wanted the cut out to be farther forward because potentially the blade stops could get in the way of a consistent angle sharpening stone like an edge pro, and if they put the cut out closer in line with the blade stops maybe they thought that it wasnt as useful as a sharpening choil since the stops would get in the way. Idk... It looks really weird tho

I edc the 940-1 with the carbon fiber and s90V steel. I found the pivot screw wanted to loosen; it was either way too tight and the action wasn't free, or it was too loose and would want to loosen more. I wondered if it was the shortness of the pivot screw, or just tolerances. I used a tiny bit of loctite, set the pivot to smooth action but no bladeplay, and haven't had any problems since. I love it and see why many say it's the perfect edc knife. It carries comfortably, is slim, strong, sharp, and lightweight in the pocket! : ) I also got to handle a Proxy once. I liked it. Rest In Peace Warren Osborne, you had many amazing knife designs. Keep up the great work, Jeff! Long time viewer : )

I have this model and I like it and did a video on it recommending it but I may need to do a new video after some more use that I've done with it. The frame lock cut out is very sharp when gripping tight.

In the last couple years, I've purchased 5 different 940s. I purchased one 940-1, where the blade wasn't centered, so I returned it. The next copy wasn't so bad, so I kept it. After using the S90v steel for a bit, I didn't like how difficult it was to get a polished edge, so I sold it and got the knifeworks exclusive 20cv version with blue/black g-10 scales. Again, the blade was so off center, it was rubbing the scale near the center of the spine, so I returned it. My second copy wasn't so bad. Finally, when I discovered the goinggear exclusive, I had to have that version. It was fine. The centering wasn't perfect, but it wasn't rubbing, so I've kept it. That has been my experience with their quality control in the last two years.

s90v doesnt get polished edges, thats from there datasheet too. a few other steel types exhibit that. you can polish the edge, but it takes a while and you have to use the correct abrasives. s90v with a great working edge works really really well. tho the blade style of the 940-1 is not great for slicing, so it doesnt lend itself well to that design with the steel imho. it can be a little bit chippy. i do appreciate actually cutting stuff and EDC cutting with the 940-1. but when i have alot of stuff to slice up, i use spyderco's. the blade geometry just slices with little effort since less blade stock is behind the edge to slow the cutting down from friction like the 940-1 stout blade design. anyways, i too had issues with not centered 940-1. you can center a benchmade tho. here you go www.bladeforums.com/threads/centering-a-benchmade-blade.1495117/ i had some other benchmades that have lopsided blade grinds (that i since sharpened and took forever since they messed it up so bad). torx bits off center of screws. scales not flush or even uniform from side to side. and one of the worst offenders is side to side and or up and down blade play. and if you were to get one without it wouldnt flick open or closed very well. they also have major tolerance issues on some models. i see models i want but cant really get past the problems.
@paulyoshida1747

Regarding the sharpenability of s90v, I experimented with quite a number of sharpening mediums. I used some diamond stone progressions leading to 0.1 micron abrasives on strops. I could eventually get a polished edge, but it was just too much work. I tried settling for a rougher edge, but it just wasn't what I prefer in my EDC blade. Partly, I use my pocket knives for somewhat unusual things like shaving the edge of my beards, and I've not had any problems with s30v, s35vn, 20cv, etc. I'm not really doing a lot of food prep, since I have plenty of dedicated knives for that purpose. I do agree that spyderco knives tend to be better slicers. I also tend to prefer their heat treatment. I like their s30v better, for instance, in the paramilitary. Benchmade's s30v seems a bit harder to grind/sharpen/polish, and it also doesn't seem to bite as much. And, oddly, in my experience, I feel the need to resharpen it somewhat more regularly... Anyway...I am aware of the methods to adjust the centering. However, as you mentioned, it doesn't work when the issue is related to the grind of the blade. When the blade grind itself of lopsided... well...you just need to send it back. Personally, I've seen it 4 different times now. On two 940s, one paramilitary, and one mini-grip. I'm also rarely happy with the edge grind. It's always ground too deep at the hilt end, and the angle toward the tip is weird. They need to re-train their sharpening staff. When I can do a better job free handed, that's a little sad. But, I am willing to work with that. I almost always grind in a shallower primary edge anyway. It's just annoying. I still like the design of several models, so when I purchase one, I just accept that it may need to be returned. I've not tried this yet, but I'm sure if you sent it back to benchmade, they would take care of you. I've had great experience with their customer service. However, it is possible that they are not as strict with their quality control because they offer such stellar customer service. It shouldn't be that way...but, oh, well.

The reason for the $306 magic number is that Benchmade requires dealers to maintain its minimum advertised price of 85% of MSRP. $360 x 85% = $306.

Ian S. Well atleast they put it past the plunge grind. So technically they did put it in the correct spot so the ricasso can serve its purpose, which is more than I can say about other knife companies *cough* Cold Steel *cough*. But maybe they should've looked into changing the angle of the plunge grind.

I've never had a knife with 20cv but if it really is the same as 390 then it is an amazing steel. I have a Benchmade Contigo w 390 and it is hands down the best steel I've carried ever. It gets a hair popping edge with little effort and holds it pretty well. When it does dull just hit it up on a strop and the edge is back with a vengeance.

I have two mini grips in 20CV. One is a custom mini grip I ordered off benchmades site and the other is the grey and blue g10 model. This is my favorite steel. I accidently smacked the grey g10 model on one of my stainless steel coffee mugs when I was mindlessly playing with the axis lock. It put a noticable roll in the edge and I prepared to spend a good 30 to 40 minutes to sharpen it out. I have a delica in zdp 189 and it took about that long to sharpen it so I figured id buckle down and just do it. But it literally only took 5 minutes of sharpening to get the roll out and put a razor sharp edge on. It was pretty amazing. 20cv is supposed to have 30% more wear resistance than s30v. My benchmade proper in s30v took longer to sharpen than my minigrips in 20cv. They are worth every penny imo when considering they have good rust resistance too.

I picked up a Proxy locally (Wichita Kansas) brand new for $212. At that price, I couldn't pass it up. I absolutely love the knife and CPM20CV. It takes a great edge and holds its sharpness. The price may be high for some, but the premium materials on this knife are worth it. I don't think Jeff mentioned the blade thickness but the spine of this blade is massive, so you're getting a big chunk of 20CV. I've always been drawn to Warren Osborne designs and this is the last knife he designed for Benchmade unfortunately.

I only own 2 benchmade brand knives{ 755 MPR, 940-1} I own one HK made by bechmade I will say they are a bit high priced for what you get most times . But the build quality on the ones I have has been top notch the blade grinds being off is not that big a deal to me cause I am a edge freak I put all my knives with in the first week on my edge pro and re-profile them to a 15dps and polish them to high mirror edge in the process I also back the edge grind up just a bit

20cv is probably my favorite steel, I actually like it over m390. They aren’t exactly the same steels, I find the 20cv sharpens a little easier then m390. I carry a Ferrum forge stinger xl in 20cv archbishop and the list can go on and on for a long time. Cool fact about 20 cv over m390 Is when it’s a it’s max hardness or 64 hrc I believe, it has the highest edge retention and maximum toughness and impact resistance. Most steels don’t do that. Most steels the higher harness and edge retention the less tuff they are.

I've carried a mini grip for about 8 months now and I do believe it was a little over priced. I am not at all that hard on my knives and it has developed some blade play. If I adjust the pivot screw I can eliminate the play but it's really hard to open the knife one handed. I feel like the finish on the blade is kind of crappy as well the spine is kind of sharp and should have been deburred better. My Delca wave was about 20 bucks cheaper and has a lot more use and there is no blade play and the overall fit and finish is better.

I have had good luck with my Benchmade knives and I had great luck with there mini grips, and have given them to several people. The only issue I have seen with the mini grip 154CM same as AST-34 steel. the blade accidentally dropped the knife the blade broke. That is what happened to one I gave my friend I told him to send it back to Benchmade and they would replace the blade for a cost. I don't have any knives with the 20CV steel in it currently so I can't say how it compares to other knives for performance. Jeff the question to you is since you said it was like s30V steel does it have a tendency to chip like that steel?
@cutlerylover
@cutlerylover 6 жыл бұрын
not from my experience but any chipping issues I have ever had ever have been from hitting staples in boxes or other metals like cutting tin cans, I can only remember one time in my life that I had a blade chip from cutting wood when it hit a knot in a branch...under normal usage blades dont chip often at all

looks like a great knife tbo. i would think this would be a great knife with thumb studs instead of the flipper, kinda wishing they would have made those as thumb studs instead of blade stops. but it looks great. ill have to find somewhere that has one to handle and see if i really like it enough to get one. i don't like the poor qc benchmade are known for. because of the the high cost its a turn off when you dont get a good example. but it looks like the knife in this video doesn't have the major qc issues at all. nice! i have lots of experience with the benchmade poor quality. and if you check out bladeforums random people often have to send them in several times to get the same problem fixed, or a new problem after repaired the first time. to be fair they sell more knives than most of the other brands, but clearly dont have as good a qc as they should for the cost of the knives were getting. but again, its a gamble cause it doesnt happen to everyone. its fortunate that you can goto many stores that carry knives and pick through the boxes for a good one. some online vendors will inspect them if you ask and they know what to look for (lots of stores are knife noobs just selling and not caring about the products. which reminds me dont buy on ebay or amazon. people buy the real thing then send it back with a clone. then the next person gets the clone. 20cv, m390 and 204p are very close in composition but differ slightly because they cannot copy and sell the same exact thing due to patents. anyway they are essentially the same. the slight variations DO indeed change some properties. not only that, they are also made differently too. they suggest 20cv is using an older generation but use another process to make it more clean. cleaner is better. how much better really depends and might vary only slightly but even could drastically, depending on the HT. in the end the difference between them all depends on the heat treatment. i believe they are using a better heat treatment on the 20cv cause they seem to cut longer. in my experience and others talking about it. all three of the variations are probably 3 or 4 times more the edge retention that s30v has depending on the brand and how they do their heat treatments. all three , like you said, are relatively easy to sharpen with the right abrasives. really easy to touch up on a diamond or SiC strops too.

goto a store that sells knives and handle the benchmade that they want to sell you. if that one doesnt look good to you, ask to see a couple more, that the quality is poor on that one. you should look for uneven or lopsided blade grinds, action that works open and close. all the hardware looks correct and even centered. avoid darker color blade color on the sharpened edge (burnt edges from the factory sharpening is bad news for the heat treatment). and then check for side to side and up and down blade play. then last check that both sides of the scales look about the same. some will use wildly different scales and it looks like poo. very few vendors will inspect them when you buy online. but some of them will. USA Made Blades and DLT trading, are two i know off the top of my head that will inspect them.

Hey guys thanks for the advice. I live in the Republic and our blade laws are ridiculous (only a friction folder/fixed under 2.5" nothing else is legal ) and even at that police over here would swear I'm carrying a machete when they see a knife. Unfortunately there are no outdoor shops that stock benchmades,ZTs, microtechs etc over here. I tried buying from a private seller in America before but I got screwed so I really don't trust things like that. I've only found perry knife works and knife works so far are the only 2 online that will ship a benchmade outside the US.

Collecting knifes in Ireland is costly... The 940 I desire is $190 or 200 depending on if it's a exclusive, then I've to pay on average around 35 - 40 for shipping then another say 50 for my ridiculous customs charges so 9 times out of 10 I'm like 300 or more into a 200 or less knife. My cyro cost me €100 or about $110 and that's for a kershaw 😂😂

Me too. With larger fixed blades I can see a price over 100 $, but 300... would not use it, would spent that money on other things, honestly. Just for the name I do not pay that amount of money.

Great review. Sorry you cut yourself. Made me feel a less clumsy about myself because I cut myself on a regular basis a collection of Zero Tolerance knives I quickly and obsessively snapped up. I got one particularly nasty cut from the Ka-Bar / Becker Your review was more about this particular Benchmade model rather than the CPM-20CV itself. Still, I liked your review. Definitely a cool knife though I'd prefer a blade maybe 0.185" thick rather than 0.150". Thank you for uploading this video.

20cv is not the same as m390. M390 and cts204p are the same and 20cv is close to the same.
@cutlerylover
@cutlerylover 2 жыл бұрын
The only difference between the two steels is the silicon content (CPM-20CV: 0.03%; M-390: 0.07%) Your average user wont be able to tell the difference in performance unless they do literally side by side cutting testing with very similar blade profiles and grinds...

That sharpening choil is gigantic and the knife itself looks very dull in every way. Wow, titanium frame lock with flipper. That's really fresh. The 940 series is legendary, this? It looks like all the price is from the supersteel and 300 dollars is way too much. I don't want to be hard on Benchmade, I love them, but their quality has been dipping lately while the price has been rising and their knives get less and less innovative, and it's discouraging.

Patented Benchmade Big Black Boner clip. Does look like a very compelling EDC knife however, but I'm just not sure I can drop $306 on a titanium framelock flipper even in CPM-20CV. The Steel Will Cutjack in M390 is $40 If Benchmade could roll that price back (not saying it's terribly unreasonable) about $100 then I'd be more interested

That sharpening choil is such a lame ass afterthought. Doesn't jive with the design at all, totally just an "oh shit" moment where they don't want reviewers complaining about the thumb stud being in the way of sharpening so they threw that stupid radius in the blade to pacify. Totally unacceptable and makes me want 3 hands to give 3 hands down because you can tell this design wasn't anything inspired or unique even from the very start. Sad because a Mel Pardue Griptilian was my first good knife and I loved it. But this seems like a pig with lipstick, if even that.

I know I’m late but I’m so sick and tired of Benchmade! They are average designs that you could get from Crkt for 30 bucks. There quality control is absolutely awful!!!! Sanrenmu has better quality control than Bm!!! And they are the most overpriced bs I’ve ever seen! They have got to step it up!

Death By Astonishment Folders are great for a while, but there is too many parts to be sturdy consistently. Folders are great for edc, but theyre a lot of up-keep and can't handle a lot of abuse, you really have to pay a premium to get a good folding knife.

To me NOTHING about this knife is worth 300 dollars. If your paying 300 dollars for a knife i better get a coll package and some goodies inside the package. I got more value in my 40 dollar Boker Kalashikov knife. Worth 250 max.

b33lze6u6 I own a couple. It depends on the knife. I think the quality is worth it on MOST of their knives. There's a few they aren't worth paying for. Like the Anthem, 87, ti monolock are knives to stay away from in my opinion. The ones that are definitely worth the price: the Loco series, Barrage series, the 55X-1 griptillians, 940, the Proper series, the Bugout, and most others. Just really know your stuff about knives, like steel types, and you'll never overpay. Another company I suggest is Zero Tolerance. Trust me, the price is worth it.

Ian S. I appreciate the well thought out reply. I collect knives as a hobby and have almost pulled the trigger on a benchmade more than a few times. I own a few high dollar knives it just seems with benchmade i could get somthing else i have my eye on with comparable features for less instead. That being said theres no doubt ill end up owning a benchmade at some point. Maybe once its in my hand my mind will change
