This video introduces a new for my channel test: Accelerated Corrosion. This test procedure follows the general guidelines of ASTM B117 standard. The purpose is to show which knives perform as advertised in high humidity conditions and which fall short of the hype.

We’ll get to the bottom of all this together! Ask questions and give me new ideas, I’m listening!

Pretty ironic that a Golden Colorado Spyderco performs better in salt than an Oregon City Oregon Benchmade. Apparently the guys at Benchmade dont get to the coast enough for real world testing. As a life long Oregonian and former employee of Benchmade im disappointed by a lot of what they put out these days.

I think that the reason why Adira's blade rusted is that Benchmade has chosen an inappropriate finish for the blades that are supposed to be used in or near salt water - they have stonewashed them. If I'm not mistaken, stone washing creates scratches on the blade where salt water can accumulate and create rust spots.

I can confirm that a native salt (mine in LC200) can be left on a boat and forgotten about for 5 months and it may have a few little spots but they rub right off. Best saltwater knives ever. Had one in a wade bag too and it’s like it was when it came out of the box.

You have me wondering if a higher hrc is responsible for the spydercos superior resistance to rust over the Benchmade and mkm magnacut. Spyderco has a reputation for optimal heat treat while Benchmade has a reputation of running soft.

Amazing video. My concern about Magnacut knives is not the blade itself. What happens with inside parts?. Spring, bearings, spacers, etc. Those parts are harder to clean and maybe those are not rust resistant. I suppose you already made the autopsy of the 4 knives and you will show the results very soon

Idc about hardness tests... I've been skeptical of bm's care for heat treating/tempering and post ht grinding. Multiple of their knives ive purchased have taken shitty edges, on the same equipment I'm getting amazing edges on Spydercos and cold steels. This just furthers my suspicion. Someone once said theyre likely tempering at really high temps to make the blades less likely to burn off too much hardness on the belts during sharpening.. and high-temp tempers rob a steel of the properties it's meant to exhibit. I'm no chemist or metallurgist, but from what I do know, it kinda makes sense.
