To be fair, labor rates in the US are easily 10X that of China or Taiwan, so there's one big reason. Also the counterfeiters didn't pay for research and development, they just copied an original. The fact people support this is kinda sad. I suppose the same people that would buy stolen goods if the price is low enough. No morality.

I purchased 2 bugouts recently knowing full well they can't be the real deal. Like you explain, its tough to tell and the biggest attention grabber is the packaging. Im not worried about the authenticity as one has been engraved to go in my shadow box opposite a Griptillian and the other I wanted for my pocket knife. Knowing what I would be getting, I am not disappointed in the least with the fit n finish. I also ordered a fixed blade just to see. It was displayed as a Benchmade. What I received looks like a $5 flea market knife that I would pass over. Its not even close to the one pictured in the ad. Good video. Thanks for the info.

I've purchased Wish Benchmade knives just to test out the knife before I spent the money on the real thing. I'm a very tactile person and want to spend some time feeling and playing with things before I buy the expensive one. I'm glad I did, I was really torn between the bugout and the 940 and so I bought one of each and carried each one for about a month and decided I preferred the 940! I knew when I bought them they were fake, but they are VERY realistic and helped me make the decision!

I have 11 real Benchmade Bugouts and my nephew had a clone 535 that lost a screw so he gave it to me to fix. I ordered a new screw set for it but noticed that the scales were just a little off, So I ordered some new scales in G10. Then while taking it apart found that it had plastic washers, so I purchased some Phosphorous Bronze Washers. And then I noticed the rust on the blade, springs and liner, it was inside the scales and you couldn’t see it until the knife was apart. I also purchased a tool to help with reassembly. So I ordered a new set of springs too, the rest of the rust I just cleaned as best I could. On reassembling I found out that the scales were not exactly the same so some modification (drilling and cutting and a bit of dremal work) was needed, also the new screw set didn’t all fit, so I had to use a combination of new and old screws. Once together it looks good, function is okay, but not on the same level as any Benchmade. The steel, once sharpened, was pretty good. Overall, I took a POS knife and made a nicer POS knife, and ended up spending more than a new real Benchmade Bugout, so I kept the project knife an bought him a brand new Benchmade Bugout, and he’s really happy with it.

Here is my thought. First and foremost lets get the cosmetics off the table. If you are buying a knife, no matter what brand it is, it has to be a knife that you can depend on. It has to perform to the tasks you are carrying the knife for. Opening boxes/packages, paring fruit, cutting cordage, etc. Benchmade products boast quality and with that quality comes a level of safety. Will the blade locking mechanism fail and cut your fingers off? Will the fake one break if used harsh where as to the real one will survive? These are the things that should be compared. If the fake one performs just as good as the real one, then Benchmade is the criminal and has no honor. Benchmade Bugout is supposed to start at $114. It is also supposed to be one of their least expensive knives. Yet, everywhere I go, I see it no less than $140. I understand about supply and demand but that should not be a reason to over charge people for an item. The retailer and the manufacturers at that point become criminals themselves. Benchmade makes each knife at a certain cost and sells them to make a profit, if they go beyond that formula, they are without integrity. $27 vs $140? The $140 knife better cut through other steel. ijs.
@garycasteel4961
@garycasteel4961 Жыл бұрын
The Benchmade website lists the retail price of the standard Bugout at $160. Even if the retail price was $115, why is it “criminal” to sell it for more if that is what the market will bear? No one if forcing anyone to buy this knife.
@GlockNinja
@GlockNinja Жыл бұрын
@@garycasteel4961 "Nobody is forcing people to buy it" is a cop out to lowering one's morals. It plays on the ignorant and stupid. A person who lnows nothing about knives will buy a $160 knife thats not even worth $20 to manufacture and is not worth more than $80 retail and think they are buying the best knife because it is $160. That's ignorance. A person who supposedly knows a lot about knives buys $160 knife knowing that the knife is really not worth that much is called stupid. Just because of free market and capitalism, we don't have to pretend its okay to be stupid and ignorant as consumers.

I'm SUPER new to the pocket knife EDC fandom. All my other knives are under 20 bucks a piece. Thought about getting an actual good one when I saw the Bugout until I saw the price. Easily over 150 dollars for that thing. And EVERYONE complains about the scales & usually buys aftermarket titanium ones. I'm sure the machining and quality of the blade itself is top notch, but I'm not a fan of the Grivory. I'd LIKE to support Benchmade, but I just don't think the Bugout is worth that much. I have my favorite EDC with me at all times, almost the exact same size as the Bugout mini and it was legit 8 dollars. Honestly, if the scales on the mini were made of some type of metal, I'd pay MAXIMUM of 50 for it. But we're talking an additional 110 for the authentic version, AND I'd have to get aftermarket scales, costing me around another 60-80+ dollars. So now we're at over 252 bucks for a supped up authentic Bugout mini. I don't care about authenticity. To me, it's only bragging rights. The Bootleg Fakeout is 25 bucks, and if I got aftermarket scales, and hardware, it's still less than the authentic standard version AND it'd be stronger. So why go for the authentic one when I can get the Bootleg and a stronger construction for less money?

Well one thing is they stand behind their product for life, if it needs sharpening, taken apart cleaned and lubricated or if something is broke and needs repaired, then it's covered just send it to them and you'll get it back in about two weeks.
@SirWalterSansRien
@SirWalterSansRien Жыл бұрын
the entire design philosophy of the Bugout is that it's light. it's an exercise in functional minimalism. you get just enough knife in a very thin and ridiculously light package, with a strong lock and great action. you are primarily paying for the good steel and the good warranty. there is nothing actually wrong with grivory; some "knife guys" are just obsessed with appearance so they often replace the scales because they want the knife to look/feel a certain way, but that's contrary to the actual purpose of the knife. Benchmade knives are tools. if you actually use your knife for substantial work then you will notice the difference between a real one and a clone. if your knife is just a prop for social clout or a fidget toy for your desk, then yeah, absolutely get the clone.

@EDCandLace 3 жыл бұрын
It is not S30V, the steel tests as 440HC and comes in at 58HRC. The heat treat on the 3 I tested was all good. The one thing that I did notice on 2 of the knifes was a SLIGHT and I mean slight curved blade (wrapping from the heat treat) I used my tormek T8 and at first put a 16 degree per side edge and it failed the steel wouldn't hold a 16 degree edge so I took it to 19 and it held the edge excellent, then ran them over a strop progression starting at 3 micron diamond suspension spray then 2 micron then 1 micron then a half micron then 0.1 micron. The bend is so slight on both or then that I didn't see it while looking the knifes over but rather after the sharpening when I noticed the bevel in the center of the blade was ever so slightly smaller on one side and larger on the other for about half an inch in the center of the blades.. I knew it wasn't the sharpener and the 3rd one was perfect and I knew it wasn't me so I really started inspecting the blades up close and after a few mins I laid one on a piece or glass and tried to rock it and sure enough there was a Itty bitty amount of rocking so I knew the blade was not dead straight. I then sharpened one of the slightly bend ones on my TSPROF K03 to see if it was enough bend for a high precision sharpener but not as high precision as the T8 would cause the same thing and sure enough it did. It's not enough to bother you because you won't see it as it's so little but where it will mess you up is in sharpening as that slight bend will show up in your bevel if you use a high end locked angle sharpener such as a wicked edge, Tormek, KME and so on. It's not enough to show up on lower end fixed angle sharpeners like a Ruixin Pro or a Lansky. The steel is as good as it gets for 440HC as the heat treat is good. I would say it preforms about as good as VG10, and notably better then 8cr with a good heat treat. With a good 19 to 22 degree per side edge and stropped down to no more then 1 micron (as I learned the edge can't handle 0.1 micron strop and will roll) it preformed best with a 19 degree edge and stropped 3 micron diamond, 2 then 1 micron on Kangaroo tail leather (very hard) and the edge retention is about what you get from a good VG10... 440 that's got a good heat treatment on it and the right edge is a decent steel. A lot of people act like oh its 440 so it's shit... And that's simply not true, a quality 440hc heat treat will beat out a lot or better steels that have a half ass heat treat easily... Another thing about 440hc is that it's very easy to get a hair whittling edge on it and you don't need anything more then a 600/1000 grit whetstone and a strop. It's not a steel I would EDC but it is a good steel none the less and I will say that at 20 bucks that BM knockoff is a superb knife.. Not comparing it to the real thing just simply saying for 20 dollars it's a hell of a knife.

I got one too - the version with the gold aluminium scales (no flex). I think you're a bit uncomfortable with the fact that it's clearly a counterfeit, and to be honest so am I. Folks can attempt to justify their purchase by complaining about the price of the original but that's irrelevant - two wrongs don't make a right! I also have the 'clone' of the Benchmade Proper 319, and that's quite excellent. I've removed the Benchmade logos from both knives and destroyed the boxes, but I'm still not proud of what I've done. People say there's no way that the steel is actual S30V, and I'd like to know what it is, because it seems like a very good steel to me (my blade came with a stonewashed finish). I'm not convinced it isn't S30V - the enormous price difference between Western and Chinese products isn't primarily due to material costs, it's almost entirely down to employment costs - and not having to pay for R & D when you're stealing (sorry, copying) someone else's design!

@TheBootyWrangler
@TheBootyWrangler 2 жыл бұрын
The steel barely adds any cost at all. American made knives are so expensive because you’re paying for the labor and the process. Chinese factory manufacturing processes are MILES ahead of the manufacturing processes used here in the states. They use factory machinery to make working the expensive steels MUCH easier. Add in the .50¢/day salary of the employee making your clone and you have your cost savings right there all in one package. You should look into how much such a small amount of steel costs. Using a premium alloy adds negligible difference to price when you’re only talking a few ounces of steel
@mikeblack6953
@mikeblack6953 Жыл бұрын
The blade is the main pillar when purchasing a high quality knife. Chinese forge certificates can't be trusted. High quality US/other blades makers buy their steel from small trusted forges with trusted certificates to contain the exact alloys called for. Regardless of the cert, a quality blade maker will do spot check hardness tests and document, that’s part of what you’re paying for. Also, the steel liners, scales, other pieces on the quality knife all have certain specs from original R&D design that is being adhered too. Any Chinese product can be made much cheaper, even if they carried out quality steps, which they cannot easily do because they didn’t do the R&D (like all they copy), so you get what you pay for.

@renski8976 4 жыл бұрын
You know, I understand about the quality of the blade and the scales being different than the knock off one, but the price is still ridiculous. $120 vs $15-25 is no comparison. It's funny because most people that think about the costs of these blades don't think of the labor cost. I bet at least $50-80 of the genuine Benchmade Bugout goes to labor.
@mikeelek9713
@mikeelek9713 3 жыл бұрын
You're right about labor costs. The Chinese worker probably is making a couple of yuan per day. Maybe more, but not that much. Most people care only about price, which is obvious from the comments here.

@renski8976
@renski8976 3 жыл бұрын
@@shadowcastyt lol i have no idea where you got those numbers from. $10 a month? No one is that stupid to destroy a knife every month. I get it, if you beat your knifes the benchmade will last longer. It mostly depends on how you will use the knife. If you're just opening boxes and mail, cleaning your nails, or just light shit that can be solved with a few strokes on the leather, then I don't see the problem with the cheap knife. If you're going to work and using the knife for multiple different things that are harder on it, it makes sense. Lifetime sharpening is cool, but how many people are actually able to utilize that without encountering problems?

I have an authentic benchmade, and yes it’s worth every penny, I got it on sale for $120 when it’s originally $200. The “lifetime” sharp warranty, if that’s what you want to call it, is nice but if you spend that kinda money on a knife you damn sure ought to know how to sharpen a knife(that’s the way I look at it) Since my Benchmade Volli purchase, I’ve bought a few other knives, Kershaw is ehh, but Civivi has really impressed me and typically about half the price of Benchmade. The quality of the steel is typically what makes the price difference, while the D2 blade on my Civivi isn’t as extravagant as the S30v on my Benchmade, it’s every bit as sharp and I prefer carrying it since it’s lighter and not near as bulky. My point in all of this is that after learning how to sharpen my knives, all of them, some cheap and some expensive, they’re all the same sharpness give or take. Edge Retention is another animal, but with use all knives will eventually dull and the knives that hold on the longest will cost you the most. If you can’t afford an authentic, buy a knockoff. 95% of people will never be able to tell the difference, just make sure to learn how to properly sharpen your blades and how to take care of them and you’ll be golden. But don’t expect the quality of the knife to be the same because at that price difference it won’t be.

There are knockoffs of most Western products. The Chinese are great at copying - remember the Callaway golf club thing from the 1990s. This is nothing new. It's just made its way to the knife world, which is a lucrative market. It makes more sense to rip off someone else's design and sell 1,000 knockoffs at $15 each than spend money to design and make your own knife, which might not make enough to recoup your R&D costs.

The majority of used ones sold on ebay are fake. The easiest way to tell is the size of the copyright logo printed next to the butterfly logo on the knife blade. All the fakes I've seen have a larger copyright logo.... The authentic is very small, hard to see, but crisp under magnification. This can be seen in photos on the listing easier than other differences. Also look at the reviews, someone selling a used item shouldn't have sold reviews for the same exact knife multiple times, yet they do.
