Hello Sai - yes! You can do an open-coupling alignment using the built-in inclinometers. See this video for the instruction on how to do this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iLZ4gdV02NzPf2w.html

The 4 inches is the S-C distance, Stationary unit to center of coupling. The S-M distance is automatically halved to give the the S-C but you can override this if the center of the coupling distance is different.

Getting it under 20 thou is just a basic rule of thumb for setting the beams up but anywhere near 20 thou would be fine. All we are doing here is getting the lasers close to the center of each detector surface. The reason for this is so it can stay in each other detectors surface when you rotate the shaft 180 degrees. As soon as you take your first measurement it creates the references going to zero and measures from that first position. If there was a lot of misalignment, at a long distance out in the field, there is a chance the laser can come out of the detector surface if you don't get the lasers in the midst of the detector range (ie. the center). However, at this small distance, it wouldn't matter. It is good practice to get it close to zero if you can.

Hi Herbert74, thanks for your feedback! While the E540 is technically obsolete/discontinued, the E420 is still going strong as the software applies to both alignment tools. The video is also over 5 years old and still providing good training for our E420/E540 users!
