I think that's over-simplifying is the combination of thoughtful, controlled articulation techniques that the guitar masters have perfected. Slides, bends, vibrato, hammerons, pulloffs, grace notes, & mute strokes. All these things can't be rushed if you want to sound fluid and authoritative.

The more I play, the more I notice the tiniest little adjustments change everything. Musically, I'm a luddite - I don't chase new exotic scales and hot licks. I'm more concerned with the doing the most emotive things with the basics.

The tendonitis thing you mentioned is actually something I've experienced (mildly) and I'm pretty sure it's from bending the wrong way like you describe so well in this video. Good things man! I never thing there’s exactly a right/wrong thing with guitar techniques. If it sounds good, then it is good! But, if you don’t like the sound you’re getting, or it’s hurting you, yeah it’s a good idea to look into adjusting it!

I remember as a teen working on my bends and vibrato (and bends+vibrato) and I had this Andy Aledort instructional book with CD (yup, before KZfaq) which was great, except, he did most of the lessons in G (3rd position) which was not ideal for a beginner. Your lesson on the 9th fret is much more thoughtful. I'm gonna assume you did it intentionally cause you're a good teacher. Great lesson for new players and a good reminder for us 'experienced' players to keep working on these nuances. Thanks Eric!

Yeah 3rd position is a good spot the the reaches are kinda big! To me, nuances, articulations, and intentions will always win over shredding

I didn't have a teacher when I was a kid and learned only from magazines and watching MTV. My grandfather was a great player but mostly played bluegrass, early rock n' roll, and a little Texas swing, and he was such a natural player that he wasn't a very good teacher. Anyway, I got it in my head that bending up to a vibrato was done with the trem bar so that's what I used. It worked most of the time but was a terrible crutch, and it took a long time to get that straightened out. I'm still not happy with bending up and doing a vibrato all these years later, to be honest. It's like I have slumps, and I have to be warmed up to pull it off. Bending up and hitting the intended pitch is one of those things that separates a good player from a mediocre one, for sure. It takes a lot of practice when starting out.

That’s definitely a cool way to do it and I would never tell someone to not do something that sounds good - the ends justify the means! But yeah, for classic vibrato+bends I think it’s done with the wrist/forearm

@@EricHaugenGuitar I think I saw Gilmour doing it during a video of a live show when I was a kid, and some hair metal players, too, would do it as sort of an effect. Like kind of a wider, machine-like vibrato. You can make it sound more natural with a really light touch, particularly with a Strat, which was all I had back in those ancient times. It's weird how we get certain ideas in our heads when starting out. When I first started trying to do it the right way, it seems so impossible. I should have started earlier when everything seemed impossible.

Sure hope you’re safe as you said you went to Nashville and I saw the news today. Let us know you’re doing OK if you get a chance! As for this video it is a very cool video. The timing couldn’t have been better, because improving my vibrato and bending technique is first and foremost on my mind and in my practice sessions right now. Sadly I formed bad vibrato habits and you are right they are very difficult to break.

Hey Eric! Love your lessons! I’m at a point where I can follow you while I play. Great way of learning! So thanks! I was curious. Have you delved into Santana’s playing before? It would be cool to see a lesson focusing on his style of playing. I find him very melodic and really plays the song. Kind of like when you talk about chords. Where there’s a chord and time to dwell on a chord. He seems to take advantage of that and put interesting melodies on top. Anyways keep up the great GREAT work!!! 😊😊😊

Great lesson,that strat sounds incredible. I've always struggled with index finger vibrato doing it that way. I seem to find my wrist won't work with vibrato. Its seems OK with 3 fingers doing it that way. So I've ways done the Clapton 1 finger waggle way.

Yeah everyone’s a little bit different! There’s definitely not a one size fits all technical rulebook - we all work around our limitations! For me, I actually have very squishy/soft fingertips. It’s part of the reason I’m kinda slow - to make good contact with the fretboard I have to squeeze harder than someone with stiff fingertips!

BB King never held on to the neck with his vibrato, and he has quite possibly the best technique of any blues player. His vibrato was super tight and had very even oscillation flat and sharp. There is no "wrong" way. We all play differently based on hand shape and dexterity.

Eric, I have a question: what is the benefit of stopping a bend with your pick when you can lift your finger up at the end of the bend on your left hand? Hope that makes sense. Love the videos, keep it up.

I just compared the two - if you lift your finger, you'll always hear a little bit of the note falling down, which leads to that "dying cat" sound. By decisively stopping the string with the pick, you get a crisp, aggressive end. CHOP!

Eric, I’ve been working on bends and I’m struggling with the problem that you mentioned at about 9:45 in this video regarding sort of running into the string immediately above the bent string and getting that unwanted collided note when I bend upwards. You mentioned there were two solutions but I think you mentioned just one. Is there some other way to prevent that? It only happens when I bend upwards. Thanks!

Some string noise is ok - there's some great vids on Reverb's channel with Mike Campbell where he talks about it. Always fun to watch him. I just watched again I see what happened - I rambled about Tom pickups and then at about 12:00 I get to the other point. The fretting hand index finger is just touching the G string to stop it when it snaps off the bend.

Talk of some people don’t like strats..... I can never seem to get a tone I’m happy with on mine. On my blues JR no less. Actually I’m ok with the clean but I can’t seem to get a broken up tone that I like. So anyway I’m ordering a Dylan Talks Tone P90 that looks like a single coil. I’m just doing 1 for now. He suggested if I only pick one I do the bridge. Here’s hoping. Eric’s tone is fantastic here. Anyway wish me luck on the P90.

You can’t go wrong with any sort of p90! A good light overdrive goes a long way in getting the start to growl - as always, I love my strymon deco

I think that generally keeping both hands close to the instrument is essential. Just make sure nothing is stiff and tight - think cuddly, not mechanical, if that makes sense!

Pretty sure that’s the Walrus Monument. It’s a harmonic trem. It’ll split the signal and one half is going up while the other is going down. Kinda chewy.

That’s the walrus audio harmonic tremolo - very similar to a univibe, but just a little bit less warbly

It sure does! All types of string movement are useful - basically, anything we can do to make our guitar more vocal is a good idea :-)

Yeah! It's the Weber Mini Mass - a great little box that costs as much as a pedal and can tame any amp up to 50w! They're outta stock right now but I highly recommend anyone with a tube amp but some kind of attenuator!

Ah yes they call that the “rake” - definitely a classic blues move. I haven’t searched but I’m sure there’s vids about it!

@@EricHaugenGuitar Thanks!! I agree, and you might appreciate that I had it modded to replace the 5-way switch with a 3-way, and swapped push pots out for the tone knobs. I can play all 3 pups at once, or tweak the highs and mids real squonky 😁 I’m #31 on the list for my Phred Guitars “Liger”, hopefully with the MIDI added. Whoo.. can’t wait. 🎸🔥

Any tips on practicing keeping an accurate bend when adding vibrato at the top of the bend? Mine tends to fail out resulting in dying animal sound. Gets better if I really add pressure with thumb and that anchor knuckle. Is that the key - death grip or should I be practicing something else? Hendrix string set helped a bunch, but how would you practice building hand strength to keep that from fading flat? Would a Slow metronome and a tuner help?

Ok - I've got my strat in my lap as I type this: The fingers do move a little bit - it's sorta a compound motion where the wrist does most of the work, but the fingers have a tiny bit of wiggle to them also. Hrmmmm tricky to explain. Kinda like how a pitcher throws a knuckleball. They can do it, but if you ask them how, they can't explain it.

Medium! Sometimes students complain that their hands are too small, but I don’t think it matters as much as they say - the power comes from the forearm!

Very disappointed you never mentioned the key technique about bending even though it's clearly visible that you're using it. Facial expression is *key*. Each note you're bending to has a different facial expression associated with this, and will in fact vary depending on the speed of the bend. 4th to 5th slow bend? Happy expectation face. Slow bend to a blues note? Evil surprise. Getting these right is just as important as getting the right notes!

Bending and vibrato are deceptively difficult ... but if you get it, you don't have to play as many notes and that's when that sucker sings ... or wails ... or screams. Cheers.

Yes! Articulation always beats shredding, for me at least
