Beneath The Planet Of The Apes. If you were one of those people who saw the first film and wondered what was beneath the planet of the apes, the first one being set mostly on the surface, then this movie is for you. If you’re not one of those people, congratulations, there’s every chance you’re mentally stable.

Beneath is definitely the best sequel in the series. It moves along well and has plenty of good action scenes. I completely agree with you on escape, an absolutely ridiculous premise. Conquest and battle are almost like tv movies. I always watch the first 2 movies together.

I think the original film was amazing and had such an epic bad ass ending most forgot that Beneath was actually a damn fine sequel. It gave us more of the NYC ruins and lots of action. Tim Burton's POTA is actually a decent movie and gets way too much hate and the ending was much more in line with the book. But then Matt Reeves gave us an amazing prequel trilogy.

For me, the hoaky Chimp hippy protesters made the original a little too cornball, so my top from the original series is: 1.The Twighlight zone cut of "Planet of the Apes" 2. Beneath 3. "Planet of the Apes." I know there was a lot of dated stuff in there, but the doomsday cult element made it all the more intriguing. It was a very original idea to bring in the whole Forbidden Zone and everything found there.

All FIVE Ape movies are awesome. They follow a story arc that is easy to follow. It a made up imaginary story so it does require suspension of disbelief. ESCAPE has a great supporting cast. CONQUEST is a shot of adrenaline to the franchise. And BATTLE hadi the great PAUL WILLIAMS and that awesome Matte painting of the destroyed city. Loved that image. Too bad the TV series wasn't allowed a longer run. It made White People into Serfs and the Apes as their Roman Overlords. Interesting storyline there.

Beneath the planet of the apes suffered mainly because of budget. The first movie cost a ton of money to make with props sets and makeup. For this sequel the studio scaled the cost way back. And that’s mainly why it suffered. I still love it though it’s one of the better sequels of the series
@tonybush555
@tonybush555 3 ай бұрын
The studio needed something that would generate box office returns after a string of expensive products which lost money. They felt the need to keep costs down and that's what they did, but I still think Beneath did well with visuals and effects on a limited budget. And it was a hit - the best sequel in the original franchise. Thanks for commenting, Edmund. Appreciated. T.

Tora! Tora! Tora! cost just over $25 million to make and broke even with a worldwide box-office take of just over $37 million by the December of 1970. It was the 9th highest grossing film in the US in 1970. It was the sixth highest grossing film in Japan in 1971. But unfortunately none of that means it turned a profit for the studio or that they didn't lose money on it. Other factors apparently, whatever they are. And although I don't often agree with the late film critic Roger Ebert, on this occasion I found it to be as deadly dull an experience as he did. Thanks for your comment, though. Appreciated.

Actually Escape From The Planet Of The Apes is considered the 2nd best(and follow the original book plot theme more than the original film) I will however say Beneath is by far the most whacked out of the series, more apocalyptic and just more strange in trying to meld the combo of the style of the original and just out of control global warning of things to come....

Unlikely to confuse it with Dr Dolittle, although it was another kamikaze picture. Tora! Tora! One of the first movies I remember seeing in the theater. My family was visiting friends in Calgary and we, the kids, were sent to the movies. I was scarcely six but clearly remember several images from the film and even audience reactions. I too saw it prior to seeing the original and also clearly remember watching that classic on the CBS Sunday Night Movies. Remember those spinning golden reels and that legendary TV-movie theme? It was an era! Beneath is hands down the best sequel and the original five are far superior to those that came later. I mean given the choice between Charlton Heston and Mark Wahlberg? Please! Is there any comparison?

Wow Tony, when in the first few minutes of our narration when you said that you never got to watch the original on the big screen and that BTPOTA was the first...that's exactly what happened to me. I saw this movie as a double feature wit The Valley of Gwangi ( also with Franciscus ) Totally agree with what you said and the awful Escape from. I don't know if you knew about 20th Century Fox but by the late 70s they were losing money again. In 1976 they made The Omen ( with Gregory Peck ) in the UK because it was cheaper than doing it in the States, also using British actors made the production cost go down. Well, after the sucess of that film, they had enough money to make ....Star Wars. Thanks again Tony.

Mentioning the ABC in Newport reminds me that I once went there to see a film called Earthquake, a disaster movie with Chuck Heston in it. The film came complete with a gimmick called Sensurround which caused the chairs to vibrate quite violently when a quake struck onscreen. It was a bit like an oversized version of a Nintendo rumblepack. Only you could never tell exactly when it would kick in - the technology was a bit temperamental. Caused me to spill a Kia-Ora over my trousers after I'd rested it on the chair arm. Made it look like I'd pissed myself. That's entertainment for you. Happy days.

The last half hour/45 min is spectacular. Cool apocalyptic subway (especially with a rotary pay phone), in fact all the subterranean sites are tasty tear downs of a city. It’s 70s sci fi on steroids. The mutant makeup really holds up, as good as anything produced today. On the weak end, Ape City is more often a bore, the absence of McDowell is felt and the background apes wear some shitty masks. Religious bomb worship is ultra weird yet compelling (but a bit lengthy for my taste). That said, it’s a nice nihilistic film. The series truly ended with Beneath for me.

I really have a soft spot for all POTA movies, apart from awful 2001 version which has a terrific finale but the two hours that precede it are crap. Heston and his rug (taking separate pay cheques) reputedly ate all the budget and what was left paid for the movie. The seventies give some bonkers science fiction with nihilism at their core. Paul dehn was obsessed with nuclear war and death. His earlier (and far superior seven days to noon) 20th century fox was going through its corporate collapse and funding none existent, so after POTA 1 the audience continuously short changed with good (ish) ideas but TV budgets. After saying that I still enjoy the POTA MOVIES for all their illogical plotting,silliness but at least sincere acting and many in their respective specialties working miracles on no money. And as with all movies that end in Armageddon a happy ending

After Dr. Zaius granted them clemency in return for their silence about Apes' prehistory, Cornelius & Zira's only other hope for advancing their society's progress was through technology. They would have confided in Dr. Milo about the location of Taylor's ship. As Cornelius would later reveal in "Escape," Dr. Milo only half-understood its workings. Dr. Milo might have been able to engage the Auto-Pilot to carry out the launch functions. When Dr. Milo summoned them after the Ape Army departed the city for the Forbidden Zone, Zira & Cornelius already knew Taylor's ship was capable of flight. They took up Dr. Milo on his invitation for them to accompany him on a test flight. They may well have thought they would land in some other region of the country or in another country altogether. In either case, if the test flight succeeded, they apparently hoped to exploit it to try to advance their society's progress technologically and to leave the Dark Ages behind.
@tonybush555
@tonybush555 Ай бұрын
@@JamesWilliamKing Some interesting theories and conjecture. Just one issue: "the location of Taylor's ship" - wasn't Icarus at the bottom of a lake? It filled with water and sank like a brick as I recall. I'm guessing either the lake could have dried up or the apes had developed advanced marine salvage and flotation technology to bring it to the surface. Once they'd used their scuba-diving gear, or sonar to pinpoint it's exact position (it was a big lake which would have made it tricky to find). What's your theory on this? I think the lake drying up is the most likely. But as the events of Beneath take place directly after the events of Planet would that leave enough time for a lake that size to evaporate? Or, another possibility is that the writers of Escape decided to conveniently forget that Icarus was lost and useless. But, in the end, it's whatever floats your boat. Or spaceship. Thanks for commenting. T.
@JamesWilliamKing
@JamesWilliamKing Ай бұрын
Who said the Icarus was "lost and useless"? The Dead Lake didn't appear to be all that deep. All Dr. Milo and his crew would have had to have done was locate the craft, dive down and put a large air bladder into it, inflate the bladder from the surface, and raise the ship up just enough so that they could attach some lines to it and tow it to shore using a large team of horse to pull it ashore. The apes could have done that with their more primitive means.
@tonybush555
@tonybush555 Ай бұрын
@@JamesWilliamKing No one has to say it, it’s obvious from what we see on screen. The actual lake where it was filmed is approximately 185 miles long, 24 miles wide, covers 161,000 acres with an average depth of 132 feet. Most humans can free dive up to 40 feet (that’s without equipment) before things become intolerable - water pressure on lungs and organs, etc. May be different for apes and chimps, I don’t know how they fare as swimmers and divers traditionally. I suppose they could have forced their human slaves to do the heavy lifting. Now bearing in mind this is a film, so you can revise those factual numbers to fit your theory so that Icarus is not lost and, therefore, useless and is really easy to locate. But to all intents and purposes, from what we are shown on screen in the original film, the ship fills with water, sinks in a big deep lake and therefore is lost and useless. Until Escape, of course, which revises that scenario. Unfeasibly so, in my opinion. T.

Have no fears, I don't discriminate, I host a perpetual open season on all politicians - the more ludicrous and dumb they are, the better fodder for a cheap joke or wisecrack. There are some reviews that target Biden just to make a point or for the sake of a laugh. Shop around on here and you'll find them. Thank you again for taking the time to watch and comment and thank you for subscribing. It's people like you that help keep the channel going. Appreciated. T.

Sal mino wasn't in west side story! Do your homework before you spread misinformation. Do better. You may be thinking on rebel without a cause.

Nah, I was thinking of Krakatoa, East Of Java. Which was actually west of Java, but hey. Whole erroneous film title there. Still, as you're only the 822nd person to point the error out this week so far, I've taken steps to rectify it, so that pesky misinformation no longer presents a danger to anyone. The edit will take a while to kick in, so let's hope no harm is done in the meantime. How's that for doing better? Regards. T.
