I love that they did this for him. He's been dead for centuries and there's no-one left alive who remembers him, but they granted him the basic human dignity of a proper burial, just as they did with the Unknown Soldier.

These comments are horrible. Show some respect, guys, instead of making jokes. I think Benedict did a lovely reading and it was smart move by the people in charge of the burial service and direction to choose him for this. Imagine what a privilege and honour it must have been for him, considering this is a very distant family member he is doing it for.

My bones, scripted in light, upon cold soil, a human braille. My skull, scarred by a crown, emptied of history. Describe my soul as incense, votive, vanishing; your own the same. Grant me the carving of my name. These relics, bless. Imagine you re-tie a broken string and on it thread a cross, the symbol severed from me when I died. The end of time - an unknown, unfelt loss - unless the Resurrection of the Dead … or I once dreamed of this, your future breath in prayer for me, lost long, forever found; or sensed you from the backstage of my death, as kings glimpse shadows on a battleground. -- *Richard* by Carol Ann Duffy

Supposedly this was the last English king to die in battle. The post mortem mutilation of his genitals as well as his head prove his enemies feared and respected him. He also had a protruding spinal column that made him a bit of a hunchback. This King was a badass, no wonder the Tudors tried to slander him

kings had guts back then, if ruler's now had the guts to lead an army onto the front lines we would have less warring. Everyone would sleep better. Put your ass on the line just like any military person has to do. Don't ask other's what you're not willing to do yourself, the first rule in leadership. This King died nobly, he earned this homage.

King Richard the third was indeed a good king but the way he ascended the throne was not fair. He proclaimed his predecessor King Edward 4, his own brother as a bastard after his death and therefore rendered his son illegitimate for the throne so as to permanently become king when he was trusted with being Lord protector till his nephew came of age. Then, he was overthrown by Henry 6.
@RYBATUGA
@RYBATUGA 5 жыл бұрын
@@sheenraina6026 He was overthrown by Henry VII not VI. Richard's first plans were to have Edward V as king but the Woodvilles tried to annul Edward IV's wishes to have Richard as Lord Protector so he had to fight for his safety and against a King controlled by the Woodvilles who were responsible for the death of Warick one of the most important persons in Richard's childhood. He had to be the king for his sake and for England's sake.
@AmandaJ
@AmandaJ 4 жыл бұрын
@@sheenraina6026 Richard did not try to get Edward IV proclaimed illegitimate, that was their other brother, George Duke of Clarence. He later went back on it. Richard was told by a bishop that Edward IV had previously been married to another woman, and that he'd performed the ceremony in secret. Edward IV had a reputation as a womanizer so it wouldn't be too far-fetched. Maybe it was a lie Richard chose to believe, or maybe it was the truth. Either way it questioned the legitimacy of Edward V not Edward IV. Richard was loyal to his brother, Edward IV, until the day he (Edward) died.

@@sheenraina6026 There was a rumour that Edward lV was, indeed, illegitimate, the son of a French archer. Whether it's true or not it was current at the time., however Richard's claim to the throne, as laid out in the Act of Parliament, Titulus Regius, was that Edward's children were illegitimate, owing to Edward lV's marriage to Elizabeth Woodville being bigamous. Edward had been pre-contracted to marry Lady Eleanor Butler. A pre-contract is a previous and legally binding contract of marriage. This would nullify any second marriage, which would be bigamous. Richard was overthrown by Henry Tudor, who became Henry Vll.

As an upper level undergrad, I took a course at University of Michigan taught by a wonderful PhD in study of the Tetralogy, and Cumberbatch's work in this segment of Hollow Crown was impeccable. Watching the program was voluntary: we'd studied the text, but she'd featured some clips for our examination. I was enamoured and watched the entire series on DVD. I was so touched at the entire idea of his doing this reading at this solemn event (particularly given his connection to the king) that I sent this clip to my professor for anecdotal use as she wraps up that segment of future classes. I am now a graduate student involved in a research project with the same professor, who has a true passion and talent for British history and literature and is published in same. Anyone who really appreciates the incredible drama that unfolded in the story of this king has to tear up at seeing this clip. I know I did. Cumberbatch could be "posh" a thousand years from Sunday, but his talent and passion is undeniable. I wish I'd discovered his work sooner.

@chris dowell Benedict Cumberbatch's success has nothing to do with him being from a posh family. He is successful because he's got massive amount of talent and put a lot of hard work towards achieving his goals. His family are not really that posh either ... his parents were jobbing actors who sacrificed a lot to send him to a very good school (he supposedly won a drama scholarship to Harrow) hoping he would become a lawyer or something in a more stable profession.

You do realise that RIII's son, Edward, and his two natural children, John and Katherine, did not have any children of their own (that we know of) and therefore the strongest ties one can find to being a descendant of Richard's is through his sisters, nieces and cousins. Herefore you can not be a great grand+ daughter.

Nope. You know the saying ‘Possession is nine tenths of the law’? Well when it comes to the throne, possession is 100% of the law. If you’re sat on the throne and no other claimant has the power to remove you then the throne is yours, and everyone else can swivel for it. There are probably hordes of people out there who could probably try claiming that they’re the rightful heir to the throne because they’re distantly related to a king or queen who once sat on it, but they won’t get very far. Brutal but true.

We are a young country that perhaps fails to appreciate the value and importance of ceremony. This was neither overdone nor inappropriate, though our opinions hardly matter. British tradition is far older and more established than ours. Perhaps we would do well to recognize it with some measure of respect, whatever our socio-political differences. After all, we did a great deal of borrowing from it, to be sure.

It's not as unusual as you might think. Henry VI, Henry VIII, and all monarchs since George III, were buried in Windsor. George I was buried in Hanover. Most of the Monarchs between Elizabeth I and George II were buried in Westminster Abbey, but King John was buried in Gloucester, there was another in Canterbury, a couple of the early Plantagenets are in Anjou, William the Conqueror is in Normandy, etc.

@Tricia M Westminster Abbey is not a 'creation' of Henry VII. The Abbey was founded by King Edgar in 960, and rebuilt first by King Edward the Confessor in 1065 and again by Henry III in the thirteenth century. Seven English sovereigns were buried in the Abbey before Henry VII, in fact the Henry VII Chapel is one of the last additions to an Abbey Church which had already been standing for over 500 years.

That's nice. It would be even nicer if the remains of the princes in the tower could be found and put to rest.

They have. They're buried in Windsor castle in the chapel where Harry married that dreadful actress.

Cumberbatch strikes me as good lad but he sure is posh. I somewhat doubt it was hard for him to achieve success with the likely backing he got from his family and there connections.

Meme Guy History rarly looses the body of a Monarch. I can not say as to whether he was a bad King or a misunderstood or even malaligned King. Whatever the case I do believe that he deserved a better grave. Having ones remains literally driven over day in day out...well I do not think that the dead should be treated in such a way. Of course the current owners did not know, with 100% certainty back then. When they were made aware I believe he deserved better than to have been simply put back where he had been found. Just my opinion. Have a great day/night.

I'm an atheists t0 me all this is silly and useless but if you are going to do it get the right religion. Richard III would have never heard of Protestantism so this is really stupid you might as well do it in a mosque or a temple.

Skiffypig1 You do not know that with one hundred percent certainty. It is beieved by some that Shakespeare was the propaganda machine of the Tutor Court. I am American new to this part of history thus still undecided. I will say that even if he had been a terrible person/King, he deserved better. No one deserves for their remains to be ran over day and night till the end of days.

Richard III is no less evil than any other man in the game of thrones. If he is a villain who murders babes, he is also a warrior king to the end. When Catesby urges Richard to withdraw, he rebukes "Slave, I have set my life upon a cast/And I will stand the hazard of the die".
