10. if you live in a gated community the HOA owns the streets and sidewalks. the guards also patrol the streets for trespassers and mischievous kids. Because the HOA owns the street they can trespass anyone who is not an owner or guest before it escalates into a property crime or assault. if you live in the regular suburbs a person can stand on the sidewalk for hours a day watching your house and family and the homeowner can't do anything until the other person commits a crime on property or person.

Yes a new development in downtown purchased the sidewalks for this reason

@@courtneybentley i should have said "could own the streets and sidewalks" as it could be one the other or both. Street-fronted highrise buildings love to own the sidewalks to keep panhandlers and buskers from disturbing residents coming and going. this is a question worth asking before closing.

The other side is the gate is not the only way in. I've seen many stories in LV of people being home invaded, or just burgled by people who hopped a wall. Not long ago, a KZfaqr woke up to find people in his McDonald Highlands bedroom and a gunfight ensued. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iNCahrWTprutlnk.html And my favorite story is a kinda old one. Poker player Hoyt Corkins headed off for a vacation and his home in Spanish Trails became the home of his burglars. They literally moved in, which gave them all the time in the world to chisel the safe out of his wall, order credit cards in his name and wait for them to arrive by mail, and they even drove his cars in/out before stealing them. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iNqgY9Ny0rm2g5c.html So sure, a gate can help, and the guard at the gate can help. But you still need to pay attention as you are not entirely safe within the walls.
