Replacing the upper and lower ball joints on a 1992 Toyota 4Runner and reviewing ball joints for install ease and quality from Autozone, O'Reilly Auto Parts and NAPA Auto Parts. Spoiler alert O'reilly's and Autozone parts equally suck in different ways and are very frustrating to work with. Napa Ball Joints fit exactly as advertised and install without and headaches.
The vehicle we are working on today is my 1992 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4WD daily driver. With 256,000+ miles on the clock.
The ball joints I am replacing are the same parts for 4WD Toyotas:
4Runner 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994 & 1995
Pickup 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994 & 1995
T100 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996 1997 & 1998

Not only was this informative, it was also entertaining watching your struggles. Nice to see a more realistic how-to.

Thanks for the tutorial...good move with the pitman puller on the bottom..350k miles and the bottom was still tighter than the duralast. Since it wasn't damaged,i just put it back in. Thanks again

Honestly I am burnt out on the other ball joint replacement tutorials. Very informative of the same process principles but minimal details on the actual parts that you are working with. They are however still great videos with good content. This video however I feel like it fills in the voids that the other videos left out. Screw the how vids and keep up with the detailed experience with the actual parts and tools that you are working with. Me watching the segment felt like I was there mumbling expletives in the driveway when things don’t go right. Keep the vids coming. Great work!

I wish I would have watched this before I spent all day fighting with crap autozone balljoints. I had the exact same problem with them not wanting to fit. Ended up just cranking them on there and I don't even want to think about it.

I watched half of this video the other day because I'm ready to do mine on my 93 4 runner and went to the stealership for the driver upper and lower ball joint was $288. But it came from another state away the next day they called my at 10 am I was in shock because they said probably 2 day. The funny part was I just got done grinding fiberglass and I was all stinky and the parts gal was asking her co worker if he could smell That smell and I started laughing and said it was me and told them what I have been doing. Lol

I just started this job. One set of instructions said I needed to remove the calipers, I said B.S.! Another wanted me to take the hub apart! I'm glad I watched this one. Unfortunately, I bought Autocrap parts a year ago. I'm going to remove the paint from the shoulders and sand the i.d. of the knuckle. Then I will use a bigger hamer !@#$%^&

For the studs, you could have thrown a stack of washers on them and then the nut to torque the studs on (similar to how you would do it on the axle).

I also heard good things about NAPA ball joints, mostly because of the pricing lol. Carlis and dynatrac are way too exspensive, but from what i have been hearing they are really good. Moog used to be a preferred choice, but now they are made in china and fail easily.

How long would you say they last. My 2001 Tacoma has 400,000 miles and I'm barely about to rebuild the suspension with poly bushes, poly dust boots and genuine Toyota joints all around. I've been cupping my tires since about 2008. I think there should be a better design of joints by now. I like the shovel check. Great job brother!

The high end Napa parts are fine I think. I never did and rock crawling or anything so not sure about extreme use. All my Napa joints are just as good as when I installed them. Be careful not to buy cheap ones if you do ever go shopping at Napa. They also sale a low quality item, the same crap you can get from all the other auto part stores. They told me they have two qualities of each part available. Direct OEM or better quality and a crap part comparable to the top quality of a auto one or oreillys.

I dont abuse my truck either. No rockcrawling or mudding. Thanks for sharing about your Napa parts. I bought some genuine BMW parts through them and I was surprised when they handed them to me. I will start communicating more with my parts guy at Napa now. Thanks so much again for sharing, have a good day and keep up the great work!!!

Hello, about the genuine parts for Hilux (4runner) 2004 : original 4 ball joints contain a spring inside and after 1000km it snaps and rattles and costs 250 euros. Ashika after market ball joints don't have the spring, lasts 20 000km, costs 50 euros...
