my great-uncle passed away on December 5. He taught me to love this music. so every time I listen to big bands, the memory of my beloved great-uncle is present. well, my great-uncle will always be there.

In the summer of 1985 my grandparents introduced me to Benny Goodman Glen Miller and Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald. And I still listen to their music. I got teases in school for liking them. While other girls were listening to new kids on the block... I loved the 30s and 40s lol

That concert, especially Sing,Sing,Sing had to be one of the greatest concerts, ever. Too bad there are not time machines, born more than a dozen years too late.

My father was in US Military Intelligence in Berlin in the early 60s. One day he stopped at his local Gasthaus for a drink and a known Czech agent sat down at the bar next to him. The Czech wanted to talk and he started talking about music. The guy was able to list every musician who took part in that 1938 Carnegie Hall Concert!

To me the greatest Benny Goodman band ever assembled at the very peak . 1936-1937 and this Jan 16 1938 historic concert. Its a shame there was only one single overhead mike to record this swinging masterpiece.

The sound is not bad for an overhead mic. But at least the organisers had the foresight to record this important concert for us to enjoy many years later. What I would give to go back in time and watch these kings of swing for real!

Accroding to jazz historian and archivist Phil Schaap (who worked on the remastered 1998 CD release), "at least three additional mikes were used" as a backup, because that overhead mike malfunctioned during the concert.

He would have died a man who was so happy to have witnessed this incredible piece of musical history. --- I am happy that I bought the records back in the late 1950s and have played them to death over the ensuing years. But it's nothing like what it must have been to actually be there. WOW

My grandpa got me into swing. He would blast it top down in a sports car. Loud - people would gawk, we would smile being the coolest cats in the world

And to think my parents saw Benny Goodman, Glen Miller, Tommy Dorsey in concert in NYC during Big Band's heyday. I am so envious. It's certainly much better than the junk peddled as music today.

@@monicabella7894 Exactly! There is no need to be so narrow-minded or so purist. You have to enjoy the music. There are very good ones and there were also very good ones. Not ALL of the music back then was wonderful either, there was a lot of it that was quite forgettable. BUT THIS... IS REALLY GOOD!

My mom said that when you went to hear Benny Goodman and dance all night, just when you were ready to leave, he would strike up a tune. At least 3 times he would do this and then say good-night Betty (Grable). She said you always wanted to get back up on your feet and dance again every time.

Hey! Everyone! Just go out and buy the complete recording, the CD version also have some "missed notes" that the records never had. Everything that band did that night works better today than ANY of the myriad attempts since then to match it. Now, THAT was Jazz at its height!!!!

Krupa saved this concert by taking over and loudly rolling his drums when things weren't going well,I had the repress of this concert from the 60s that the liner notes explained the whole dynamic and exactly when they let loose after Krupa jacked them up. Side 1 obviously, but you could hear how tame they were playing before he loosened them up with a clap to the head.

FYI, this is only disc 2 (sides 3 and 4). The full concert tracks can be found here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o86Gd9hlktO6f2g.html Edit: As Jay Lee noted, the link is not the true performance, but the compilation does represent the songs played (more or less).
