Latin Jazz is the real. Benny does a great job. Today's drummer is becoming more and more open in styles,, not just Rock. Gavin H. is an other one who is taking rock or metal drumming, and mixing it with world music. Mike Portnoy, Neal P. (rush) who is now studying Jazz with Peter Erskine. Its ok dude, slowly but surely we evolve. Keep drumming Bro's.

I agree. When my playing was self taught I only listened to punk and rock but once I started having a teacher I was introduced to players like Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Steve Gadd, Philly Joe Jones. I needed my mind opening up.

My drum teacher used to say "We should explore all the sound in this world so that we can live not in or out of our comfort zone.. but to live on the border of it, and that is when you will truly appreciate music and life"

I dunno if it's just nonsense what I'm going to say here, but I think this guy (and a couple of other emergent drummers) will change lots of things in the scenario of drum playing, in a way that things are going to progress to a "next" level of drumming.

It's like no matter how many times I've watched this vid, it always makes more sense than the last time I saw it. ah and by the way,... Who on earth could dislike this?? Benny is a true "Master", who could not learn from this amazing person? Probably those plastic drummers that search the web looking for crazyness and waste of energy and life.

up till now, it seemed to me like most players who used Meinl Byzance and rocked the double floor toms were hardcore freaks (like Aaron Gillespie) and they always inspired me. It blows my mind to see a sensitive, precise, and articulate drummer rocking the same set up and cymbals

Seriously, this is one of the most difficult exercises I ever attempted. Even the one-bar version. This awareness requires SUCH an amount of concentration, that I am just not able to do it. One of these days I have to start working on this on a daily basis. I'm sure, it will improve me as a player a lot.

All drummers should embrace all types of music, this will expand their musical vocabulary.Beginners should love the music they are into now and then move on into unfamiliar realms at a later stage but not too late. This is where a good teacher comes into play.I'm in my forties and have played since I was nine but I have a drum teacher who I call "Coach". You never stop learning....

On this video he used a Sonor SQ2 kit made out of beech, in thin/vintage shells. The sizes are 18x22, 8x10, 14x14, 16x16, 13x6 snare and a 12" side snare (not sure about the deph). Cymbals from left to right are Meinl 14 Byzance Extra Dry hats, 18 Byzance Extra Dry thin crash, 20 prototype ride, 14/12 Generation X Trash hats, 22 Byzance Jazz ride with Pro-Mark Sizzler (not 100% sure about this last cymbal tho).

Drummers are drummers, and we all develop at our own pace. There are a lot of drummers (including myself) that started off with rock and eventually went to jazz. Once can use skills from each style and relate it to the other, as long as it's done musically. The reason why people think Rock players and Jazz players are different is because the majority of drummers focus on only one style, and no nothing about the others.

I only got this like an hour after experimenting when I noticed the different snare note values between the triplet and the paradiddle lol. Start with triplet 6-stroke-roll, then paradiddle. Tab is like this: 1TL +TL 2e+ah 3e+ah 4(e)+ Triplet 6-stroke-roll: RllrrL R. First R is accent on floor tom, the L on Snare, 2nd R on high tom. The paradiddle he used was the RLLR LRRL R, accented it like this: RllR lrrL R. First 2 Rs on high tom, the L on snare, 3rd R also on snare (which is on beat 4).

I gotta agree with Greb on this one. You need to have constent awareness of what's happen. Especially when it comes to concert and jazz music. But on the other hand, you just sometimes lose yourself, and that doesn't hurt either.
