BENNY GREB - Solo Outtake

This is a short improvised solo I did back when we shot some videos for Meinl cymbals prior to the release of their Foundry Reserve Line.
In the end it wasn't released during the promotion so I thought i might as well just share it here for you. So I hope you enjoy and I wish you a great day.

Fantastic as usual! A different drum sound than I’m used to hearing and yet still fantastic! The cymbals sound so clean and perfectly balanced with your dynamics and the open kick sounds great for the long slower notes yet still sounds clear on the faster notes. How is that? Must be Benny’s touch and an open 20” kick rather than a 24” or bigger. Although I’m sure you’d make them all sound excellent! Great stuff!

Mr. Greb. Where the heck do I even begin with this... I never thought I'd ever be silly enough to be "starstruck" upon meeting anyone. After all, we are all human beings, right? But, having said that, when I met you at the Meinl Drum Festival here in Sweden back in 2013 I could hardly manage to get a word out of my mouth! I remember telling you how much I loved all your signature gear, from cymbals to snare drum and so on; and how incredibly inspiring your playing as well as your teaching was to me! I'll never get tired of hearing & watching you play, man. You still inspire and amaze me more than anybody after almost 10 years of following your journey! A pair of sticks in your hands is just something else... It is almost like watching a trained Jedi-Knight swing a lightsaber, like watching Michael Jordan take off into the air with the basketball, or like watching Picasso paint. It's like you almost have to pinch yourself at times. Your love for this instrument and your evergrowing curiousity is contagious in the best of ways. It's magic. Not only are you definitely one of the very best drummers we have today, with the most unique and inspiring approach to drumming and education; but we drummers sure are lucky to have you, sir! It certainly made that ride cymbal on the right sound beautiful! Personally, I like seeing videos like this, the ones that didn't make the cut. They can be an important lesson about how the creative process sometimes has to controlled/shaped. Thanks Benny!

My question is how many thousands of hours of practice were spent to get this good and how the hell do you do it while holding down a job before you get income from playing? I have been failing at finding any sort of balance while being able to keep a roof over my head.
