I was around 13 when this song came out. This was the theme song for when I grew up and found a boyfriend and fell in love. We didn’t have KZfaq back then to analyze the lyrics and I sat here at 35 reading the lyrics on the internet, like “16 years old, WTF?”

So I did some research on this song and it's not as creepy as we all believe.... It was about a 16 year old and her family that was abandoned by their father... So he helped the family out... No sexual content, and he wasn't in love with her... They had a platonic relationship

@@cita134 It's a bit naive to think that the song's lyrics and the video are about something other than a man's sexual interest in a 16 year old girl it happens after all. I'm not bothered by it, it's just a song lyric. I understand why the story was spun by Benny for the Prof of Rock episode, times have changed. I'm just not sure why anyone would choose not to believe their own eyes & ears? C'mon man.

@BmaGrl 11 ай бұрын
@@jeffbaker4400 NOPE. He told "The Professor of Rock" that he wrote it about a girl that lived in an apartment downstairs from his who was living with her single mother & brothers & sisters. He had moved to the apartment in 1979 with his writing partner to write songs for his upcoming 19080 album, Never Run Never Hide, & he was 33 at the time. He always felt kind of sorry for the kids, especially the 16 year old girl because she had to spend so much time taking care of her siblings while her mother worked, so he tried to help out when he could. One morning she popped up to his place while they were working on this song before leaving for school to ask about his helping her with the kids, that afternoon, & when she left, his writing partner made some lude comment about her, to which he replied that he should leave her alone because she was just 16 years old. And, that was the lyric he had been struggling with when trying to write that song. After that, everything else just fell into place rather quickly. So, there was a SEVENTEEN YEAR gap between him & the neighbor's daughter, but there wasn't ever anything between them, at least not that he admitted to.

16 years old isn't really the problem. The problem is the age difference combined with that. That aside the maturity of the male and female matters too. It's worst if the male and female are immature, even if the male is just 19 or 20. And by immature I mean more a propensity for sex or intoxicants.

As Benny once explained.... this is based on true story of a girl named Heidi that lived in Spanish Harlem. She came from a bad family situation where he ended up taking care of her and I believe some of the other children. She was living with him while they were making their first album. She walked in the room dressed for school when Benny and Robert were co-writing. Robert was smitten by her and made a comment to Benny. Benny said “hey she’s just sixteen leave her alone” as Robert thought she was much older. And Benny instantly had a played that chord on the guitar. From Benny point of view it was more parentslistic and then more romanticlistic from Robert point of view. Either way it became a hit and has people talking 40 years later.

eeeek! I love this song! I remember being 16 back in the 80's, being rebellious, promiscuous, and fearless. I had a crush on a man in his mid 20's when i was almost 16. Back then, I thought it was so amazing that the person I was crushing on was interested in me. Now, though, after having raised a daughter, I definitely understand why my parents flipped out when 15 yr old me got caught sneaking out of my bedroom window in the middle of the night and into the hands of my 24 year old "lover"/pervert.

I was too young to remember when it charted in 1980, but I do remember when it charted in 1989. The vocals on this song are awesome. This was one of my favorite songs. I never saw the video until a few years ago. It's funny how times have changed. There was no controversy when this video came out. It received extensive radioplay and nobody was offended by the initial line. I never heard a comment about it. Seeing the comments about the video today, it makes me wonder if we have become an oversexualized society. I have to admit, though, I get a good laugh reading some of the comments.

Weird, isn't it? My oldest son's girlfriend heard the song Seventeen by Winger and was appalled, and I was thinking back remembering that when I was a kid and teenager, we had quite a few of these songs, and nobody cared then for some reason!! Our music is more explicit and nasty now, but they sure the hell know better than to sing about teenage girls! I remember skating at the skating rink, to Kiss's Christine Sixteen too. And Rick James had a song about a 17 year old girl too. Joan Jett, I love Rock and Roll, has her singing about a 17 year old boy? It's all so weird now!! And the guy in this video looks kind of old and creepy, looking in the window and such? WTF?
@shay5839
@shay5839 6 жыл бұрын
Oh.... I also recall when I was in high school, I had a friend that was 16, engaged to a 32 year old man, and though most of us felt he was a little old for our liking, nobody really cared? Weird stuff! But me and my boyfriend got married right out of high school at 18 years old, and I was a couple of months pregnant when we got married, but it wasn't a "shot gun," wedding, cause we had already planned to get married and I had my ring for over a year before we got married. And I was a wife and a mother totally capable of handling it all on my own. I believe a couple of decades ago, we matured way earlier because our parents didn't baby us and spoil us rotten. These days, even though an 18 year old is old enough to get married without permission, and old enough to fight and die for our country, many see them as mere children at 18 now, and not anywhere near being an adult. I remember a divorced woman that lived a few houses down from me when I was 13, would go out on weekend nights with her single mother girlfriends, and I would babysit about 5 small children, all by myself. All under 4!!!! I managed to get those kids fed, bathed, and in bed like a pro! I cannot imagine allowing a 13 year old babysit just 1 child, even if that child was 5 or over? Times have changed so much! When I was 18, not only could I totally run my house, I was able to handle the bills, checkbook and such, and budget our money. I don't support grown men, like in this video, dating teenage girls, and would have been horrified if that creature came knocking on my door to see my daughter when she was a teenager, but in other ways, we are failing our kids by not teaching them to be adults, by cooking, cleaning, managing money, etc. My 2 oldest were able to take care of themselves when they left for college, but my daughter struggles a bit still with managing her money. Not to the point of going bankrupt, just sometimes needing me to front her some money until her pay day, so it isn't causing issues really. I am guilty of handling everything almost, for my youngest 13 year old son, and need to nip my babying him in the bud. As I have gotten older, I like everything calm and don't feel like going through battles, causing me to just clean his room and bathroom instead of staying on top of him and making him do it. I believe starting today, I am going to start turning this situation around, so I don't have a 30 something year old Bernie supporting son, living in my basement!

He was interviewed and said this. They interviewed her on the radio she said it all true he helped her survive. . And the attention she got she was married by some millionaire producer. And she thanked him for writing the song about her. The video though was produced by others not sure if it was wisest thing.
