Your tank was perfect and ready for new fish, but the new fish died in the first 48 hours. Why? I just received a large shipment of fish. Did they make it past that crucial 48 hour mark? Let's get into it in today's video, and watch for a bonus tip at the end!
Do you tips and ideas on this topic? Share in the comment section. We all learn from each other at this channel. Remember to always be learning and don't ever forget that you reading this right now - YOU ROCK!

Lighting of the 300 and 210 gallon African Cichlid tanks is provided by JC&P and AQQA. For JC&P LED lights and the other aquarium products they offer use this link:

For 10% off AQQA use code: AQQA2022
Remember that fish keeping is truly a "fluid situation" and what works for one set-up might not work for another. Do plenty of research gathering information from several reliable sources before making any changes in your aquarium.

Totally agree with all your useful points. I'd just like to add that the fish being stressed will be breathing harder and so that creates a tougher situation again with the creation of ammonia (which is released primarily through the gills). This is why I always do a water change soon after adding fish and it is certainly a good idea to add fish slowly, not so many at once.

I luckily haven't had a new fish die in along time, once I started buying at higher end stores with higher quality goldfish, 0 issues since switching to 1 shop. Looking to a big 6 inch white Oranda soon.

Yup, I've done all this and still no luck. I've probably lost 90% of shipped fish. Most people who talk about this also are only talking about bigger fish. I assume smaller fish are more fragile

Great info! Especially since I just added some fish today. The oxygen point really hit the nail on the head, as that was something I was concerned with in my main tank being the only tank to get new additions that weren't replacements.
@BenOchart
@BenOchart Жыл бұрын
If you see them hanging at the top and gasping it’s probably an O2 issue. If gasping at the bottom check for ammonia.

Ben I’m transferring over to the holy grail extreme aquatics food, I’m aware of its history , excluding the krill flakes I’m assuming any of the their pellets will ok with mbunas regarding protein? I’m getting their splurina flakes for them but ok to feed them the nice version pellets along with the splurina as the staple food daily? Just don’t wanna get bloat with too much protein , what’s ur recommendation to feed mbunas in the extreme aquatics food line, let me know thanks sir

Not having any Mbuna since having started with Xtreme, it’s something I’m just not entirely sure of. I can see the greens in the flakes, but need to study the ingredient list to be sure.

I was worried when I got 14 fish all differ sizes and had to put them into my 135 gallon. I was thinking about all what you said except for oxygen it’s a reef ready with sump but test water daily for 2 weeks all went well I was lucky especially with aggression

I set up my tank last night, added dechlor and added 5 neon tetras. They all died within 6 hours! They were the only fish in the brand new tank. Ive set many tanks up the same day and never had this issue. What happened? Yes floated the bag and i didnt add the water from the pet store in the new tank. Only thing i can possibly think of is ammonia. The only thing i saw before they started dying was gasping at the surface so i added an air stone because i thought the filter wasnt giving enough oxygen. There was zero flashing. I keep koi, i always have checked my tap water. Its always had chlorine but never ammonia. So when i filled the tank i didnt even bother to use my test kit for ammonia. When they started dying, i immediately checked it. It was at 1ppm. I knew id be having to use my prime or safe until the good BB grew but wasnt ready for ammonia already in there. Could the ammonia for those few hours have killed them that fast? (Honestly never dealt with ammonia issues) Im glad i checked my tap water tho because now i know theres ammonia in it also, i would have been gutted if i killed my beautiful koi. Any advice or info, insight would be appreciated. Makes me feel like a complete idiot.. i know fish, had them for years. Im so puzzled

@@BenOchart thanks for the reply. But that stinks, I would really like to get some of those. Keep up the great work on the videos. I found some silk plants on Amazon that look pretty good, but they're not as nice as those. I may purchase a few to see how they are.

I always see some fish die even with clean water that I tested for ph, nitrate, ammonia. I once set up a 60 gallon tank with a big school of 100 neon tetras and most days 5 of them would die. After a few months only one of the neons was left and he must have been the alpha because he lived another 3-4 years with no other neons in the tank

I just think the #1 reason is theres sumthin goin on w that fish that u & the store is unaware of I buy 4 max at one time Theres been times i bought 4 fish 3 of them lived but 1 died which is why i believe they die from pre existing conditions unfort

You are starting to sound like a fish biologist. LOL. The oxygen issue in my opinion is overblown. Large differences in water chemistry between supplier and your aquarium is a potential major issue. I had challenges adapting fish from the northwest suppliers who typically have soft and acidic water. My water like yours is hard and alkaline. I only buy on-line and always make sure the supplier's water is similar to mine- have not lost a new fish in years
@BenOchart
@BenOchart Жыл бұрын
Good advice. I even ask what the supplier feeding so I can offer something similar initially.

For established tanks, these deaths are due to poor living conditions prior to coming to your tank. For beginners, it is usually because of ammonia spikes and the tank not having enough beneficial bacteria. Please don't add a lot of fish at once...if you have to, immediately dose the tank with Prime/Safe and continue that for several days even if you have an established tank.
