Hey Ben! Depends on the run for me... If I'm on an easy run, I love zoning out to a podcast like the Inside Running Podcast. I find music can all too easily turn my easy runs into a tempo 😂 For a session, I like to hear my breathing and be aware of my surroundings so go without. But a good mix of music, podcasts and nothing helps keep running interesting for me 👌

It certainly helps with the mental side.. given I've done it before, so I can do it again.. but really I've only been running seriously for about 3 years.. so don't have years and years of training in my legs, that most people could call upon to get back in shape quick. Agree with your point though of course! :-)

Hi Ben. I've recently discovered your channel, having fallen back in love with running in my late forties. I was a club runner in my teens and very early twenties with a 10k PB of 33.30. Sadly, it's taken me years to get back into it. Love the channel and I'm finding your advice really helpful and beneficial. I have to agree with the running on feel. I leave my watch at home on my long steady runs and don't become obsessed with time and heart rate. I actually enjoy the training runs better without a watch on my wrist. Keep up the good work.

Seb Coe said it best 'generally speaking if your hearing music in your ears then your not giving the workout your full effort'. Maybe an occasional long run is ok with music but in my experience its important to be used to running without music to progress in your running. Those who are reliant on their music or phone never really seem to progress that well or that fast.

Hi, Ben, I came across your channel today, having never seen it before. I have been running now for 37 years! Yes, I am that old. I have run marathons, half, 10k 5k, I am now also a triathlete. I have done all the distances there also including Ironman. I am now almost 59 and running is as much a part of my DNA as everything about me. I run in On shoes these days after years of running in about every brand there has ever been. My problem is as I get older, I am getting slower, much slower. Found the video useful. I do want to try and run quicker again. But not sure how possible that is at my old age. Great video.

I couldn't agree more with regards to easy running and forgetting the data on those days Ben. Ive learnt not to record them and just set the stopwatch and go completely on feel. So important to avoid that grey area. Easy running transformed the way I approach running and I made massive gains in my running. Make the easy days easy and the hard days hard. Great content Ben.

Great video, Ben, thanks for sharing these great points. I have started the New Year focusing on consistency and "stripping" down my reliability on data while I run. I have been running more by feel and don't look at my watch at all except to start it and stop it :) Feels so much more freeing and I'm enjoying my running more. I listen to music when I train but don't normally at races, although I now have some Aftershokz so might at my next race when that happens :) Cheers from Canada, Scott

This is the first time I comment on your video, but going from 38mn to 32mn is a very good attention catching title. I will try to do that this year. I am going to follow your tips, however, I don't have all this technology (smartwatch, heart rate monitor, strava). 25 years ago, I was a sub 28mn for a 10k. But I am now buying more therapeutic equipment that definitely help, I also studied sport therapy to avoid or prevent injuries. I wish luck to myself for this year, and I am wishing you good luck and success.

Hey Jordan! I'll try and drop a more detailed chat in an upcoming vlog about the Normatec. If you have any questions feel free to ask though. If you have the money then it's a great system.. but the Air Relax is better value for money.. minimal upgrades really between the two. But build quality is a log better on the Normatec. With the Strava I just need to keep it so I follow the people I coach.. so I don't miss their training. But if you do something cool and wanted me to take a look etc, then always tag me in your comments section and I'll get a notification! All the very best with your running! Ben

Great Video Ben, Some really good points you make here. Mindset is massive for me and something I read about a lot. Form is something that I plan to work on a lot this year as I am a bit of a heel striker or at least at slower speeds I am, I think I get more onto my midfoot if I pick up the pace a bit. Matt the welsh runner has a lovely running form and looks really graceful when he runs quick. Music is a really big factor for me as well. I usually have a podcast on for longer runs but when im getting tired I put on some tunes and the difference it can make is amazing. I too use Aftershokz headphones because I feel safer! Fantastic video. I love the detail on what sessions you did in the lead up. It’s a simple plan but that detail is important. I’m interested in how you structure your long run. You said something about having harder blocks in there. How do you structure your long run? Are you running to distance or time? What’s the balance of easy/hard? Etc. maybe there’s another video in that...
@BenParkes
@BenParkes 3 жыл бұрын
Yes.. will do another video on that at some point. A few simple examples could be 5k easy, 5k current marathon pace x2 or x3 for a 20k or 30k run. Or 8k easy, 2k current half marathon pace x2. You can change to time if it suits you better. All the plans we offer have long runs structured in a similar way. Lots of examples.. hope that shows you it in more detail!

Personally, i was listening to music while running, but when i found out that it affect my psychology while running then I quit. Yes it gives me an extra energy... but only when the song that i'm listening for at that moment was good for me, and its BPM was optimal for me. But when it wasn't the case, i feel that i'm loosing my focus, my power.. this leads me to repeat the song more and more or listening to another music at the same BMP. to regain my focus. In my mind music is just a distraction for a runner, because it prevents him from listening to his mind to adjust his endurance or rhythm. the runner have to feel what's around him and listening to the sound of nature, and this helps him detox his mind too: This is a 90%(psychology) of the running success of every elite runner.

You can also use a tennis ball or a message gun as tools for recovery/varm up. Btw I some times run with music but most of my runnings I do without music. Then i do Ironman or my ultrarunning its without music so I guess I just use to run without and just enjoy my runnings

Good info there, Ben. Solid stuff. It’s interesting you say about being able to run on feel being a skill. I’m putting together a bit of fun in the form of 5 challenges/sessions to see which KZfaqr (and indeed all runners) is the best at running on feel. I shall definitely lay the gauntlet down to you and see what you’ve got!! I just tried the first one (a blind tempo session trying to run at a set HR but based on feel alone). Good fun 😊👍🏻 keep doing what you’re doing, buddy.

Hì Ben I do most of my running inside with music pumping away, but the way things are at the moment the gyms are closed so doing my running outside. Where I live is all roads and hills so find listening to music a bit risky .

Wicked bit of info to take in.. I've gone from 59:50 ish back in May to 49:31 few days ago. But would love to hit low end 40s or under .. maybe a bit more training and weight loss... 5stone down 2 more and I'll be ready I think

I used to listen to music, but since I found out that you might not be allowed to listen to music for some races, I don't listen anymore. I think i'm more consistent without as my speed would change depending on the song I was listening to. Really enjoying your plan so far :) one question though, in general why is it important to run slow so much to run fast?

Hi Ben, I have a question if you don't mind? I also train in Pegasus Turbo 2's and my marathon time is around 3:20. I see you race in the next percent flyknits I think and my question is, could you offer a guess as to how much quicker they would be for someone like me than the Pegasus Turbo 2's in a marathon, based on my current marathon time? Trying to work out if it's worth spending the money! Many thanks, love the videos.

Great Video Ben. I have just started your 10k advanced plan and trying to break 40 for the first time. This is my 3rd plan and all have been great!! Your tips and tricks are great and visualisation is something that I am struggling with. Do you use a massage gun in your recovery and if so can you recommend a good make as there are so many out there.

I can confirm the hats will give you a 10k PB, I had been working on breaking the 40min 10k for a good couple of years. Then I bought a hat, did a 10k TT and got 39:48* :D (*My Coach might have also played a part in this)

@Ben Parkes, would love to get your opinion on how much of a difference recovery boots make? Currently looking into the Normatec recovery boots but given the cost, I am trying to determine if the benefit outweigh’s the investment? I am not expecting them to be better than a massage but would using them reduce the need for a monthly massage? Would love to hear your thoughts on it?

For recoveries from running a recovery mix with a 4:1 ratio of carbs:protein is generally recommended. Our friends in the gym rely more on protein. Loads of recovery mixes on the market.
